Understanding Gambling Behavior Among Hispanic College Students: The Role Of Attitudes, Norms, Self-Efficacy, And Acculturation, Joshua Torres May 2026

Understanding Gambling Behavior Among Hispanic College Students: The Role Of Attitudes, Norms, Self-Efficacy, And Acculturation, Joshua Torres

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Gambling has become increasingly accessible and socially normalized among young adults, particularly through mobile platforms and the expansion of legalized sports betting. Hispanic college students may be at heightened risk for gambling-related harms, given evidence of elevated rates of problem gambling, comorbid mental health concerns, and underrepresentation in empirical research. Cultural factors, such as acculturation, may further influence engagement in gambling behaviors and susceptibility to negative outcomes. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, the present study investigated the relationships between gambling injunctive norms, gambling attitudes, and gambling self-efficacy across three outcomes: gambling frequency, problem gambling severity, and gambling intention. …

Penalty Approach To Constrained Optimization Problems In Water Reservoir And Energy Generation Management, Edwin Horacio Trejo May 2026

Penalty Approach To Constrained Optimization Problems In Water Reservoir And Energy Generation Management, Edwin Horacio Trejo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The growing demand for resilient and sustainable energy generation has driven interest in Hybrid Floating Photovoltaic-Hydropower (HFPVH) systems. Operating these systems effectively requires making water release decisions that satisfy physical and regulatory constraints while maximizing energy production. Prior work by Vega (2024) developed a Dynamic Outlier Filter Long Short-Term Memory (DOF-LSTM) architecture for forecasting reservoir release patterns. That predictive work is valid and addresses an important component of the HFPVH decision pipeline. However, the constraint system in that work operates externally to the learning process, and the behavior of penalty-based constraint enforcement had not been studied independently in this context. …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Pfas Induced Protein Dysfunction: Implications For Neurodegenerative Risk, Daisy Lee Wilson May 2026

Molecular Mechanisms Of Pfas Induced Protein Dysfunction: Implications For Neurodegenerative Risk, Daisy Lee Wilson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with widespread human exposure and well-established links to adverse health outcomes. However, despite increasing epidemiological and experimental evidence, the molecular mechanisms underlying PFAS-induced neurotoxicity remain incompletely defined. This dissertation investigates PFAS toxicity across biological scales, integrating protein biophysics with neuronal cell models to elucidate pathways relevant to neurodegeneration. At the molecular level, we demonstrate that PFAS disrupts the structure and function of globular proteins, including the impairment of α-lactalbumin's calcium-binding capacity and of β-lactoglobulin's retinol binding, through concentration-dependent conformational destabilization. By applying these findings to a neuronal model, we show that …

Comparative Case Studies Of How General Chemistry Ii Students Explain Entropically-Driven Phenomena, Raymundo Aragonez May 2026

Comparative Case Studies Of How General Chemistry Ii Students Explain Entropically-Driven Phenomena, Raymundo Aragonez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Understanding how students conceptualize entropy remains a central challenge in chemistry education. Often referred to as a "driving force" of chemical reactions, the dispersal of energy as a process proceeds is indicative of a process's spontaneity or thermodynamic favorability. Students frequently default to discussing phenomena in deterministic terms, potentially reflecting the language choice and heuristics selected by the instructor such as "disorder". In this study, assessment prompts about entropy from a convenience sample of general chemistry textbooks were characterized as to their potential to elicit three-dimensional learning, and students' responses to assessment prompts from a curriculum aligned with three-dimensional learning …

Automated Arctic Coastal Boundary Extraction From Multispectral Satellite Imagery, Harshavardhini Bagavathyraj May 2026

Automated Arctic Coastal Boundary Extraction From Multispectral Satellite Imagery, Harshavardhini Bagavathyraj

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Arctic coastlines are changing rapidly as permafrost thaw and coastal erosion accelerate under a warming climate, creating a need for accurate and scalable methods to monitor landscape change. Two geomorphically important indicators of this change are the shoreline, which represents the land--water boundary, and the bluff edge, which marks the transition from vegetated tundra to the coastal slope or cliff. However, delineating these features from high-resolution imagery remains challenging because Arctic scenes are spatially extensive and visually complex. In this study, we address these challenges by developing deep learning methods for automated shoreline and bluff-edge extraction from high-resolution satellite imagery …

Language Control Over Structural Representation In Bilinguals, Anahy Barragan-Diaz May 2026

Language Control Over Structural Representation In Bilinguals, Anahy Barragan-Diaz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In daily life, bilinguals sometimes speak each of their languages in situations where the other language cannot be understood. To avoid saying words in the wrong language in such situations, bilinguals inhibit lexical representations from the non-target language (Green, 1998). But do they inhibit structural representations? This study investigated how inhibitory control operates over structural representations in English-dominant Spanish-English bilinguals via a picture description task. An experimental group was asked to describe dative-eliciting pictures in English (Baseline Phase), followed by dative pictures in Spanish (Manipulation Phase), and once again dative pictures in English (Target Phase), while a control group followed …

Effective Prediction Of Martensite Start Temperature By Hybrid Machine Learning And Ethical A.I. In Materials Science, Agniprava Banerjee May 2026

Effective Prediction Of Martensite Start Temperature By Hybrid Machine Learning And Ethical A.I. In Materials Science, Agniprava Banerjee

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The martensite start temperature Ms governs heat treatment design and mechanical property development in martensitic steel alloys. Accurate prediction of Ms from chemical composition alone would accelerate alloy development, yet existing empirical equations lack accuracy for multi-component steels and purely data-driven models provide no physically principled behavior outside their training domain. This dissertation develops a hybrid machine learning-physics framework for predicting Ms in steel alloys from composition. The MAP Cambridge dataset (1,020 cleaned records, 15 alloying elements) is processed through a five-stage cleaning pipeline and a 21-feature physics augmented representation, including the Ghosh-Olson Ms thermodynamic prediction as an explicit feature. …

Blood, Steel, And Stone, Jennifer Camplair Hassell May 2026

Blood, Steel, And Stone, Jennifer Camplair Hassell

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis, Blood, Stone, and Steel, explores the intergenerational impact of trauma, memory, and history through a unique blend of poetry, photography, and personal family narratives. Drawing on archival materials, family photographs, and the tradition of documentary poetry, the work investigates how the legacy of war and immigration shapes identity across generations. Inspired by Marianne Hirsch's concept of postmemory, the author examines inherited memories and their affective transmission, focusing on the experiences of her great-grandfather - a German immigrant and WWI veteran - and the subsequent effects on her family. The narrative is structured in three parts: BLOOD, reflecting loss …

Computational Studies Of Dna-Wrapped Carbon Nanotubes: From Enantioselective Dna Binding To Molecular Recognition Of Small-Molecule Analytes, Sayantani Chakraborty

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit chirality-dependent optoelectronic properties and near-infrared fluorescence that make them promising platforms for biosensing. When functionalized with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), SWCNTs form conjugates capable of selective molecular recognition. However, the molecular mechanisms governing chirality recognition and analyte-induced optical modulation remain incompletely understood. This dissertation investigates these mechanisms through an integrated computational approach combining molecular dynamics simulations, enhanced sampling techniques, and machine learning. First, atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) and replica exchange MD simulations were used to investigate how short ssDNA sequences interact with enantiomers of (7,5) SWCNTs. Analyses of base stacking, nucleotide orientation, sugar-phosphate positioning, and contact …

Hvsr-Based Resonance Analysis And Fault Zone Characterization In The El Paso Region, Alexandro Dominguez May 2026

Hvsr-Based Resonance Analysis And Fault Zone Characterization In The El Paso Region, Alexandro Dominguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) analysis offers an efficient method for characterizing near-surface structure, resolving sediment thickness, and identifying fault-controlled basin geometry in regions with strong impedance contrasts. This study applies HVSR techniques to continuous ambient-noise recordings collected across the El Paso region, a tectonically active segment of the southern Rio Grande Rift where accurate subsurface mapping is essential for seismic hazard assessment. Ambient-noise windows were processed, spectrally smoothed, and stacked to obtain stable HVSR curves, from which fundamental resonance frequencies and corresponding sediment-thickness estimates were derived. Spatial patterns in these resonance frequencies reveal pronounced basin asymmetry, abrupt lateral …

From Covid-19 To Influenza: Transforming Public Health Surveillance Through Freeze-Drying Innovations, Rui Dong May 2026

From Covid-19 To Influenza: Transforming Public Health Surveillance Through Freeze-Drying Innovations, Rui Dong

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Public health surveillance increasingly relies on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) as a non-invasive, community-level early warning system for infectious diseases like COVID-19 and influenza. However, detecting minute viral concentrations in complex wastewater matrices remains a significant analytical challenge. Traditional concentrating methods, such as ultrafiltration, are limited by high performance variability and significant viral signal loss due to necessary pretreatment steps, such as pre-clarification, which inadvertently discard solid-associated viral fractions. To address these limitations, this dissertation introduces and evaluates freeze-drying as a novel, pretreatment-free concentrating method for wastewater viral surveillance. By sublimating water, freeze-drying uniquely retains both liquid and solid-phase viruses within …

A Diagnostic Test For Confounding Under Collapsibility In Generalized Linear Models (Glms), Samuel Dela Gadah May 2026

A Diagnostic Test For Confounding Under Collapsibility In Generalized Linear Models (Glms), Samuel Dela Gadah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis develops and validates a diagnostic framework for assessing potential confounding in generalized linear models (GLMs) with collapsible link functions. Under collapsibility and effect homogeneity, the absence of confounding implies equality between marginal and covariate-adjusted treatment effects on the link scale, which motivates the change-in-estimate parameter δ = γ − γ(c) as the target of a formal hypothesis test. Two complementary inferential routes are developed: a nonparametric bootstrap and an independent estimating equation (IEE) procedure based on a stacked-data construction that yields a closed-form sandwich variance and is implementable in standard generalized estimating equation software. A backward elimination procedure …

Effects Of Cannabinoid Agonist Win 55-212-2 On Latent Inhibition, Ashley Peterson May 2026

Effects Of Cannabinoid Agonist Win 55-212-2 On Latent Inhibition, Ashley Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a modulatory system that helps regulate brain functions, including learning and memory, influencing processes such as latent inhibition (LI). LI refers to the slower association formed when a familiar event is paired with a new outcome, compared to the association of an unfamiliar event. LI is a process that is often disrupted in individuals with schizophrenia and is known as a cognitive symptom. This study aimed to determine whether the drug WIN-55-212-2 (WIN), which interacts with the ECS, influences the process of LI using a fear-conditioned response procedure. The results found no significant interaction among …

A Low Power Fpga Compute Array For Machine Learning And Artificial Intelligence Applications, Todd Wilson May 2026

A Low Power Fpga Compute Array For Machine Learning And Artificial Intelligence Applications, Todd Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Modern small satellites often lack the ability to analyze their data in real time, relying instead on downlinking raw measurements to Earth before any scientific interpretation can occur. This delay restricts missions that require rapid awareness of environmental or space-weather events. This thesis presents the Low-power Array for Cubesat Edge Computing Architecture, Algorithms, and Applications (LACE-C3A), a hardware platform designed to enable in-orbit data processing within the power and volume limits of CubeSat-class spacecraft.

LACE-C3A uses a modular cluster of flash-based FPGAs, which offer low power consumption, radiation resilience, and in-flight reconfigurability. The system consists of a Controller board responsible …

Ionospheric Plasma Electron Density Measurement And Theory Using Impedance Probe Techniques, Justin Wellington May 2026

Ionospheric Plasma Electron Density Measurement And Theory Using Impedance Probe Techniques, Justin Wellington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The ionosphere plays a critical role in how radio frequency (RF) signals, like those used in Global Position System (GPS) satellite communications, travel through space. Disturbances in the ionosphere, such as equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB), scatter these signals and cause communication dropouts or navigational errors. To study these conditions, spacecraft use instruments that measure the surrounding plasma directly. One of these instruments is an impedance probe, which applies a small electrical signal to a sensor and determines electron density from the measured impedance.

This thesis improves the modeling and interpretation of impedance probe measurements. A numerical method is developed that …

Understanding The Equestrian Learner: A Sociomaterial Analysis Of Equestrian Learners, Anna Lloyd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Limited research has been done on equestrian riders actively participating in training programs. To better understand these equestrians, this study examined how elements in their learning environments influenced their learning. Data was collected through interviews with two active, competing adult female members of the United States Hunter Jumper Association. Key findings from analyzing these equestrians’ relationships with different elements in their learning environment include the finding that equestrians shift between viewing horses as material objects or social partners, depending on the context. It was also seen that an equestrian’s skill is not dependent solely on the rider, but is influenced …

Aerodynamic Parameter Estimation For A Scaled F-16: A Simulation-Based Sensitivity Analysis, Kathle C. Tischner May 2026

Aerodynamic Parameter Estimation For A Scaled F-16: A Simulation-Based Sensitivity Analysis, Kathle C. Tischner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The physical motion of an aircraft is determined by the resulting forces and moments acting on the aircraft. These forces and moments can be defined as a mathematical equation where the control deflections, rotation rates, and orientation of the aircraft are multiplied by individual constants and summed together to define the entire force or moment. This method results in a highly accurate model that defines the motion of the aircraft at low angles of attack and sideslip. Initial calculations of the aerodynamic model are created based on analytical estimations based on the physical properties of the aircraft. Additional refinement of …

Sequential Products Of Anaerobic Denitrification In Calcareous And Noncalcareous Soils By Use Of The Gas Chromatograph, Grant S. Cooper

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The sequential products of anaerobic denitrification were determined on seven Western soils (four alkaline, two acid, and one neutral) by soil and gas analysis. The soils with 1% alfalfa and added KNO3 were incubated at moistures slightly greater than field capacity and with an atmosphere of He. The soils and gases were periodically analyzed and balance sheets prepared. The sequence of NO3-->NO2-->N2O-->N2 operated in all soils. The rates of nitrogen interchanges and maximal amounts of nitrate, N2O2 and N2 were determined. From this data it was postulated that the rate-limiting process for denitrification in acid soils is …

Online Act Guide For Sub-Clinical And Clinical Insomnia Among College Students, Guadalupe "Gabe" San Miguel May 2026

Online Act Guide For Sub-Clinical And Clinical Insomnia Among College Students, Guadalupe "Gabe" San Miguel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

College students are shown to have more sleep difficulties, specifically insomnia. These sleep difficulties compared to the general public due to the college environment (for example increase screen time, sedentary time, or alcohol use). Students with reported sleep difficulties have ties to lower GPA and lower odds of graduation. That is why this dissertation conducted a comparison between an online version of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (intervention) to a placebo condition among college students with insomnia to help determine if the intervention had better outcomes over time. Each condition (intervention = 39; placebo = 40) completed questionnaires at the start …

This thesis develops a method of optimal control for a spacecraft in the region between the Earth and the Moon known as cislunar space. The optimal control method is developed through a modern optimization technique called “convex relaxation” to achieve a formulation that can be reliably solved by numerical computation tools. The primary research objective is to evaluate the efficacy of this method in accommodating the physical thrust constraints of a spacecraft. This approach is tested in simulation with an unstable halo orbit around the Moon in the circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) model. The simulation incorporates realistic disruptions from …

Adversarial Heterogeneous Agent Learning For Robotic Systems: A Framework For Coordinated Competitive Behaviors, Christopher T. Allred May 2026

Adversarial Heterogeneous Agent Learning For Robotic Systems: A Framework For Coordinated Competitive Behaviors, Christopher T. Allred

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Autonomous robot teams must move reliably, explain their actions, and work together—even in changing or adversarial settings. We present a structured, three-stage pathway that builds coordinated team behavior from strong single-robot skills. First, we develop robust legged-robot locomotion and interpretability using only internal actuator signals. From these proprioceptive cues, robots learn to classify terrain and predict short-term power use, enabling energy-aware movement without external sensors. We further analyze learned behaviors with motif discovery to reveal recurring sensor–action patterns, which clarify how agility emerges and guide reward design. Second, we compose these skills into heterogeneous teamwork using centralized training with decentralized …

This study was an autohistoria-teoría, a type of autoethnography, where I focused on my writing process as a Pasifika researcher creating a middle- grade fiction. As the researcher, my questions delved into how I engage in writing for a majority-culture dominated publication house in a Western-world writing genre while maintaining the cultural significance of the ancient Pasifika mythologies I reproduced and recontextualized in the novel. The research site was my writing process, and the data gathered came from the variety of ways I navigated cultural stimuli specific to writing the novel. The outcome engaged with the specific way Pasifika (and …

Effects Of Training And Self-Monitoring On Paraeducators' Use Of Behavior Specific Praise, Camille J. Lopez May 2026

Effects Of Training And Self-Monitoring On Paraeducators' Use Of Behavior Specific Praise, Camille J. Lopez

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Paraeducators support students with disabilities in special education classrooms but often receive limited training in effective behavior support strategies. This study examined whether training combined with self-monitoring increased paraeducators’ use of positive, specific praise and reduced the use of reprimands during instruction. Paraeducators were trained to use and track their own praise while working with students. Results showed increased use of positive praise and decreased reprimands following the intervention. These findings suggest that brief, low-cost training and self-monitoring can improve paraeducator instructional practices and support positive classroom environments for students with disabilities.

Effects Of Subsurface-Drip-Irrigation On Alfalfa Evapotranspiration In The Intermountain West, Namuna Dhakal May 2026

Effects Of Subsurface-Drip-Irrigation On Alfalfa Evapotranspiration In The Intermountain West, Namuna Dhakal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Alfalfa is one of Utah’s most important crops, but it is also the largest agricultural consumer of water. Because the state faces frequent droughts and growing pressure on limited water supplies, farmers and water managers are increasingly interested in irrigation systems that could reduce water use. Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI), which delivers water directly to plant roots through buried drip lines, has shown promising results in other regions, where it often reduces water consumption and increases yield. However, little research has evaluated SDI under Utah’s unique climate, soils, and high-elevation valleys.

This study compared an SDI system with a traditional …
