Identity Impacts Of Crafting In Multiple Life Domains Among Employees With Chronic Mental And Physical Illnesses: A Mixed-Method Study, Kenzie Dye
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation examined the impact of job, home, and leisure crafting on perceptions of five markers of positive work identity among employees with chronic mental and physical illnesses. It was hypothesized that all forms of crafting would be positively related to work identity perceptions when examined independently, and that job crafting would be the strongest predictor when the crafting categories were examined together. It was also predicted that home and leisure crafting would amplify the effects of job crafting on positive work identity. Based on qualitative data collected from focus groups comprised of individuals with a variety of chronic mental …

Research from literature relevant to recommendation systems, along with analyses of successful attractions and digital experiences, informed the creative solutions developed for The Nexus. In this immersive walkthrough attraction, guests pass through a magical portal into a multiverse that adapts to their preferences and actions. This research shows how …
Firefighter Syndrome: Improving The Identification And Classification Of Firefighters In Need, Michael A. Schlenk
Firefighter Syndrome: Improving The Identification And Classification Of Firefighters In Need, Michael A. Schlenk
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Firefighters (FFs) exhibit a multitude of behavioral and physical health concerns as well as fluctuating social support due to their occupation. Despite the fire service enacting preventative approaches to health and wellness, FFs still report increased prevalences of health concerns at the end of their career. Firefighter syndrome was created to identify FFs in need of medical care (e.g., behavioral and physical health services, Frueh et al., 2022b). The purpose of this study is to validate the construct of FF Syndrome by using statistical classification techniques to investigate whether there is a latent group of firefighters that have the symptoms …
The Marginalization Of The Malgre Nous In French Society From Its Roots To The 1960s, Marie Oury
The Marginalization Of The Malgre Nous In French Society From Its Roots To The 1960s, Marie Oury
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis examines how young Alsatians found themselves on the margins of postwar France. The illegal annexation of their region by Germany in 1940 led them into a bitter paradox: within months, they had to support their enemy's war effort. The National Socialist (Nazi) regime's coercion reached its height between 1942 and 1945, when 130,000 young men and women from Alsace and Moselle were conscripted into the German army against their will. After the war, this generation bore the weight of that history, struggling to reintegrate into France, a nation that sought to avoid grappling with the complex experiences of …
Digitally-Mediated Nature-Connectedness?: Listeners’ Emotional Responses To And Perception Of Digitized Nature Sounds, Marissa Salas
Digitally-Mediated Nature-Connectedness?: Listeners’ Emotional Responses To And Perception Of Digitized Nature Sounds, Marissa Salas
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
• Faced with the potential closure or privatization of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS), it is important to reflect on the conservation efforts using soundscapes. This dissertation explores the gap between experts and lay listeners in listening to soundscapes through the digitally-mediated spaces (e.g. YouTube). In a pilot project conducted in 2024 that used facial emotional recognition software and a talk-aloud protocol, data on emotions was collected. Using NPS video recordings on its webpages, social media accounts and via other digital channels (YouTube, etc.) created by NPS experts, this project employed an innovative, interdisciplinary, mixed-methods experimental design to investigate …
Influencing Sustainability: The Impact Of Digital Influencers On Sustainable Tourism Behaviors, Karen C. N. Tavares
Influencing Sustainability: The Impact Of Digital Influencers On Sustainable Tourism Behaviors, Karen C. N. Tavares
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation investigates how digital influencers shape sustainable tourism communication and behavioral intentions through a multi-method research approach. As influencer marketing increasingly drives destination visibility and traveler decision-making, understanding its role in advancing sustainability is essential for aligning economic growth with environmental and social responsibility. To address this gap, two complementary studies were conducted.
Study 1 applied social media content analysis to examine sustainable tourism discourse, identifying trends in topics, message framing and content. The analysis revealed a largely positive and gain-framed conversation, emphasizing lifestyle identity, collective values, and all three pillars of sustainability. Influencer analysis showed that while institutional …
Assessment Of The Safety Culture In Petrochemical Industries In Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ahmed Mohammed Alqarfi
Assessment Of The Safety Culture In Petrochemical Industries In Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ahmed Mohammed Alqarfi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Given the inherently hazardous nature of petrochemical operations, an effective safety culture is critical. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 29 peer-reviewed articles published in open access between 2014 and 2024 were selected to evaluate the status of safety culture dimensions employed in the petrochemical sector. This cross-sectional study assessed safety culture in the Saudi Arabian petrochemical industry and examined the relationships among safety culture dimensions, safety motivation (SM), and safety performance. Safety performance was operationalized as personal error behavior (PEB) and attitudes toward violations (ATV), with SM modeled as a mediating factor. After obtaining IRB approval, a total of 482 employees …
Reconciling Theory And Praxis. Defending Subjective Agency Against Althusser's Structuralism - Daniel Guerrero, Daniel Guerrero
Reconciling Theory And Praxis. Defending Subjective Agency Against Althusser's Structuralism - Daniel Guerrero, Daniel Guerrero
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Louis Althusser labels Marx’s early works as humanist, pseudo-materialist, and self-contained within the ideology of German idealism. Therefore, all attempts to develop a Marxist theory based on these works are futile and ideological. Instead, Althusser proposes a ‘scientific’ reading of Marx developing a structuralist theory based on dialectical materialism. I argue that his interpretations deny individual agency and reduce social relations to mechanistic processes, which directly conflicts with fundamental Marxist ideas like alienation, production, and species-being. By discussing authors within the Marxist Humanist tradition, I argue that a theoretical framework based on Marx’s early works is not only possible, but …
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cultural Stigma, And Identity Distress Among College Students, Jessica T. Frank
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cultural Stigma, And Identity Distress Among College Students, Jessica T. Frank
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cultural stigma, and identity in a sample of college-age students. Previous studies have primarily focused on children, yet few have examined ADHD as it persists into adulthood. Likewise, studies examining cultural stigma and identity were limited and primarily examined stigma toward mental health as a general concept rather than ADHD-specific attitudes. To address these disparities, a sample of undergraduate college students enrolled in psychology courses at a large metropolitan university (N = 339) were recruited and took an anonymous online survey in exchange for course …
Adverse Childhood Experiences And Working Memory, Lake Miller
Adverse Childhood Experiences And Working Memory, Lake Miller
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Extensive research has shown that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as sexual abuse, poverty, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect, can negatively impact an individual’s development. The presence of ACEs has also been linked to an increase in one’s engagement in risky behavior, dropping out of school, unemployment before the age of 21, and a variety of health issues. Currently, there is a gap in literature regarding the performance of different working memory (WM) tasks and the presence of ACEs. This study focuses on filling this gap in literature by measuring participants’ Philadelphia ACE score, which is a 16-item questionnaire, …

Beyond The Script: How Theatre Shapes Motivation In Second Language Acquisition, Amaya B. Gattis
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Motivation is considered a significant factor in second language acquisition, potentially affecting language learners' language acquisition ability (Dörnyei, 1998). This study explored the impact of participating in a theatre experience on language learners’ motivation to learn English during a classroom experience. The main objective of this research was to assess the influence of performing in a short play on adult multilingual learners’ motivation to learn English. A mixed-methodology research design was employed to measure reported motivation levels and observe language development using a pre- and post-treatment questionnaire, field observation, and a semi-structured post-treatment interview model for data collection. The results …
How To Join Teams: Individual Factors That Influence An Incoming Team Member’S Understanding Of The Team’S Shared Mental Models, Madeline Filippi
How To Join Teams: Individual Factors That Influence An Incoming Team Member’S Understanding Of The Team’S Shared Mental Models, Madeline Filippi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study examined the effect of various individual differences on accuracy of incoming team members’ learning the team’s task and team shared mental models by leveraging literature on shared mental models and team member replacement. The four individual differences (openness to experience, perspective taking, social curiosity and trait negative affect) were hypothesized to positively impact the incoming team member’s ability to understand the team’s shared mental models through the theoretical mechanism of cue identification. Participants were asked to imagine they were entering a student organization executive team and based on characteristics (responsibilities, preferences, attitudes) of the team members in the …
Motion Extrapolation And Motion Dynamics: Are The Motion Dynamics Of Friction Utilized During Motion Extrapolation To Inform Time-To-Contact Estimations?, Genna Telschow
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Cognitive processing delays should cause us to respond too late when making time-to-contact estimations. According to the theory of constructivism, the brain accounts for these delays by supplementing sensory information with higher level cognitive information to create an accurate motion percept. Across the attention, memory, and motion extrapolation literatures there is evidence supporting the use of higher-level information, like motion dynamics, to supplement our visual input. Specifically, previous research suggests we may account for friction’s constraints on motion when interacting with dynamic stimuli. The current research utilizes features that represent friction as both a stopping agent and a motion catalyst …
Older Adult Centered Robot Assessment: Usability, Social Presence, And Acceptance. Building Towards A Better Robot., Jordan Sasser
Older Adult Centered Robot Assessment: Usability, Social Presence, And Acceptance. Building Towards A Better Robot., Jordan Sasser
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation investigated factors influencing older adults' perceptions of Misty, a voice-enabled social robot designed for caregiving interactions. Three sequential studies explored how voice characteristics (pitch and speech rate), robot persona (personable vs. robotic), and task guidance (Misty guiding through timed up and go and four stage balance task) influenced usability, social presence, acceptance, and perceptions of medical assistant competence. Study 1 employed thematic and quantitative usability analyses, identifying that lower-pitched, moderately paced voices optimized user satisfaction, while repetitive activation phrases ("Hey Misty") significantly reduced usability. Study 2 examined how persona framing (personable vs. robotic) influenced perceptions of social presence …
Going Green: Testing An Ambient Nature Work Environment As An Employee Energy Charger, Nina D. Steigerwald
Going Green: Testing An Ambient Nature Work Environment As An Employee Energy Charger, Nina D. Steigerwald
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Amidst rising levels of employee burnout, research on recovery from work stress has been on the rise. Organizational scholars examining predictors of recovery have almost exclusively relied on the Effort-Recovery Model (Meijman & Mulder, 1998), positing the absence of work demands as a prerequisite for resource restoration. Departing from this perspective and envisioning recovery akin to recharging a battery, the Nature Charger Model was proposed. It suggests that employee energy rejuvenation can occur even in the presence of demands. Specifically, drawing from alternative frameworks (Kaplan & Kaplan’s 1989 Attention Restoration Theory; Brosschot et al.’s 2018 Generalized Unsafety Theory of Stress), …
The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Child Maltreatment Potential With Racial And Ethnic Considerations, Madison V. Verdone
The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Child Maltreatment Potential With Racial And Ethnic Considerations, Madison V. Verdone
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Referrals to Child Protective Services in the United States rise each year at a rate that is disproportionate to population growth (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). The content of such reports includes instances of abuse, neglect, and/or suspicion of other types of violence against children. As such, it is clear that children are increasingly exposed to adverse experiences that impact their development. Understanding factors that may contribute to children’s exposure to adverse experiences may assist in breaking the cycle of intergenerational transmission. Thus, this study examined the relationships among parents’ adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), emotion dysregulation, and …
Sexual And Gender Minority Identity Acceptance And The Role Of Florida Legislation Perception On Medical Disclosure And Risky Health Behaviors, Aubrianna L. Stuckey
Sexual And Gender Minority Identity Acceptance And The Role Of Florida Legislation Perception On Medical Disclosure And Risky Health Behaviors, Aubrianna L. Stuckey
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Recently, across the United States, efforts have been made to remove protective legislation and resources surrounding the sexual gender minority (SGM) community (Woodford et al., 2018). Given how quickly Florida’s HB 1557 legislation was passed and the corresponding, ongoing attempts to expand the bills, there is limited research exploring the role of legislative change on SGM communities. Newer literature indicates that discriminatory laws or bills have impacted the mental health of the SGM community, especially among SGM adolescent and young adults ; however, research exploring the role legislation has on SGM individual’s physical health, requires further investigation(American Psychological Association, 2023; …
Burnout In The Workplace- Organizational Influences On Counselor Burnout, Serene Hasan
Burnout In The Workplace- Organizational Influences On Counselor Burnout, Serene Hasan
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study is a two-part manuscript dissertation that examined the impact of the six organizational influencers of burnout: Workload, Control, Reward, Community, Fairness, and Values on mental health counselors’ (MHCs) burnout, using Maslach’s three subscales of burnout: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Additionally, Work Setting and Age were assessed for their influence on MHC burnout, when the six organizational influencers were accounted for. The focus on this topic is crucial as burnout has a detrimental effect on counselors, clients, and organizations. The growing population in need of support surpasses the amount of MHCs that our nation has to offer. …
Quality Of Service Robots And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: The Mediating Roles Of State Empathy And Perceived Organizational Support/Obstruction, Adam D. Jacobs
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Research on service robots is currently more conceptual than it is empirical. This thesis leverages resource allocation and social exchange theories to explain how employees choose to expend their resources depending on the functioning of the service robot. I propose that service robot quality (defined here as an employee’s perception of the usefulness and ease of use of a service robot) is an important consideration for organizations that adopt service robots, and hypothesize that employee state empathy and support (or obstruction) from their organization links service robot quality to employee organizational citizenship behaviors. The study consisted of 166 participants from …
An Involuntary Motive Of Voluntary Behavior: An Investigation Of The Causes And The Consequences Of Citizenship Pressure, Junyoung Hong
An Involuntary Motive Of Voluntary Behavior: An Investigation Of The Causes And The Consequences Of Citizenship Pressure, Junyoung Hong
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation investigates citizenship pressure, defined as an individual’s perception of pressure to perform organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), by examining its conceptual boundaries, antecedents, behavioral outcomes, and underlying mechanisms. Study 1 used an item-sorting task with undergraduate participants to assess whether citizenship pressure is empirically distinct from related constructs such as OCB norms and workaholism. Substantial conceptual overlap prompted refinement of the construct and its measurement. Study 2 surveyed employees to examine how supervisor and coworker OCB demands, along with personality traits (conscientiousness and agreeableness), predict citizenship pressure at the between-person level. Although personality traits showed no direct effects, they …

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
PURPOSE: Young adult (YA) alcohol use remains a significant public health problem, and may be influenced by alcohol expectancies developed through exposure to peers’ alcohol related content (ARC) on social media. This study examined the associations among ARC exposure, alcohol expectancies and alcohol use among YAs, and how susceptibility to peer influence and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) may influence these relations. METHOD: YAs in the United States who endorsed consuming 1-2 standard drinks per month (N=371) completed surveys measuring ARC exposure, alcohol expectancies, susceptibility to peer influence, FoMO, and alcohol use at baseline and at 4- and 8-week follow …
The Role Of Social Media On Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Self-Esteem Imposter Phenomenon, And Identity Distress, Julie Hall
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis explored the relationships between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), self-esteem, masking, Imposter Phenomenon (IP), and identity distress, along with the role in which social media integration plays in these relationships. Participants (N = 500) were recruited through SONA, a research recruitment database, and completed an anonymous online survey for course credit. Those who met the DSM-5 -TR criteria for ADHD had higher levels of IP, integration of social media, and Identity Distress, but lower levels of self-esteem compared to students who did not meet criteria for ADHD. This study is the first to explore the link between ADHD and …
Hallucinogen Usage, Experiencing Mystical Phenomena, And Transformational Identity Change, Cameron Hyder
Hallucinogen Usage, Experiencing Mystical Phenomena, And Transformational Identity Change, Cameron Hyder
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study seeks to understand the therapeutic potential of multiple prominent hallucinogens (LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, Cannabis, and DMT) by examining corresponding posttraumatic growth, transformational identity change, and experience(s) of mystical phenomena. College students (N = 278) completed an anonymous online survey. The data was analyzed to assess hallucinogen usage history and possible changes, as well as any significant differences between each hallucinogen. Participants were first asked about their hallucinogen usage including which hallucinogens they have specifically used, number of uses, age of first use, and the last time they used. They were also asked to rate their short-term vs …
Confirming The Factor Structure Of The Police Officer Stigma Scale, Daniel R. Horning
Confirming The Factor Structure Of The Police Officer Stigma Scale, Daniel R. Horning
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
First responders routinely face exposure to critical incidents within the line of duty, resulting in higher prevalence of psychopathological conditions compared to the general population. However, a growing body of research identified a severe underutilization of mental health-related services among this population, with stigma towards mental illness being the most cited barrier to seeking care. Stigma as a construct is being actively measured, but the factor structure of stigma towards mental health remains contested in literature. Optimal model fit for Stuart’s Police Officer Stigma Scale is an example of these empirical debates, as both single-factor and two-factor models are offered …
Digital Biomarkers Of Usability, Steven Ford
Digital Biomarkers Of Usability, Steven Ford
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Usability, the extent to which a product can be used with satisfaction and efficiency, is critical for its success, yet traditional assessment methods are often subjective or resource-intensive. This dissertation adapts the concept of digital biomarkers—objective, quantifiable data typically used to inform health outcomes—to summative usability assessment. By examining passively collected mouse and eye movement data, this research pinpoints reliable digital biomarkers that forecast subjective usability ratings, effectively assessing the 'health' of digital systems. Three studies were conducted to demonstrate that metrics based on eye and mouse-cursor movements can accurately predict standard usability survey scores across a wide array of …
The Role Of Substance Use And Objectification On Bisexual Women’S Sexual Violence Experiences, Rachel Cooper
The Role Of Substance Use And Objectification On Bisexual Women’S Sexual Violence Experiences, Rachel Cooper
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Bisexual women experience the highest rates of sexual violence victimization, across all tactics, compared to all other gender and sexual orientation groups. Bisexual women’s higher rates of substance use puts them at greater risk for substance-facilitated sexual violence, however this does not account for higher rates of sexual violence that happen through other tactics. Objectification theory states that people learn to view women as sexual objects, whose value derives from their bodies’ sexual utility and this view increases the likelihood of sexual violence. Bisexual women experience an additional form of objectification in the form of bisexual stigma which is characterized …
Exploring Fake News Detection: Unpacking Polarization, Ambiguity, And Associated Neural Mechanisms, Shayna R. Soares
Exploring Fake News Detection: Unpacking Polarization, Ambiguity, And Associated Neural Mechanisms, Shayna R. Soares
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
A pertinent next step in investigating fake news, is exploring the inherent ambiguity of news headlines through the lens of uncertain decision-making theories. Few studies have done so while investigating the established neural correlates associated with uncertainty in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). A set of three studies was conducted examining the underlying neural mechanisms associated with ambiguity of news headlines, individuals’ polarization, and their decision behavior. Study 1 validated news headlines in terms of ambiguity (1-7 scale). Experiment 1 investigated choice behavior in an uncertain decision task with ambiguous news headlines, while recording activation in the prefrontal cortex using fNIRS. …
A Story Of Oppression A Psychological And Creative Approach, Juan R. Morillo
A Story Of Oppression A Psychological And Creative Approach, Juan R. Morillo
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The aim of this project is to survey the manner in which oppression is expressed in selected works of literature. It is a topic that not only am I familiar with through my studies of literature and psychology, but one that I, as well as every Venezuelan expatriate has witnessed and felt for their country. The project focuses on social and political oppression, using the current Venezuelan crisis as a focal point, and selected literary sources as a framework. I will analyze dystopian classics such as George Orwell's 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, as well as Margaret Atwood’s The …
