Recombinant Erythropoietin (Repo) Use For Anemia Of Prematurity- A Three-Year Single Center Experience, Hannah Darland, Krishna Dummula, Chaitali Mahajan, Vishal Pandey

Research Showcase

Background: Anemia is a common disorder of prematurity secondary to limited blood volume, excessive blood draws, inadequate nutrition, poor iron reserves, and insufficient endogenous erythropoietin. While many NICUs use recombinant erythropoietin (rEpo) to treat anemia of prematurity, the absence of universal guidelines has

led to variability in dosing and schedules. Here we present our experience on the use of rEpo in a level 3 NICU. Our unit protocol uses 400 IU/kg three times a week for a total of 9 doses if hematocrit < 30%.

Objectives/Goal: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response to rEpo in infants with anemia …

Introduction: School anxiety is common among adolescents with chronic pain and often impacts academic and social functioning. Existing anxiety measures lack specificity for capturing the unique sources and symptoms of school-related anxiety in this population. To address this gap, a bank of new potential measure items (the School Anxiety Inventory for Chronic Pain [SAI-CP]), was developed based on the original School Anxiety Inventory (SAI), qualitative interviews with adolescents with chronic pain, and expert clinician input. The objective of this study was to evaluate the construct validity and internal consistency of the SAI-CP and identify avenues for future measure refinement.

Exploring How Parental Involvement Impacts Police Encounters And Delinquent Behavior Among Black Adolescent Girls, Danielle V. Porter, Elizabeth Otto, Dyamon Brown, Jasmine Alli, Robyn Douglas, Noni Gaylord-Harden

Research Showcase

Adolescents’ contact with police is a complex outcome that is influenced by both individual behavior and the broader social context. Specifically, while delinquent behavior can lead to more police contact (Crutchfield et al., 2012), hyper-surveillance often occurs in marginalized communities, increasing unjustified police contact for youth of color (Campos-Manzo et al., 2020; Geller, 2021). Indeed, racial disparities in police contact during adolescence persist even after accounting for delinquent behavior (Campos-Manzo et al., 2020; Crutchfield et al., 2012). Thus, it is important to identify factors that may protect Black youth from contact with police. Parental involvement refers to parents’ active and …

The Risks Of Working As A Delivery Driver: A Case Study, Mackenzie Seaman May 2026

The Risks Of Working As A Delivery Driver: A Case Study, Mackenzie Seaman

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Sometimes, the workplace has demanding tasks that may not fit the person working on them. This case study follows S., a retired veteran, during his work as a delivery driver for Keurig Dr. Pepper, where he faces significant physical demands. He was meant to deliver 21,000 pounds of soda to many different stores per day, often by himself. Additionally, his job required long hours, repetitive movements, and high exertion despite his lean build. Using anthropometric analysis, a Body Discomfort Survey, and workload assessments, it was found that most of the tasks S. was required to perform were too anthropometrically challenging …

Galactic Cosmic Radiation And Microgravity-Induced Changes Of Murine T Cell [email protected], Astrid Senko, Graema Grainger, Angela Cebula

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Astronauts on long-duration space missions are exposed to significant environmental stressors, including microgravity and various forms of ionizing radiation. These stressors can cause physiological and cellular adaptations which can lead to significant implications on immune function. Understanding how these spaceflight conditions alter immune response is essential, particularly in the context of immune cell structure and function. This study examines whether spaceflight stressors alter T cell phenotypes in mice which can result in disrupted immune homeostasis, resulting in the potential for increased susceptibility to infections and persistent inflammation. To simulate spaceflight conditions, male and female, 24-week old, C57BL/6J mice were exposed …

Mitigation Of Virtual Reality Induced Cybersickness, Louis Pandolfo, Hannah Lyons

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Virtual reality (VR) offers valuable training opportunities in different industries, but its widespread use is limited by cybersickness, characterized by nausea, dizziness, and disorientation. Although there is research on the causes of cybersickness, how people adapt to it is not well understood. This study looks at whether repeated exposure to a VR-based optokinetic nystagmus (OKN-VR) system reduces symptoms and if this adaptation carries over to other VR environments. Forty healthy adults (18+) will have five days of 20-minute VR sessions (or until discomfort starts). Participants will be randomly assigned to experience either OKN-VR first, followed by a VR roller coaster …

Pa 146: What Is Clear, What Is Fuzzy, And What Should We Do Next?, Jenelle Williams, Nicole Peterson

Michigan Reading Journal

Michigan’s Public Act 146 (PA 146), the state’s K–12 Literacy and Dyslexia Law, establishes new requirements for screening, evidence-based instruction, structured literacy practices, professional learning, and strengthened multi-tiered systems of support to improve reading outcomes. While the law provides detailed and prescriptive guidance for elementary schools—particularly regarding decoding-focused instruction aligned to the science of reading, universal screening, and intervention planning—its implications for grades 4–12 are less clearly defined. This article examines what is explicit in the legislation, what remains open to interpretation in secondary contexts, and how districts can move forward strategically as they prepare for full implementation by 2027–2028. …

Coaching For The Whole Teacher: 10 Humanistic Practices For Reflective And Relational Literacy Coaching, Emily Caylor May 2026

Coaching For The Whole Teacher: 10 Humanistic Practices For Reflective And Relational Literacy Coaching, Emily Caylor

Michigan Reading Journal

At a time when teacher professional learning often emphasizes compliance and efficiency, literacy coaching can serve as a humanizing counterbalance that centers teachers’ identities and professional agency. This article draws from a yearlong coaching partnership between a literacy coach and an experienced elementary teacher to illustrate how reflection, relational trust, and dialogic interaction cultivate teachers’ intrapersonal awareness and willingness to change. Grounded in Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs as a foundational layer of psychological safety and Korthagen’s (2004) onion model as a framework for identity-centered reflection, this work positions coaching as a relational, dialogic, and context-sensitive process. The article translates …

Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Peers As Audience, Christina N. Lorelli May 2026

Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Peers As Audience, Christina N. Lorelli

Michigan Reading Journal

Abstract

This pilot study, grounded in sociocultural theory, humanizing pedagogy, and dialogic theory, examines how fourth-grade students perceive their peers as their primary audience. It explores how writing becomes a social and relational act that enhances purpose, voice, and identity. As a teacher-researcher in a rural Pennsylvania district, I collaborated with other teachers to build a community of writers as students shared, discussed, and received feedback on their work. Responsive surveys with students revealed key themes: 1. Sharing writing with peers boosts student motivation and involvement; 2. their writing becomes more meaningful, fostering a sense of ownership; and 3. quality …

Mindfulness Practices In The School Setting: Research, Strategies, And Student Voices, Katie Lewis May 2026

Mindfulness Practices In The School Setting: Research, Strategies, And Student Voices, Katie Lewis

Michigan Reading Journal

This article explores the role of mindfulness practices in elementary school settings, drawing from current research, practical classroom strategies, and student reflections from a school-based mindfulness yoga pilot. While children enter school with an innate capacity for presence, the structure and demands of formal education can unintentionally diminish their natural ability to regulate attention and emotion. Grounded in research connecting mindfulness to improvements in executive functioning, including working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and sustained attention, this article argues that intentionally teaching mindfulness can strengthen both behavioral and academic outcomes.

A review of empirical studies highlights correlations between mindfulness-based interventions …

From Talk To Science Literacy: Using Structured Student Talk To Support Newcomer Multilingual Learners In High School, Matthew W. De Boer, Rui Niu-Cooper May 2026

From Talk To Science Literacy: Using Structured Student Talk To Support Newcomer Multilingual Learners In High School, Matthew W. De Boer, Rui Niu-Cooper

Michigan Reading Journal

Newcomer multilingual learners (MLs) often experience significant barriers to oral participation in secondary classrooms, despite the central role of talk in language development, academic learning, and community belonging. Research indicates that while comprehension skills may continue to develop, opportunities for structured oral expression are frequently limited, particularly in teacher-led instructional settings. This article examines how intentional Structured Student Talk (SST) routines can support newcomer MLs in transitioning from classroom silence to meaningful participation. Drawing on interactionist theories of language development, cognitive load theory, and affective filter research, the article argues that oral language must be explicitly scaffolded within content instruction …

Real-Time Context Engine For Dynamic Content Generation And Interface Adaptation, Tim Whalin, Otty Soemitro May 2026

Real-Time Context Engine For Dynamic Content Generation And Interface Adaptation, Tim Whalin, Otty Soemitro

Defensive Publications Series

A Real-Time Context Engine (RTCE) dynamically generates and adapts conversational content based on a user’s interactions with a webpage. The RTCE monitors client-side telemetry, such as scroll velocity and cursor position, and feeds these behavioral signals into a large language model (LLM) that functions as a real-time semantic orchestrator. For sponsored items, the system generates both an impartial “Objective Explainer” and a distinct “Advertiser Voice” through dual-voice orchestration, synchronizing them with the user’s expectations to maintain transparency. The technology also performs predictive mode-shifting by analyzing micro-interactions to infer shifts in user intent, automatically altering the user interface from one modality …

Further, this study synthesizes these findings into a set of principles for constructing a formative assessment instrument fostering media literacy competence. Seventeen publications from the last 15 years were selected through a systematic search in scientific databases. All studies were categorized concerning crucial characteristics of assessment instruments. Furthermore, the synthesis of this study …

Intent Gravity Engines, Johny Manuel-Devadoss, Joanna Johnson, Jayden Jack Johnson May 2026

Intent Gravity Engines, Johny Manuel-Devadoss, Joanna Johnson, Jayden Jack Johnson

Defensive Publications Series

Contemporary recommendation architectures optimize short-horizon behavioral objectives such as click-through rate, retention, conversion probability, watch-time maximization, and engagement persistence. While these systems achieve high efficiency in immediate interaction optimization, they systematically fail to model longitudinal human development, identity continuity, aspiration stabilization, and temporally coherent cognitive evolution. Existing recommender systems operate under an implicit assumption that preferences are stationary or slowly drifting latent variables inferable from interaction sequences. This assumption becomes increasingly invalid in high-dimensional socio-cognitive environments where users are not static consumers but dynamically evolving agents whose identities emerge through recursive interactions between cognition, social exposure, emotional state transitions, epistemic …

Neurotypical English speakers (20 male and 20 female) were recruited to listen to a series of conversational speech samples collected from a group of eight autistic adults (four male and four female). In each sample, autistic individuals responded to a series of everyday …

In The Wake Of Sound: On Field Recording, Materiality, And Reparative Listening, Ivy Fu May 2026

In The Wake Of Sound: On Field Recording, Materiality, And Reparative Listening, Ivy Fu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis develops a practice of field recording, spatial audio composition, and soft-circuit installation grounded in what I call reparative listening: a slow, materially attentive form of attention oriented toward what dominant recording apparatuses suppress, discard, or fail to register. Across five major projects—Fable Upon Ununified Grounds (2023), Cocoon (2024), Tether (2025), Hide & Seek (2026), and Frequency Commons (2026)—I treat sound not as an extractable output but as a relational event shaped by site, body, material, and signal loss. The work draws together Jane Bennett's vibrant materialism, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's theory of definitional crisis and the open secret, Zhuangzi's …

Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy May 2026

Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

TikTok is a short-form video platform where users create and share content that is often centered around humor, trends, and everyday social experiences. In face-to-face interactions, people typically rely on immediate feedback to navigate conversations, often using approval seeking behaviors to gain positive reactions and rejection-avoidant behaviors to reduce the risk of negative judgement. While these motivations are well-established in in-person settings, less is known about how they function in digital environments like TikTok, where teens privately share humorous content without immediate social cues to guide their interactions. My general hypothesis was that both rejection avoidance and approval-seeking behaviors will …
