Successful Organizational Change: Aligning Change Type With Methods, Serina Al-Haddad
Successful Organizational Change: Aligning Change Type With Methods, Serina Al-Haddad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The motivation behind this research is the prevalence of challenges and ambiguity associated with successful organizational change and the numerous available approaches in dealing with these challenges and ambiguity. Many definitions and methods have been suggested to manage change; however, organizations still report a high failure rate of their change initiatives. These high failure rates highlight the continuing need for research and investigation, and imply a lack of a valid framework for managing successful organizational change. This dissertation critically reviews the concept of having one change approach as the “silver-bullet”. In pursuit of this goal, this research contributes a roadmap …
Identifying Influential Agents In Social Systems, Mahsa Maghami
Identifying Influential Agents In Social Systems, Mahsa Maghami
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the problem of influence maximization in social networks. In- fluence maximization is applicable to many types of real-world problems, including modeling contagion, technology adoption, and viral marketing. Here we examine an advertisement domain in which the overarching goal is to find the influential nodes in a social network, based on the network structure and the interactions, as targets of advertisement. The assumption is that advertisement budget limits prevent us from sending the advertisement to everybody in the network. Therefore, a wise selection of the people can be beneficial in increasing the product adoption. To model these social …

A Study Of Compressive Sensing For Application To Structural Health Monitoring, Vaahini Ganesan
A Study Of Compressive Sensing For Application To Structural Health Monitoring, Vaahini Ganesan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the key areas that have attracted attention in the construction industry today is Structural Health Monitoring, more commonly known as SHM. It is a concept developed to monitor the quality and longevity of various engineering structures. The incorporation of such a system would help to continuously track health of the structure, indicate the occurrence/presence of any damage in real time and give us an idea of the number of useful years for the same. Being a recently conceived idea, the state of the art technique in the field is straight forward - populating a given structure with sensors …
Inventory Management Problem For Cold Items With Environmental And Financial Considerations, Ali Hajiaghabozorgi
Inventory Management Problem For Cold Items With Environmental And Financial Considerations, Ali Hajiaghabozorgi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overarching theme of this dissertation is analytically analyzing the cold supply chain from a financial and environmental perspective. Specifically, we develop inventory policy models in the cold supply chain that consider holding and transportation unit capacities. The models provide insights for the decision maker on the tradeoff between setting order quantities based on the cost or the emission function. In Chapter 2, we review two major bodies of literature: 1) supply chain design, and 2) sustainability in supply chain design. We benefit from this literature review to map the current body of research on traditional supply chain for further …
Intelligent Selection Techniques For Virtual Environments, Jeffrey Cashion
Intelligent Selection Techniques For Virtual Environments, Jeffrey Cashion
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selection in 3D games and simulations is a well-studied problem. Many techniques have been created to address many of the typical scenarios a user could experience. For any single scenario with consistent conditions, there is likely a technique which is well suited. If there isn't, then there is an opportunity for one to be created to best suit the expected conditions of that new scenario. It is critical that the user be given an appropriate technique to interact with their environment. Without it, the entire experience is at risk of becoming burdensome and not enjoyable. With all of the different …
Integrated Remote Sensing And Forecasting Of Regional Terrestrial Precipitation With Global Nonlinear And Nonstationary Teleconnection Signals Using Wavelet Analysis, Lee Mullon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies have a demonstrable effect on terrestrial climate dynamics throughout the continental U.S. SST variations have been correlated with greenness (vegetation densities) and precipitation via ocean-atmospheric interactions known as climate teleconnections. Prior research has demonstrated that teleconnections can be used for climate prediction across a wide region at sub-continental scales. Yet these studies tend to have large uncertainties in estimates by utilizing simple linear analyses to examine chaotic teleconnection relationships. Still, non-stationary signals exist, making teleconnection identification difficult at the local scale. Part 1 of this research establishes short-term (10-year), linear and non-stationary teleconnection signals …
Investigation Of Dual-Stage High Efficiency And Density Micro Inverter For Solar Application, Lin Chen
Investigation Of Dual-Stage High Efficiency And Density Micro Inverter For Solar Application, Lin Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Module integrated converters (MIC), also called micro inverter, in single phase have witnessed recent market success due to unique features (1) improved energy harvest, (2) improved system efficiency, (3) lower installation costs, (4) plug-N-play operation, (5) and enhanced flexibility and modularity. The MIC sector has grown from a niche market to mainstream, especially in the United States. Due to the fact that two-stage architecture is commonly used for single phase MIC application. A DC-DC stage with maximum power point tracking to boost the output voltage of the Photovoltaic (PV) panel is employed in the first stage, DC-AC stage is used …
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Complex optical pulse shapes are typically generated from ultrashort laser pulses by manipulating the optical spectrum of the input pulses. This generates complex but periodic time-domain waveforms. Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation (OAWG) builds on the techniques of ultrashort pulse-shaping, with the goal of making non-periodic, truly arbitrary optical waveforms. Some applications of OAWG are coherently controlling chemical reactions on a femtosecond time scale, improving the performance of LADAR systems, high-capacity optical telecommunications and ultra wideband signals processing. In this work, an array of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are used as modulators, by injection-locking each VCSEL to an individual …
Recollections: An Internal Analysis Of Memory And Perception, Samuel Jimenez
Recollections: An Internal Analysis Of Memory And Perception, Samuel Jimenez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I investigate the depths of memory, the entanglement of personal recollections with communal knowledge (learned semantic information from media and society such as facts and social norms) and the changing perceptions of environments over time. Memories define us. Throughout life we are exposed to vast quantities of imagery through a variety of media and personal experiences. Over time our firsthand experiences and what we witness in film, print, photography, and the internet become indistinguishable in our memory. My work recreates consequential scenes from my past through technical drawings and blended imagery while exploring the possibilities provided by the interaction of …
An Uncooled Mid-Wave Infrared Detector Based On Optical Response Of Laser-Doped Silicon Carbide., Geunsik Lim
An Uncooled Mid-Wave Infrared Detector Based On Optical Response Of Laser-Doped Silicon Carbide., Geunsik Lim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on an uncooled Mid-Wave Infra-Red (MWIR) detector was developed by doping an n-type 4H-SiC with Ga using the laser doping technique. 4H-SiC is one of the polytypes of crystalline silicon carbide, a wide bandgap semiconductor. The dopant creates an energy level of 0.30 eV, which was confirmed by optical spectroscopy of the doped sample. This energy level corresponds to the MWIR wavelength of 4.21 µm. The detection mechanism is based on the photoexcitation of electrons by the photons of this wavelength absorbed in the semiconductor. This process modifies the electron density, which changes the refraction index and, …
Pen-Based Methods For Recognition And Animation Of Handwritten Physics Solutions, Salman Cheema
Pen-Based Methods For Recognition And Animation Of Handwritten Physics Solutions, Salman Cheema
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has been considerable interest in constructing pen-based intelligent tutoring systems due to the natural interaction metaphor and low cognitive load afforded by pen-based interaction. We believe that pen-based intelligent tutoring systems can be further enhanced by integrating animation techniques. In this work, we explore methods for recognizing and animating sketched physics diagrams. Our methodologies enable an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to understand the scenario and requirements posed by a given problem statement and to couple this knowledge with a computational model of the student's handwritten solution. These pieces of information are used to construct meaningful animations and feedback mechanisms …
An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab
An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Early identification and detection of abnormal time series patterns is vital for a number of manufacturing. Slide shifts and alterations of time series patterns might be indicative of some anomaly in the production process, such as machinery malfunction. Usually due to the continuous flow of data monitoring of manufacturing processes requires automated Control Chart Pattern Recognition(CCPR) algorithms. The majority of CCPR literature consists of supervised classification algorithms. Less studies consider unsupervised versions of the problem. Despite the profound advantage of unsupervised methodology for less manual data labeling their use is limited due to the fact that their performance is not …
Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey
Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is getting a lot of attention mainly for two reasons. First, it is one of the most commonly found childhood behavioral disorders. Around 5-10% of the children all over the world are diagnosed with ADHD. Second, the root cause of the problem is still unknown and therefore no biological measure exists to diagnose ADHD. Instead, doctors need to diagnose it based on the clinical symptoms, such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, which are all subjective. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has become a popular tool to understand the functioning of the brain such …

Nano-Pipette As Nanoparticle Analyzer And Capillary Gated Ion Transistor, Yauheni Rudzevich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to precisely count inorganic and organic nanoparticles and to measure their size distribution plays a major role in various applications such as drug delivery, nanoparticles counting, and many others. In this work I present a simple resistive pulse method that allows translocations, counting, and measuring the size and velocity distribution of silica nanoparticles and liposomes with diameters from 50 nm to 250 nm. This technique is based on the Coulter counter technique, but has nanometer size pores. It was found that ionic current drops when nanoparticles enter the nanopore of a pulled micropipette, producing a clear translocation signal. …
Photoactivatable Organic And Inorganic Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Biosensing, Mona Mathew
Photoactivatable Organic And Inorganic Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Biosensing, Mona Mathew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In photodynamic therapy a photosensitizer drug is administered and is irradiated with light. Upon absorption of light the photosensitizer goes into its triplet state and transfers energy or an electron to oxygen to form reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS react with biomolecules in cells leading to cell damage and cell death. PDT has interested many researchers because of its non-invasiveness as compared to surgery, it leaves little to no scars, it is time and cost effective, it has potential for targeted treatment, and can be repeated as needed. Different photosensitizers such as porphyrines, chlorophylls, and dyes have been used …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are exceptional ultra-high temperature and stable multifunctional class of materials that can be synthesized from a polymer precursor through thermal decomposition. The presented research focuses on 1-D nanofibers, 2-D films and 3-D bulk, carbon-rich silicon carbon nitride (SiCN) ceramics. 1-D nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning for light weight, flame retardant and conductive applications. The commercially available CerasetTM VL20, a liquid cyclosilazane pre-ceramic precursor, was mixed with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in order to make the cyclosilazane electrospinnable. Carbon-rich PDC nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning various ratios of PAN/cyclosilazane solutions followed by pyrolysis. Surface morphology of the electro spun nanofibers …
Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel
Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) were originally developed for electromagnetic filtering applications at microwave frequencies. Electron-beam lithography has enabled the extension of FSS to infrared frequencies; however, these techniques create sample sizes that are seldom appropriate for real world applications due to the size and rigidity of the substrate. A new method of fabricating large area conformal infrared FSS is introduced, which involves releasing miniature FSS arrays from a substrate for implementation in a coating. A selective etching process is proposed and executed to create FSS particles from crossed-dipole and square-loop FSS arrays. When the fill-factor of the particles in the …

The State Of The Anti-Union Address: A Rhetorical Critique Of Select Service Worker Training Methods, Richard Ries
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is an interdisciplinary master's level thesis that explores links among technical writing, training manuals, surveillance, and anti-union rhetoric used with service workers in select American chains and franchises. Brief histories are provided, including those of technical writing, the rise of unions in America, and how technical writing became inextricably linked with labor. A major shift occurred in the 20th century when workers began interacting less with products and more with the public. The research focuses on training manuals, techniques, and rehearsed dialogues of McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Whole Foods, Panera, and Publix, though similar organizations are referenced. Service worker language, …

Hexavalent chromium is an extremely carcinogenic chemical that has been widely produced in the United States. This has led to major waste contamination and pollution throughout the country. According to the Environmental Working Group Hexavalent chromium has been found in 89% of city tap water. Most people believe they are safe using regular home filter systems however that is not true. A more expensive ion exchange water treatment unit is required. Therefore to protect yourselves from this carcinogenic metal a reliable test is required. In this study we have developed a Zinc Sulfide Manganese doped Quantum Rod technology to detect …

Multiple myeloma, the second most common hematological cancer, is currently incurable due to refractory disease relapse and development of multiple drug resistance. We and others recently established the biophysical model that myeloma initiating (stem) cells (MICs) trigger the stiffening of their niches via SDF-1/CXCR4 paracrine; The stiffened niches then promote the colonogenesis of MICs and protect them from drug treatment. In this work we examined in silico the pharmaceutical potential of targeting MIC niche stiffness to facilitate cytotoxic chemotherapies. We first established a multi-scale agent-based model using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to recapitulate the niche stiffness centric, pro-oncogenetic …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We introduce a recursive bosonic quantization technique for generating classical parity-time (PT) photonic structures that possess hidden symmetries and higher-order exceptional points. We study light transport in these geometries and we demonstrate that perfect state transfer is possible only for certain initial conditions. Moreover, we show that for the same propagation direction, left and right coherent transports are not symmetric with field amplitudes following two different trajectories. A general scheme for identifying the conservation laws in such PT-symmetric photonic networks is also presented.
Computing Semi-Commuting Differential Operators In One And Multiple Variables, Robert A. Van Gorder
Computing Semi-Commuting Differential Operators In One And Multiple Variables, Robert A. Van Gorder
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We discuss the concept of what we refer to as semi-commuting linear differential operators. Such operators hold commuting operators as a special case. In particular, we discuss a heuristic by which one may construct such operators. Restricting to the case in which one such operator is of degree two, we construct families of linear differential operators semi-commuting with some named operators governing special functions (with a focus on the hypergeometric case, as it holds many other cases as reductions); operators commuting with such special degree two operators will necessarily be contained in these families. In the partial differential operator case, …

Seismic Modeling By Optimizing Regularized Staggered-Grid Finite-Difference Operators Using A Time-Space-Domain Dispersion-Relationship-Preserving Method, Yanfei Wang, Wenquan Liang, Zuhair Nashed, Xiao Li, Guanghe Liang, Changchun Yang
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
The staggered-grid finite-difference (FD) method is widely used in numerical simulation of the wave equation. With stability conditions, grid dispersion often exists because of the discretization of the time and the spatial derivatives in the wave equation. Therefore, suppressing grid dispersion is a key problem for the staggered-grid FD schemes. To reduce the grid dispersion, the traditional method uses high-order staggered-grid schemes in the space domain. However, the wave is propagated in the time and space domain simultaneously. Therefore, some researchers proposed to derive staggered-grid FD schemes based on the time-space domain dispersion relationship. However, such methods were restricted to …

Nonparametric Regression Estimation Based On Spatially Inhomogeneous Data: Minimax Global Convergence Rates And Adaptivity, Anestis Antoniadis, Marianna Pensky, Theofanis Sapatinas
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We consider the nonparametric regression estimation problem of recovering an unknown response function f on the basis of spatially inhomogeneous data when the design points follow a known density g with a finite number of well-separated zeros. In particular, we consider two different cases: when g has zeros of a polynomial order and when g has zeros of an exponential order. These two cases correspond to moderate and severe data losses, respectively. We obtain asymptotic (as the sample size increases) minimax lower bounds for the L-2-risk when f is assumed to belong to a Besov ball, and construct adaptive wavelet …
