The Value Of Balance: Exploring Timelessness Of Narrative Styles And Character Dynamics Through Animation, Jessica Gray
The Value Of Balance: Exploring Timelessness Of Narrative Styles And Character Dynamics Through Animation, Jessica Gray
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Dazzling: A Timekeepers Tale is a 2D/3D animated short film that explores timeless storytelling, perception of time, anthropomorphism, and friendship. The film illustrates the necessity for balance between curiosity and caution when striving to learn. Through the dual protagonists’ contrasting personalities, they reach a deeper understanding of each other, thus learning the value of balance. This theme was constructed around a fantasy space that will function as a means of understanding varying perceptions of time. Thesis research explores ideas of balance between traditional Western narrative structures such as the Hero’s Journey, Aesopic fables, and Buddy Comedy within a combination of …
Leading The Newsroom: Exploring The Development Of Management And Leadership Skills In College Journalism Students, Guilherme Hiray Leal
Leading The Newsroom: Exploring The Development Of Management And Leadership Skills In College Journalism Students, Guilherme Hiray Leal
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The purpose of this study is to examine the management and leadership skills that are developed in college journalism and how that experience and training prepares students for the challenges of reporting for, managing, and leading in today’s journalism businesses. I explored leadership (e.g. influence in the newsroom culture) of young journalists in student media, such as what skills are being emphasized by their advisers. This study utilizes gatekeeping theory to connect its main points with leadership-related characteristics. Findings show that the support and training students in student media receive are more directly related to management as opposed to leadership. …
The Impact Of Virtual Backgrounds In Video-Mediated Selection And The Role Of Candidate Qualifications, Mira Gruber
The Impact Of Virtual Backgrounds In Video-Mediated Selection And The Role Of Candidate Qualifications, Mira Gruber
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Videoconferencing allows users to manage their self-presentation through virtual backgrounds that mask their immediate physical environment. Prior research suggests that backgrounds depicting professional home spaces (e.g., bookshelves) elicit more favorable impressions than those that depict personal home spaces (e.g., bedrooms). Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT) provides a framework for understanding such effects. The present dissertation applied EVT to video-mediated selection interviews, that have become increasingly popular since the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the strict expectations for professionalism in interviews, virtual backgrounds that deviate from such expectations may negatively impact hiring decisions. Consequently, this work examined the impact of two virtual background types, …
The Dual Dynamics Of Succession: Unveiling The Interplay Among The Former Leader, The New Leader, And Followers' Implicit Theories Of Leadership On Subsequent Leader Evaluations, Emily Hill
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Leader succession is the planned or unplanned change in formal leadership at an organization. Ample research has investigated the effects of leader succession at higher levels of leadership on team and organizational performance, yet little is known about the effects of leadership changes at lower levels of management on followers’ reactions to their new leader. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) and contrast effect theory (Markman & McMullen, 2003), this dissertation empirically tested a model in which the congruence of followers’ implicit theories of leadership with characteristics of the new leader were expected to influence three leader-related …

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis investigates the application of Whisper V3 which is a state-of-the-art, multilingual automatic speech recognition model to Arabic Speech Emotion Recognition (SER). Building on the foundational work of Muhammad Firdho, who adapted Whisper architectures for emotion classification tasks, this study extends his approach to the context of Arabic, a language characterized by rich dialectal diversity, complex morphology, and unique prosodic features.Although Whisper V3 was primarily designed for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), its latent representations appear to capture paralinguistic cues that can be leveraged for emotion classification. Muhammad Firdho laid the basis for this study by showing the ability of …
Investigating The Efficacy Of A Novel Law Enforcement Use Of Force Training Simulation, Justin D. Lane
Investigating The Efficacy Of A Novel Law Enforcement Use Of Force Training Simulation, Justin D. Lane
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Realistic scenario based training (SBT) is an effective method used to prepare police officers for real world use of force incidents. Many law enforcement agencies are unable to host regular SBT due to time, cost, and facility constraints. A novel simulation training approach was investigated to determine if it may be a suitable alternative or supplement to traditional SBT at reduced cost, time, and increased frequency. This novel scenario based simulation training (SBST) environment combined physical and virtual elements into a single training scenario. A physical space, designed to depict the scene of a critical incident, was equipped with immersive …
Perezhivanie In Practice: Exploring Affective Memory And Imagination Through The Stanislavski System, Paige E. Mason
Perezhivanie In Practice: Exploring Affective Memory And Imagination Through The Stanislavski System, Paige E. Mason
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis explores the enduring significance of The Stanislavski System in modern American actor training, addressing why it remains essential over a century after its creation by Konstantin Stanislavski. While studying the history of how The Stanislavski System was introduced and adapted in America, I identified a fundamental divide that shaped actor training: Lee Strasberg emphasized affective memory to generate emotion, while Stella Adler advocated for imagination to connect with character. Their public dispute has had a lasting impact on American theatre pedagogy, often leaving actors caught between methodologies without a clear understanding of the System’s original intent. At the …
Millennials And Generation Z Customers' Service Recovery Evaluation From A Self-Esteem Perspective, Megan Mcdade
Millennials And Generation Z Customers' Service Recovery Evaluation From A Self-Esteem Perspective, Megan Mcdade
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
While a significant amount of research has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of service recovery based on various factors, there is limited research on emerging customer segments, specifically Generation Z and Millennials. Justice theory has been predominant in service recovery literature, however, recent studies suggest that self-esteem can provide valuable insight into understanding customers’ evaluations of service recovery. This research focuses on how Generation Z and Millennial customers evaluate service recovery efforts in the context of restaurants. The main objective of this study is to examine how these customers perceive economic (compensation) and psychological (apology) service recovery strategies, considering …
Gothic Girlhood Horrors, Nina M. Lopez
Gothic Girlhood Horrors, Nina M. Lopez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Gothic Girlhood Horrors is a collection of creative nonfiction examining the formative experiences of girlhood. Through experimental essays, short stories, and other forms of prose, it investigates how universal and personal a young woman’s experiences can be. Part I, “HOW TO BECOME A GIRL,” opens with a coming-of-age story. “GIRL CRAZY” takes inspiration from memoirist Elissa Washuta’s “Sexually Based Offenses,” with the narrator engaging in a hypothetical conversation. Some essays explore the narrator’s relationship with motherhood; others delve into the complex relationship with her own mother. Key moments of girlhood are highlighted, such as dying hair (“let down your hair”) …

This project consists primarily of the interest in Video Based Learning (VBL) and understanding the impacts of a video based on the connections between John Coltrane’s song Acknowledgement on the Jazz suite A Love Supreme to the Civil Rights movement and systemic racism. Research confirms that VBL has an impact on student learning, yet this project finds that because of the content of the video, it fits into scholarship where there are gaps. The methodological approach, which was qualitative, found that students were overall enlightened, entertained, and were interested in learning more. Other findings include suggestions and recommendations for future …
Humanity In The Calamity: Hurricane Andrew, The Cold War, And The Demilitarization Of Fema, 1993 – 2002., Luis R. Rios Iii
Humanity In The Calamity: Hurricane Andrew, The Cold War, And The Demilitarization Of Fema, 1993 – 2002., Luis R. Rios Iii
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Humanity in the Calamity maps out the erroneous land practices that damned the American population to build in the state of Florida in a manner that does not fit the fluid landscape of the environment. Throughout history, as Americans built up Florida on the threatened coastline, the doctrines of disaster polities and emergency management were birthed under the influence of Civil Defense, induced by the militaristic agendas of the Cold War. The influence of Cold War-Era Civil Defense clouded the field of emergency management and FEMA, limiting the response to natural disasters making disasters more violent and deadly.
These issues …

Macabre Therapeutics: An Exploration Into The Cathartic Nature Of Splatter Utilizing The Saw Franchise As Corpus, Rosalind E. Rohrbaugh
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This project positions splatter (a subgenre of horror films that centralizes gore) as applicable for sociopolitical critique and emotional catharsis, disrupting the narrative of splatter as a solely shock-based enterprise. The project utilizes the Saw franchise as a corpus, which reignited audience interest in extreme horror in 2004, rejuvenating splatter film releases since their stagnancy throughout the 1990s. This research seeks to answer why Saw captured the attention of audiences and returned the splatter subgenre to the 21st century, utilizing psychoanalytical film analysis, sociopolitical analysis, semiotics, content analysis, and archival research as methodology and drawing on Aristotle’s Catharsis and Rhetorical …
On The Pedagogy Of Modes, Joshua M. Sanfilippo
On The Pedagogy Of Modes, Joshua M. Sanfilippo
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Undergraduate music students in their junior and senior years have a solid foundation in music fundamentals based on the four-semester music theory sequence taken during their sophomore and junior years, but most have a weakness in the area of diatonic modes. This is not to say that they are unaware of the modes or that they do not understand how to identify or construct them, but rather that students are unable to conceptualize modality in a pre-tonal context. To the modern undergraduate music student, the modes blossomed out of the major scale—a notion counter to historical truth. This backwards way …
Sketching Towards Character: An Actor's Process Of Reclaiming The Mind-Body Connection, Lauren E. Schulke
Sketching Towards Character: An Actor's Process Of Reclaiming The Mind-Body Connection, Lauren E. Schulke
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The human body is capable of incredible things. It completes vital functions autonomically, can instinctively protect us from harm, helps us sense, process, and respond to the world we inhabit, and can even heal itself when necessary. But what happens when an actor, who is dependent on their body to express their artistry, has lost awareness of their material? With the help of this thesis and the crafting of a personal methodology, I have developed a process that works towards healing this fracture and encourages the initial crafting of character through embodiment.
This thesis details the evolution of a personal …

A user study involving 24 participants was conducted comparing the Chariot System …
Under Control, Eric Tegethoff
Under Control, Eric Tegethoff
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Under Control is a collection of six short stories focused on masculinity. The stories explore family, climate change, nationalism, and the nature of work. “A Survey of Man” and “Snake Pit” dive into the corrosive effects of capitalism on men in society. In “The Art of War,” the narrator finds the cost of pursuing healing outside of society’s prescribed norms. Society’s norms also act on the characters in “My Country, My Cybertruck” and “Bad Reporting.” The collection ends with “Virtual Idaho,” a short story that scrutinizes the masculine barriers to properly grieving for a loved one.
Small Ripple, Big Waves: Individual Political Attitudes, Populism, Illiberalism And Democratic Resilience, Paulo Ricardo Valle
Small Ripple, Big Waves: Individual Political Attitudes, Populism, Illiberalism And Democratic Resilience, Paulo Ricardo Valle
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Why do individuals who support democracy also endorse populist and illiberal attitudes? Current literature focuses efforts on exploring the role that institutions and political actors have in democracy resilience (Levitsky & Ziblatt, 2019; Merkel & Lührmann, 2021). However, relatively few academic works have examined this phenomenon at the individual level. With the aim to exploring the causal effect between individual political attitudes, anti-democratic threats, and democratic resilience at the individual level, this study applies a micro-level theoretical approach to assess how individuals’ political attitudes toward populism and illiberalism affect their support for democratic values. To test the hypotheses, this study …

Hetero-Cisgender Rituals: The Oppression Of Sexual- And Gender-Minoritized People, Bertha A. Ben Khallouq
Hetero-Cisgender Rituals: The Oppression Of Sexual- And Gender-Minoritized People, Bertha A. Ben Khallouq
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Among the groups that experience health inequalities in the United States, sexual- and gender-minoritized people figure prominently. Medical practitioners are tasked with alleviating these health inequalities, and it has been suggested that through the education of new physicians, we can decrease these inequalities. This perspective, however, neglects that medical students are social actors and their socialization begins long before medical school. In the present study, I develop a framework for understanding hetero-cisgender rituals that medical students experience and participate in before starting their medical training. I answer three research questions: (1) To what extent do medical students witness hetero-cisgender rituals? …
Parents’ Adverse Childhood Experiences And Young Children’S Behavior Problems: Examining Protective Moderating And Mediating Factors, Kaitlyn M. Daleandro
Parents’ Adverse Childhood Experiences And Young Children’S Behavior Problems: Examining Protective Moderating And Mediating Factors, Kaitlyn M. Daleandro
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are childhood exposures to abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. ACEs have been linked to a cumulative negative impact on later adult physical and psychological well-being. Parents who carry ACEs often have difficulties in parenting, which have, in turn, been linked to young children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Nonetheless, some parents who carry ACEs develop positive parenting strategies. Very little is known about how such outcomes occur. A growing area of research concerns protective and compensatory experiences (PACEs) that buffer against the negative consequences of ACEs. PACEs may improve deficits in cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological systems …

A New Dawn Of Joy: How Joy Is Cultivated Among Black Transgender And Nonbinary Young Adults In Florida, Courtney Marciá Gardner
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The state of Florida had a record-breaking number of implemented and proposed policies between 2023-2024 that impacted transgender and nonbinary individuals. Black transgender and nonbinary people are particularly impacted by these policies due to the compounded effects of their race and gender identity. Nonetheless, despite the growing literature on Black transgender and nonbinary individuals, a lack of research exists examining positive aspects of intersectional experiences among Black transgender and nonbinary individuals. This qualitative study shifts away from deficit centered frameworks by investigating how Black transgender and nonbinary young adults in Florida cultivate joy in their lives. This study uses a …

Transformation To Re-Engagement: A Temporal Analysis Of Tefl Tourism Experiences, Brianna Morman
Transformation To Re-Engagement: A Temporal Analysis Of Tefl Tourism Experiences, Brianna Morman
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study investigates the psychological and behavioral transformation resulting from long-term cultural immersion, using TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) tourism as a lens to examine how deep, lasting change unfolds. While prior literature has primarily classified TEFL as a niche form of tourism, its potential to facilitate enduring personal transformation has not been empirically assessed. This research addresses that gap by applying Transformative Learning Theory and the Model of Transformation within the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework to explore how TEFL experiences lead to transformation, satisfaction, and long-term re-engagement. Uniquely, the study also examines two underexplored temporal moderators – duration …

Becoming Black In A Divided Diaspora: Identity, Human Security, And The Intra-Group Dynamics Of African Americans And African Immigrants, Pleasant O. Ogedengbe
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation examines the formation of a shared Black identity among Native Black/African Americans and African immigrants in the United States through an expanded intersectional framework that integrates Social Identity Theory (SIT), Intergroup Contact Theory, and Secondary Marginalization Theory, all under the broader lens of human security. Human security is broadly defined as the protection of individuals from critical threats to their dignity, survival, and livelihood. It is deeply implicated in the experiences of Black communities confronting systemic racism and social exclusion. This study conceptualizes shared identity as a socio-psychological construct and a protective mechanism that enhances group-level resilience and …
Examining Information Flows Within Transformer Models Using Transfer Entropy, Clayton Barham
Examining Information Flows Within Transformer Models Using Transfer Entropy, Clayton Barham
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence, in terms of both power and prevalence, motivates the need for new ways to study explainability in deep neural networks. This is especially true for transformer architectures and large language models, which are the driving force behind the current surge in artificial intelligence. The complexity of transformer architecture foils many pre-existing methods for studying explainability in deep neural networks. To address this gap in knowledge, this dissertation proposes a new method of studying explainability in transformer architectures that leverages insights from neuroscience, employing transfer entropy to map information flows between components of the transformer …

Skeletal Embodiment Of Structural Violence: Testing Application Of The Weathering Hypothesis In Analyses Of Identified Sex, Jasper K. Shaw
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Structural violence refers to the experiences of inequality faced by marginalized sex, gender, race, and socioeconomic groups. Unequal access to healthcare, housing, and education can cause poor health that may affect how a decedent is analyzed by forensic anthropologists. This research hypothesizes that, due to gender- and sex-based marginalization, females will display greater rates of stress and correlated accelerated aging (i.e., weathering), than males. Computed tomography scans from 100 males and 99 females aged 20-69 years old and white and middle class, were sampled from the New Mexico Decedent Image Database (NMDID). Stress was assessed via cranial porosities, antemortem tooth …

The quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of four vocabulary tasks on the learning and retention of English phrasal verbs (PVs). University Intensive English Program students (91) completed one of the following tasks: One Fill-in-the-Blank, Three Fill-in-the-Blank, Sentence Writing, and Composition Writing. Their knowledge of eight target PVs was measured using a modified vocabulary knowledge scale at three points: pretest, immediate posttest, and delayed posttest (two weeks later). A mixed factorial ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between task and time. Follow-up repeated-measures and one-way ANOVAs showed that the Three Fill-in-the-Blank produced the highest scores on both posttests. Consistent with findings on …
The Impact Of Social And Political Capital On Black Male Educational Leaders Lived Experiences With Hiring Practices: A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Descriptive Study, Travis L. Brown
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
According to Woodson and Pabon (2016, as cited in Bass, 2020) Black males represent less than 2% of the US public education workforce. This is concerning considering that many schools across the nation are becoming increasingly diverse. Scholars such as Bass (2020) have even cited that classrooms “may never completely rebound” (p. 356) from finding Black men to fill vacant teaching positions which could ultimately lead to a career in educational leadership. filling classrooms with available Black men in the profession. This study employed a convergent parallel mixed method design within a descriptive research framework to examine the impact of …
