An Analysis Of The Progress In Automation Of Manned Space-Craft Test And Checkout, John E. Malone Jan 1975

An Analysis Of The Progress In Automation Of Manned Space-Craft Test And Checkout, John E. Malone

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Manned Spacecraft Programs are the largest research and development tasks ever undertaken by the government or by private industry in the United States. Under the direction of the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) these programs have advanced from Project Mercury in the early 1960's through Gemini, Apollo, including Moon Landing, and Skylab Programs to the present day Space Shuttle Program. With the development of each new program, there comes a growing awareness of the ever increasing complexity of tasks relating to integrated preflight test and checkout. Data rates have grown from one (1) pulse amplitude modulated/frequency modulated (PAM/FM) link …

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen Jan 1975

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

Analysis Of Unstable-Resonator And Optical-Train Laser Alignment Systems By The Use Of Matrix Methods Of Gaussian Optics, Frederick H. White Jan 1975

Analysis Of Unstable-Resonator And Optical-Train Laser Alignment Systems By The Use Of Matrix Methods Of Gaussian Optics, Frederick H. White

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A high-power gas dynamic-laser example system is described, and its optical elements are represented in the ABCD-matrix formalism of Gaussian optics. Propagation of Gaussian beams, image formation, focusing, and steering by transverse refractive-index gradients are modeled with the ABCD matrix technique. The effects of small translations and rotations of optical elements are represented as matrices and vectors in the ABCD-matrix formalism, and are analyzed as component misalignments with single and multiple beam reflections. Example calculations show that alignment beams making multiple round trips inside an unstable resonator can easily provide satisfactory resonator alignment and designation of the aim point of …

Plating Wastewater Management, Earl Kenneth Ossorio Jan 1975

Plating Wastewater Management, Earl Kenneth Ossorio

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of existing methods of management, treatment and disposal of water and wastewater effluents at a large aerospace facility (Martin Marietta Aerospace) in Central Florida. Water consumption and handling were evaluated, with emphasis being placed on the handling of plating wastes, since they are the main contributor of industrial wastewater pollutants at the facility. The flow, storage, and treatment of the plating wastes were studied. Literature concerning plating wastes was surveyed to determine the latest "state of the art" on handling of plating pollutants. Then, the "state of the art" processes were compared with the existing processes …

Development Of A Uhf Digital Frequency Synthesizer For Distance Measuring Equipment, Claude A. Sharpe Jan 1975

Development Of A Uhf Digital Frequency Synthesizer For Distance Measuring Equipment, Claude A. Sharpe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report summarizes the design of a digital frequency synthesizer for airborne distance measuring equipment. It is the purpose of the frequency synthesizer to provide a stable frequency source for the local oscillator of the airborne receiver and for the power amplifiers in the transmitter chain. The synthesizer is required to furnish a frequency ranging from 260.250 mHz to 287.50 mHz in channel steps of 250 kHz at a power level of +7.0 dBm. the stability of the frequency must be greater than .005% over the temperature range of from minus 45 degrees centigrade to plus 55 degrees centigrade, requiring …

A Comparison Of Corrosion Rates Determined By Polarization Resistance Measurements For Zinc And Cadmium Metal Immersed In Nonstirred Aqueous Portland Cement Solution, William James Moore Jan 1975

A Comparison Of Corrosion Rates Determined By Polarization Resistance Measurements For Zinc And Cadmium Metal Immersed In Nonstirred Aqueous Portland Cement Solution, William James Moore

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of nonstirred aqueous Portland cement solution on the corrosion rates of zinc and cadmium metal using Tafel extrapolation and linear polarization measurements has been investigated. Results indicate that for the corrosion systems under investigation, zinc metal has a higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion rate than cadmium metal.

Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry Jan 1975

Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Section I: Facultative and obligatory anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the ground water of a sanitary landfill characterized by sandy soil and a periodically high water table. Isolates were examined for 63 characteristics and subject to numerical analysis. Eight clusters were established and correlations with conventional taxonomy were made. The Bacteriodaceae were found to be the dominant group of organisms by the methods employed. The anaerobic population was observed to decrease as the period of seasonal rainfall ended. At the same time, gram positive anaerobes were largely replaced with gram negative ones. Leaching between sampling sites (wells) made correlations between …

Simulation Of A Spring Constrained Hypocyclic Roller Mechanism, Wayne R. Bomstad Jan 1975

Simulation Of A Spring Constrained Hypocyclic Roller Mechanism, Wayne R. Bomstad

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Hypocyclic mechanisms are the basic building blocks in the design of many widely used mechanical systems such as gear differentials, computing devices and other useful instruments. This paper presents a unique variation to the conventional hypocyclic system configuration in that the rotating elements are spring constrained instead of rigid arm constrained. A mathematical model was develop to simulate the operational characteristics of the mechanism. The model was coded in Fortran IV computer language and a simulation survey was conducted for a set of geometrical and system constraints. The results of this survey indicate that the mathematical model could be a …

Coaching And Performance On A Simulation Exercise, Charles Edward Michaels Jan 1975

Coaching And Performance On A Simulation Exercise, Charles Edward Michaels

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Selection of management personnel in industry is a difficult task, and one with important consequences. The job of the manager is composed of a multitude of skills and this tends to make evaluation or prediction of job performance more difficult (Odiorne and Miller, 1966). The consequences of poor selection decisions in management positions ray be costly for a company in increased turnover, reduced productivity or effectiveness, or in poor management decisions. One approach to the problem of management selection is the use of simulations of on-the-job situations. Exercises can be developed to provide a sample of typical work situations and …
