Analysis Of Adiabatic Trapping For Quasi-Integrable Area-Preserving Maps, Armando Bazzani, Christopher Frye, Massimo Giovannozzi, Cédric Hernalsteens
Analysis Of Adiabatic Trapping For Quasi-Integrable Area-Preserving Maps, Armando Bazzani, Christopher Frye, Massimo Giovannozzi, Cédric Hernalsteens
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Trapping phenomena involving nonlinear resonances have been considered in the past in the framework of adiabatic theory. Several results are known for continuous-time dynamical systems generated by Hamiltonian flows in which the combined effect of nonlinear resonances and slow time variation of some system parameters is considered. The focus of this paper is on discrete-time dynamical systems generated by two-dimensional symplectic maps. The possibility of extending the results of neo-adiabatic theory to quasi-integrable area-preserving maps is discussed. Scaling laws are derived, which describe the adiabatic transport as a function of the system parameters using a probabilistic point of view. These …
Lakes And Rivers As Microcosms, Version 2.0, David G. Jenkins
Lakes And Rivers As Microcosms, Version 2.0, David G. Jenkins
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Limnology has been greatly influenced by The lake as a Microcosm (Forbes, 1887), which described a holistic focus on the internal machinations of singular, island-like aquatic ecosystems. I consider three persistent influences of The lake as a Microcosm: as an organizing paradigm for the teaching of limnology relative to its practice; the idea that inland waters are like islands, and the replicability of types of inland waters. Based on inspection of recent peer-reviewed literature and 32 limnology texts, we teach limnology according to Forbes but do not practice it in that holistic context. Instead, we practice limnology as aquatic ecology. …
Optical Isolation Via Pt-Symmetric Nonlinear Fano Resonances, F. Nazari, N. Bender, H. Ramezani, M. K. Moravvej-Farshi, D. N. Christodoulides, T. Kottos
Optical Isolation Via Pt-Symmetric Nonlinear Fano Resonances, F. Nazari, N. Bender, H. Ramezani, M. K. Moravvej-Farshi, D. N. Christodoulides, T. Kottos
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We show that Fano resonances created by two PT-symmetric nonlinear micro-resonators coupled to a waveguide, have line-shape and resonance position that depends on the direction of the incident light. We utilize these features in order to induce asymmetric transport, up to 47 dBs, in the optical C-window. Our theoretical proposal requires low input power and does not compromise the power or frequency characteristics of the output signal.

Propagation And Perfect Transmission In Three-Waveguide Axially Varying Couplers, B. M. Rodríguez-Lara, H. M. Moya-Cessa, D. N. Christodoulides
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We study a class of three-waveguide axially varying structures whose dynamics are described by the su(3) algebra. Their analytic propagator can be found based on the corresponding Lie group generators. In particular, we show that the field propagator corresponding to three-waveguide structures that have arbitrarily varying coupling coefficients and identical refractive indices is associated with the orbital angular momentum algebra. The conditions necessary to achieve perfect transmission from the first to the last waveguide element are obtained and particular cases are elucidated analytically.
Continuous And Discrete Schrodinger Systems With Parity-Time-Symmetric Nonlinearities, Amarendra K. Sarma, Mohammad-Ali Miri, Ziad H. Musslimani, Demetrios N. Christodoulides
Continuous And Discrete Schrodinger Systems With Parity-Time-Symmetric Nonlinearities, Amarendra K. Sarma, Mohammad-Ali Miri, Ziad H. Musslimani, Demetrios N. Christodoulides
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We investigate the dynamical behavior of continuous and discrete Schrodinger systems exhibiting parity-time (PT) invariant nonlinearities. We show that such equations behave in a fundamentally different fashion than their nonlinear Schrodinger counterparts. In particular, the PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equation can simultaneously support both bright and dark soliton solutions. In addition, we study a discretized version of this PT-nonlinear Schrodinger equation on a lattice. When only two elements are involved, by obtaining the underlying invariants, we show that this system is fully integrable and we identify the PT-symmetry-breaking conditions. This arrangement is unique in the sense that the exceptional points are …
In Situ Disdrometer Calibration Using Multiple Dsd Moments, John E. Lane, Takis Kasparis, Philip T. Metzger, W. Linwood Jones
In Situ Disdrometer Calibration Using Multiple Dsd Moments, John E. Lane, Takis Kasparis, Philip T. Metzger, W. Linwood Jones
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
In situ calibration is a proposed strategy for continuous as well as initial calibration of an impact disdrometer. In previous work, a collocated tipping bucket had been utilized to provide a rainfall rate based similar to 11/3 moment reference to an impact disdrometer's signal processing system for implementation of adaptive calibration. Using rainfall rate only, transformation of impulse amplitude to a drop volume based on a simple power law was used to define an error surface in the model's parameter space. By incorporating optical extinction second moment measurements with rainfall rate data, an improved in situ disdrometer calibration algorithm results …

A Case Study Of The Self-Efficacy Of High School Aged Underrepresented Minority Women Entering The Medical Pipeline, Jennifer Dames
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the self-efficacy and experiences described by a purposively sampled case (n = 8) of high school-aged underrepresented minority women (URMW) as they entered the medical career pipeline through their participation in a formal medical pipeline program. The study was framed by three theories: intersectionality, positionality, and self-efficacy. Research questions were analyzed qualitatively, using case study methods, and quantitatively, using a paired sample t-test. Study data revealed that participants came into the program with high levels of self-efficacy in several self-efficacy factors. Yet, participants in the pipeline program made significant improvements in their self-assertive efficacy. Analysis of …
A Quantitative Study Of The Relationship Between Pell Grant Aid And Associated Variables In A Florida Public State College, Lynn Powers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using Bean and Metzner's conceptual framework related to non-traditional student attrition, the responsible use of Federal Pell Grants was studied by examining the retention and academic performance of college-credit seeking students in a public college in Florida that predominantly offered two year degree programs. Also analyzed were differences between Pell Grant recipients and non-recipients among various demographic categories. Chi-square tests of independence indicated that statistical significance existed between Pell Grant recipients and non-recipients in retention rates from fall to spring terms, as well as in the demographic variables of academic performance, gender, ethnicity, age group, residency, and credit hours achieved. …
Comprehension Of Science Text By African American Fifth And Sixth Grade Students: The Effects Of A Metalinguistic Approach, Karen Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Scientific literacy has been at the forefront of science education reform for the past 20 years, particularly for students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds (Lee et. al., 2005; Pearson, Moje & Greenleaf, 2010). The ability to extract meaning from text is an important skill. Yet many students struggle with effectively comprehending what they read, particularly in content areas of science, math and history. According to the National Assessment Educational Progress (NAEP, 2013) report, adolescents are not acquiring advanced literacy skills needed to succeed in the workplace and academic setting. Literacy experts have called for the use of disciplinary …

A Phenomenological Analysis Of Undergraduate Teaching In The United States And The United Kingdom From The Perspective Of Current And Former Exchange Students, Barry Griffiths
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While once almost indistinguishable, the systems of higher education in the United States and the United Kingdom have diverged during the past 200 years to the point where today there are few similarities. However, due to increasing globalization and the growing ubiquity of the internet, many contemporary issues in higher education are often faced by institutions across the globe. After detailing the historical role of scholarship and teaching in the two countries, this study concentrates on two aspects that have been extensively researched in recent years, namely the role of technology in the classroom and the balance that many modern …
Placement Of Mode And Wavelength Converters For Throughput Enhancement In Optical Networks, Ruaa Abdulrahman
Placement Of Mode And Wavelength Converters For Throughput Enhancement In Optical Networks, Ruaa Abdulrahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The success of recent experiments to transport data using combined wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) and mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission has generated optimism for the attainment of optical networks with unprecedented bandwidth capacity, exceeding the fundamental Shannon capacity limit attained by WDM alone. Optical mode converters and wavelength converters are devices that can be placed in future optical nodes (routers) to prevent or reduce the connection blocking rate and consequently increase network throughput. In this thesis, the specific problem of the placement of mode converters (MC) and mode-wavelength converters (MWC) in combined mode and wavelength division multiplexing (MWDM) networks is investigated. …
Terahertz And Sub-Terahertz Tunable Resonant Detectors Based On Excitation Of Two Dimensional Plasmons In Ingaas/Inp Hemts, Esfahani, Nima Nader
Terahertz And Sub-Terahertz Tunable Resonant Detectors Based On Excitation Of Two Dimensional Plasmons In Ingaas/Inp Hemts, Esfahani, Nima Nader
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plasmons can be generated in the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) of grating-gated high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). The grating-gate serves dual purposes, namely to provide the required wavevector to compensate for the momentum mismatch between the free-space radiation and 2D-plasmons, and to tune the 2DEG sheet charge density. Since the plasmon frequency at a given wavevector depends on the sheet charge density, a gate bias can shift the plasmon resonance. In some cases, plasmon generation results in a resonant change in channel conductance which allows a properly designed grating-gated HEMT to be used as a voltage-tunable resonant detector or …
Treatment-Specific Approaches For Analysis And Control Of Left Ventricular Assist Devices, George Faragallah
Treatment-Specific Approaches For Analysis And Control Of Left Ventricular Assist Devices, George Faragallah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that helps patients with heart failure conditions. This rotary pump works in parallel to the ailing heart and provides an alternative path for blood flow from the weak left ventricle to the aorta. The LVAD is controlled by the power supplied to the pump motor. An increase in the pump motor power increases the pump speed and the pump flow. The LVAD is typically controlled at a fixed setting of pump power. This basically means that the controller does not react to any change in the activity level of the …
Multifunctional, Multimaterial Particle Fabrication Via An In-Fiber Fluid Instability, Joshua Kaufman
Multifunctional, Multimaterial Particle Fabrication Via An In-Fiber Fluid Instability, Joshua Kaufman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spherical micro- and nano-particles have found widespread use in many various applications from paint to cosmetics to medicine. Due to the multiplicity of desired particle material(s), structure, size range, and functionality, many approaches exist for generating such particles. Bottom-up methods such as chemical synthesis have a high yield and work with a wide range of materials; however, these processes typically lead to large polydispersity and cannot produce structured particles. Top-down approaches such as microfluidics overcome the polydispersity issue and may produce a few different structures in particles, but at lower rates and only at the micro-scale. A method that can …

Functional Scaffolding For Musical Composition: A New Approach In Computer-Assisted Music Composition, Amy K. Hoover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While it is important for systems intended to enhance musical creativity to define and explore musical ideas conceived by individual users, many limit musical freedom by focusing on maintaining musical structure, thereby impeding the user's freedom to explore his or her individual style. This dissertation presents a comprehensive body of work that introduces a new musical representation that allows users to explore a space of musical rules that are created from their own melodies. This representation, called functional scaffolding for musical composition (FSMC), exploits a simple yet powerful property of multipart compositions: The pattern of notes and rhythms in different …

Decentralized Power Management In Microgrids, Amit Bhattacharjee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A large number of power sources, operational in a microgrid, optimum power sharing and accordingly controlling the power sources along with scheduling loads are the biggest challenges in modern power system. In the era of smart grid, the solution is certainly not simple paralleling. Hence it is required to develop a control scheme that delivers the overall power requirements while also adhering to the power limitations of each source. As the penetration of distributed generators increase and are diversifi ed, the choice of decentralized control becomes preferable. In this work, a decentralized control framework is conceived. The primary approach is …

Optically Induced Forces In Scanning Probe Microscopy, Dana C. Kohlgraf-Owens, Sergey Sukhov, Léo Greusard, Yannick De Wilde, Aristide Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Typical measurements of light in the near-field utilize a photodetector such as a photomultiplier tube or a photodiode, which is placed remotely from the region under test. This kind of detection has many draw-backs including the necessity to detect light in the far-field, the influence of background propagating radiation, the relatively narrowband operation of photodetectors which complicates the operation over a wide wavelength range, and the difficulty in detecting radiation in the far-IR and THz. Here we review an alternative near-field light measurement technique based on the detection of optically induced forces acting on the scanning probe. This type of …

This article examines the effectiveness of an IVH simulation for teaching medical students to assess rare cranial nerve abnormalities in both individual and small-group learning contexts. Individual (n = 26) and small-group (n = 30) interaction with the IVH system was manipulated to examine the influence on learning, learner engagement, perceived cognitive demands of the learning task, and instructional efficiency. Results suggested the IVH activity was an equally effective and engaging instructional tool in both learning structures, despite learners in the group learning contexts having …
A New Framework For Resolving Conflicts Over Transboundary Rivers Using Bankruptcy Methods, K. Madani, M. Zarezadeh, S. Morid
A New Framework For Resolving Conflicts Over Transboundary Rivers Using Bankruptcy Methods, K. Madani, M. Zarezadeh, S. Morid
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
A novel bankruptcy approach is proposed for resolving transboundary river conflicts in which the total water demand or claim of the riparian parties is more than the available water. Bankruptcy solution methods can allocate the available water to the conflicting parties with respect to their claims. Four commonly used bankruptcy methods in the economic literature are used here to develop new river bankruptcy solution methods for allocating water to the riparian parties of river systems. Given the non-uniform spatial and temporal distribution of water across river basins, the proposed solution methods are formulated as non-linear network flow optimization models to …
Stationary Solutions For The 1+1 Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation Modeling Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates In Small Potentials, Kristina Mallory, Robert A. Van Gorder
Stationary Solutions For The 1+1 Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation Modeling Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates In Small Potentials, Kristina Mallory, Robert A. Van Gorder
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Stationary solutions for the 1 + 1 cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) modeling attractive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a small potential are obtained via a form of nonlinear perturbation. The focus here is on perturbations to the bright soliton solutions due to small potentials which either confine or repel the BECs: under arbitrary piecewise continuous potentials, we obtain the general representation for the perturbation theory of the bright solitons. Importantly, we do not need to assume that the nonlinearity is small, as we perform a sort of nonlinear perturbation by allowing the zeroth-order perturbation term to be governed by a …

Stationary Solutions For The 2+1 Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation Modeling Bose-Einstein Condensates In Radial Potentials, Kristina Mallory, Robert A. Van Gorder
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Stationary solutions for the 2 + 1 cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation modeling Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a small potential are obtained via a form of perturbation. In particular, perturbations due to small potentials which either confine or repel the BECs are studied, and under arbitrary piecewise continuous potentials, we obtain the general representation for the perturbation theory of radial BEC solutions. Numerical results are also provided for regimes where perturbative results break down (i.e., the large-potential regime). Both repulsive and attractive BECs are considered under this framework. Solutions for many specific confining potentials of physical relevance to experiments on BECs …

Moire Volume Bragg Grating Filter With Tunable Bandwidth, Sergiy Mokhov, University Of Central Florida, Ivan Divliansky, Boris Zeldovich, Leonid Glebov
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We propose a monolithic large-aperture narrowband optical filter based on a moire volume Bragg grating formed by two sequentially recorded gratings with slightly different resonant wavelengths. Such recording creates a spatial modulation of refractive index with a slowly varying sinusoidal envelope. By cutting a specimen at a small angle, to a thickness of one-period of this envelope, the longitudinal envelope profile will shift from a sine profile to a cosine profile across the face of the device. The transmission peak of the filter has a tunable bandwidth while remaining at a fixed resonant wavelength by a transversal shift of incidence …

A Squeeze-Like Operator Approach To Position-Dependent Mass In Quantum Mechanics, Héctor M. Moya-Cessa, Francisco Soto-Eguibar, Demetrios N. Christodoulides
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We provide a squeeze-like transformation that allows one to remove a position dependent mass from the Hamiltonian. Methods to solve the Schrodinger equation may then be applied to find the respective eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. As an example, we consider a position-dependent-mass that leads to the integrable Morse potential and therefore to well-known solutions.
