A Multidimensional Analysis Of Stress Among Law Enforcement Officers And Insurance Underwriters, Susan K. Daniel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study compared stress levels between law enforcement officers and the civilian population as measured by systolic blood pressure, the State-Trait Personality Inventory, and the Anger Reaction Scale. The relationship between systolic blood pressure and the self report instruments was also investigated. Thirty Deputy Sheriffs from the street patrol division of the Sheriff's Department served as the law enforcement group and 20 underwriters for the Hartford Insurance Company were the civilian or control group. the Deputy Sheriffs had significantly higher average systolic blood pressure than the Hartford employees with the effects of covariates removed. The Effects Of Physical Fitness On Physiological Arousal And Self-Reports Of Stress, Barbara Rene Staggs Jan 1986

The Effects Of Physical Fitness On Physiological Arousal And Self-Reports Of Stress, Barbara Rene Staggs

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Fitness level and trait anxiety were used as "independent" variables in a multiple regression study with physiological arousal and self-reported anxiety to a stressor as the "dependent" variables. Fitness level was determined by an established rating system of frequency, type, and duration of aerobic activity in which the subject reportedly engaged. Trait anxiety level was assessed by the trait portion of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Sixty undergraduate subjects were exposed to a situational stressor of reciting a memorized paragraph while viewing themselves being videotaped. Outcome measures of systolic blood pressure and self-reported distress were taken at various points …

Postpartum Job Involvement, Rosemary D. Garris Jan 1986

Postpartum Job Involvement, Rosemary D. Garris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of mothers' employment on their children has been investigated repeatedly; however, there is little research on how motherhood affects womens' employment attitudes. The research being reported here addresses this question. Subjects consisted of 126 working pregnant women and a comparable group of 45 working non-pregnant women who completed four questionnaires soliciting measures of the following attitudes: job involvement, home role attitude, employment role attitude, and interaction strain. Modest support was found for the prediction that giving birth would affect mothers' attitudes. Job involvement was found to decline, and home role attitude was found to be less favorable after …

Concerns, Questions, And Changes In Small Colleges, Dale M. Jackson Oct 1985

Concerns, Questions, And Changes In Small Colleges, Dale M. Jackson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay analyzes the distinctive concerns facing faculty and administrators at small liberal arts colleges and considers the curricular developments likely to shape the communication discipline through the remainder of the decade. It argues that although faculty share universal issues such as salaries, tenure, and job security, the small college environment introduces unique pressures. These include heavy teaching loads, broad course preparation, intensive committee work, and heightened student expectations generated by close faculty student interaction. Faculty also express anxiety over the expanding influence of vocational demands and the potential displacement of liberal education, even as they work to help students …

Staffing The Basic Course And Still Having Flexibility To Meet Program Needs, Alan Lerstrom Oct 1985

Staffing The Basic Course And Still Having Flexibility To Meet Program Needs, Alan Lerstrom

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the use of undergraduate assistants as a strategy for staffing the basic communication course in small colleges while preserving faculty capacity to meet broader programmatic needs. It reviews literature across disciplines to identify recurrent considerations in employing student assistants, including selection criteria, training, laboratory activities, grading practices, and compensation. The analysis highlights pedagogical benefits associated with laboratory based instruction, particularly increased student participation, enhanced opportunities for practicing communication skills, and improved peer level feedback. It also addresses concerns about consistency and evaluation by describing an approach that standardizes laboratory activities while allowing individual assistants to shape group …

Burnout Syndrome: Fighting The Battle Between Inspiration And Desperation, David C. File Oct 1985

Burnout Syndrome: Fighting The Battle Between Inspiration And Desperation, David C. File

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the concept of burnout as it affects administrators of small college theatre programs and identifies the structural and psychological conditions that make these individuals particularly vulnerable. Burnout is defined as an emotional safeguard that emerges when the energy required to meet goal expectations exceeds an individual’s capacity, creating an imbalance between effort and perceived reward. Drawing on Freudenberger’s work and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the article argues that burnout develops when persistent striving toward unrealistic goals erodes the sense of self worth and shifts behavior from creative engagement to defensive self protection. The analysis explains how limited …

The study identifies programs through national tournament participation and enrollment criteria and provides descriptive data on team size, coaching assignments, release time, and travel frequency. Analysis reveals that small college forensics programs are highly active, with directors overseeing individual events and debate squads, organizing extensive tournament travel, and managing teams that range widely in size. The article details the substantial teaching and coaching loads carried …
