Ugh…Statistics! College Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward Statistics, Drew A. Doyle
Ugh…Statistics! College Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward Statistics, Drew A. Doyle
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Statistics is a course that is required for a majority of undergraduate college students in a wide variety of majors. It is not just required for Statistics or Mathematics majors, but also for those undergraduate college students majoring in Biology, Engineering, Sociology, and countless other majors. It can often be seen as a daunting course, especially for those who feel that mathematics is not their strongest subject. Students begin to dislike the course before even starting and this can carry on throughout the entirety of the course. This thesis will focus primarily on students’ perceptions and attitudes toward their statistics …

To Gender Identity And Beyond: Does Femininity Lead To A Higher Risk Of Depression?, Dana L. Arnold
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The current study explored the possible links between gender identity, personality, and the experience of depression in a male and female sample. 260 University of Central Florida (UCF) Psychology students completed assessments of depression, “Big Five” personality traits, and gender identity. Correlational analyses revealed significant, positive associations between “Big Five” neuroticism scores and depression scores. Additionally, significant, negative correlations were found between masculinity scores and depression, as well as between femininity scores and depression. Although these correlations were significant, their general effect was small. Overall, additional research must be completed to further examine and validate these findings.

A Structural And Functional Analysis Of Human Brain Mri With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Arjun A. Watane
A Structural And Functional Analysis Of Human Brain Mri With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Arjun A. Watane
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects 5-10% of children worldwide. Its effects are mainly behavioral, manifesting in symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. If not monitored and treated, ADHD may adversely affect a child's health, education, and social life. Furthermore, the neurological disorder is currently diagnosed through interviews and opinions of teachers, parents, and physicians. Because this is a subjective method of identifying ADHD, it is easily prone to error and misdiagnosis. Therefore, there is a clear need to develop an objective diagnostic method for ADHD.
The focus of this study is to explore the use of machine language …
Using Low-Coherence Interferometry To Monitor Cell Invasion In An In-Vitro Model System, Behnaz Davoudi Nasab
Using Low-Coherence Interferometry To Monitor Cell Invasion In An In-Vitro Model System, Behnaz Davoudi Nasab
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In an optically random system, such as naturally occurring and man-made media, light undergoes pronounced multiple scattering. This phenomenon has shown a remarkable potential in characterizing complex materials. In this regime, scattering occurs from each individual center of the scattering and independent scattering events lead to multiple light scattering. This phenomenon is often described as a random walk of photons and can be modeled in terms of a diffusion equation based on the radiative transfer theory. In this thesis, we used optical path-length spectroscopy (OPS), which is an experimental method to obtain the path-length probability density of the propagating light …

Power Distribution Of Terahertz Emission From Hexagonal Bscco Microstrip Antennas, Andrew E. Davis
Power Distribution Of Terahertz Emission From Hexagonal Bscco Microstrip Antennas, Andrew E. Davis
Honors Undergraduate Theses
We analyze the distribution of coherent terahertz radiation from a regular hexagonal microstrip antenna (MSA) made from the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO). We discuss the C6v symmetry of the solutions of the wave equation on a hexagonal domain and distinguish between the closed-form and non-closed-form solutions. The closed-form wavefunctions of the transverse magnetic (TM) electromagnetic cavity modes are presented and formulas for the radiated power arising from the uniform part of the AC Josephson current and from the resonant cavity modes are derived. The wavefunctions and angular distribution of radiation from …
Literature Review On The Use Of Nucleic Acid-Based Logic Gates For The Detection Of Human Diseases, Enrique J. Blanco Martinez
Literature Review On The Use Of Nucleic Acid-Based Logic Gates For The Detection Of Human Diseases, Enrique J. Blanco Martinez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Conventional methods for diagnosis of human disease are, at times, limited in different regards including time requirement, either experimental or data processing, sensitivity, and selectivity. It is then that a Point of Care Criteria, which considers the true utility and usefulness of the device, is employed to propose new diagnostic devices capable of overcoming the aforementioned shortcomings of conventional tools. Nucleic acid, characterized for its predictable base-pairing nature, is considered to be a highly-selective, yet greatly modifiable device. Its behavior is then described through Boolean Logic, where “true” or “false” outputs are mathematically described as “1” and “0”, respectively. This …

Identifying The Effects Of A Human Dynein Mutation On Gfp-Rab7 Axonal Transport In Embryonic Mouse Neurons, Natalie E. Wilson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The first dynein mutation found in humans that caused disease was a cytoplasmic dynein 1 heavy chain (DYNC1H1 in humans) p.His306Arg mutation, first described by Weedon et al. in 2011. This mutation caused Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) subtype 2O. CMT has a prevalence of approximately 1 in 2500 people, making it the most common hereditary neuromuscular disorder. Cytoplasmic dynein 1 is used by eukaryotic cells for minus-end directed microtubule-based transport of cargo. One such cargo is Rab7, a late endosomal marker. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of this mutation on the transport of GFP-tagged Rab7 cargo in …
Atmospheric Entry, Dillon A. Martin
Atmospheric Entry, Dillon A. Martin
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The development of atmospheric entry guidance methods is crucial to achieving the requirements for future missions to Mars; however, many missions implement a unique controller which are spacecraft specific. Here we look at the implementation of neural networks as a baseline controller that will work for a variety of different spacecraft. To accomplish this, a simulation is developed and validated with the Apollo controller. A feedforward neural network controller is then analyzed and compared to the Apollo case.
Micro-Spectroscopy Of Bio-Assemblies At The Single Cell Level, Jeslin Kera
Micro-Spectroscopy Of Bio-Assemblies At The Single Cell Level, Jeslin Kera
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, we investigate biological molecules on a micron scale in the ultraviolet spectral region through the non-destructive confocal absorption microscopy. The setup involves a combination of confocal microscope with a UV light excitation beam to measure the optical absorption spectra with spatial resolution of 1.4 μm in the lateral and 3.6 μm in the axial direction. Confocal absorption microscopy has the benefits of requiring no labels and only low light intensity for excitation while providing a strong signal from the contrast generated by the attenuation of propagating light due to absorption. This enables spatially resolved measurements of single …
Advanced Castes At The Outset Of Eusociality In Wasps (Vespidae), Patrick Piekarski
Advanced Castes At The Outset Of Eusociality In Wasps (Vespidae), Patrick Piekarski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A dominating and widespread view is that evolutionary change is gradual and waits upon mutation. Likewise, it is thought that workers and queens of eusocial insects diverged gradually and stepwise. That is, rudimentary castes preceded advanced castes. This paradigm hinges on eusociality having evolved once in Vespidae, and primitively eusocial paper wasps lacking ontogenetic caste biasing (differentiation of castes during larval development). Using a phylogenomic approach this study shows strong evidence for two origins of eusociality in vespid wasps, wherein one origin is likely characterized by the sudden appearance of castes with physiological, and perhaps even morphological, differences established before …

Mesoscopic Interactions In Complex Photonic Media, Roxana Rezvani Naraghi
Mesoscopic Interactions In Complex Photonic Media, Roxana Rezvani Naraghi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mesoscale optics provides a framework for understanding a wide range of phenomena occurring in a variety of fields ranging from biological tissues to composite materials and from colloidal physics to fabricated nanostructures. When light interacts with a complex system, the outcome depends significantly on the length and time scales of interaction. Mesoscale optics offers the apparatus necessary for describing specific manifestations of wave phenomena such as interference and phase memory in complex media. In-depth understanding of mesoscale phenomena provides the required quantitative explanations that neither microscopic nor macroscopic models of light-matter interaction can afford. Modeling mesoscopic systems is challenging because …

Data Representation In Machine Learning Methods With Its Application To Compilation Optimization And Epitope Prediction, Yevgeniy Sher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation we explore the application of machine learning algorithms to compilation phase order optimization, and epitope prediction. The common thread running through these two disparate domains is the type of data being dealt with. In both problem domains we are dealing with categorical data, with its representation playing a significant role in the performance of classification algorithms. We first present a neuroevolutionary approach which orders optimization phases to generate compiled programs with performance superior to those compiled using LLVM's -O3 optimization level. Performance improvements calculated as the speed of the compiled program's execution ranged from 27% for the …

The Effects Of Social Support And Working Alliance On Latino-American Male Combat Veterans, Lloyd Duran
The Effects Of Social Support And Working Alliance On Latino-American Male Combat Veterans, Lloyd Duran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The negative effects of traumatic combat experiences on combatants' psychological functioning is well documented in the literature. The Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) has resulted in many veterans returning from deployments with mental health conditions related to trauma exposure, such as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, general anxiety, and suicidality. Past researchers found significant ethnic differences in psychological functioning, with Latino-American veterans reporting more symptoms of PTSD. Furthermore, Latino-American cultural values place importance on collective orientation and secrecy of mental health concerns which may affect treatment. Thus, this study built on limited research about Latino-American male combat veterans by focusing on …
Consequences Of Altered Short-Chain Carbon Metabolism In Heart Failure, Julie Horton
Consequences Of Altered Short-Chain Carbon Metabolism In Heart Failure, Julie Horton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is currently the foremost cause of death within the United States. Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome defined by the inability of the heart to adequately execute requisite pump function in order to deliver nutrients and oxygen to peripheral tissues, irrespective of etiology. One of the most common causes of HF is chronic pressure overload due to hypertension. Ischemic heart disease is also a common driver of HF, often in conjunction with hypertension. Pressure overload initially causes compensatory metabolic changes. Structural changes follow shortly thereafter typically resulting in left ventricular hypertrophy. Eventually, the heart loses the ability to …
Go With The Flow: Patterns Of Connectivity In Low Dispersal Coral Reef Gobies (Coryphopterus Spp.) Throughout The Western Atlantic, Daniel Volk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gene flow is an integral biological process that can mediate speciation. While many consider the ocean to be an open environment, there are many barriers that limit gene flow, particularly in the western Atlantic. I analyzed data from two widespread, coral reef fishes, the bridled goby (Coryphopterus glaucofraenum) and sand-canyon goby (C. venezuelae), throughout their range in the western Atlantic. Using two genetic datasets, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and genomic SNPs, I investigated the evolutionary history of these species and inferred the location and strength of putative barriers. My results suggest that several unique lineages have genetically diverged from one another …
