Derivation Of New Readability Formulas (Automated Readability Index, Fog Count And Flesch Reading Ease Formula) For Navy Enlisted Personnel, J. Peter Kincaid, Robert P. Fishburne Jr., Richard L. Rogers, Brad S. Chissom
Derivation Of New Readability Formulas (Automated Readability Index, Fog Count And Flesch Reading Ease Formula) For Navy Enlisted Personnel, J. Peter Kincaid, Robert P. Fishburne Jr., Richard L. Rogers, Brad S. Chissom
Institute for Simulation and Training
Three readability formulas were recalculated to be more suitable for Navy use. The three formulas are the Automated Readability Index (ARI), Fog Count, and Flesch Reading Ease Formula. They were derived from test results of 531 Navy enlisted personnel enrolled in four technical training schools at two Navy bases: Naval Air Station at Memphis, and Great Lakes Navy Training Center. Personnel were tested for their reading comprehension level according to the comprehension section of the Gates-McGinitie reading test. At the same time, they were tested for their comprehension of 18 passages taken from Rate Training Manuals.
Computer Generated Holograms, Jeffrey James Gierloff
Computer Generated Holograms, Jeffrey James Gierloff
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Computer generated holograms have been made practical by the introduction of fast Fourier transform algorithms. The following discussion will brief the reader on the theory and concepts of optical holograms, the computer hologram, and the analogies of the computer hologram to its optical counterpart. Some of the programming aspects of the computer holograms are presented. The results of the generation of several computer holograms are presented, and conclusions drawn as to the effectiveness of this technique. Finally, some of the practical uses and advantages of the computer hologram are discussed.

It is the intent of this paper to review the Acquisition Management SysternVProgram Management concepts of the major Armed Services comprising the Department of Defense (DOD), Army, Navy and the Air Force, and the System Management process associated with System Acquisition. As such, this paper reviews highlights of the DOD Program Management Acquisition Management Systems. The study is closely related to the writer's position at Naval Training Equipment Center. Being a DOD employee and operating in a technical environment, specifically in a position of employing the Program Management concept to in-house major tasks the need for more fully understanding and …
Digital Communication Systems Technical Control, Joel L. Horrell
Digital Communication Systems Technical Control, Joel L. Horrell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of the methods of control of an advanced military communication system. The Tactical Communication Control System has been conceived to meet the demands of military users which are currently both analog and digital but steadily evolving to all - digital. It is a study of the design and application of multiplexers, modems, processors, switches, and other nodal equipment to accommodate communications among telephone and data users in a tactical environment. The main points of interest are the communication node and the control techniques used to carry out system objectives.

Computer Aided Analysis Of Flat Plate Solar Collectors, Thomas L. Hartman
Computer Aided Analysis Of Flat Plate Solar Collectors, Thomas L. Hartman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A computer model of a flat plate solar collector has been devised. The model is able to simulate most common types of collectors, with up to three transparent covers of any material. Using primarily equations available from the literature the model calculates the transmission through the cover plates, the heat losses, and the useful heat gain. Derivation of all equations used are presented. A new method is presented for calculation of the mean plate temperature which differs from that commonly used in the literature. Experimental evidence is presented indicating that when transient effects are negligible the model is able to …
Test Methods For Evaluating Performance Of Solar Units, William Joseph Vitaliano
Test Methods For Evaluating Performance Of Solar Units, William Joseph Vitaliano
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report is concerned with the performance of solar hot water units for laboratory and field use. A solar unit is defined as a system consisting of a collector, storage tank, piping system and controls. Older unites typically employ the thermosyphon principle (gravity) while more recent models use a water pump to circulate the water. Basically, the collector absorbs solar radiation and transfers thermal energy to the water flowing in the collector tubing. From the collector, the fluid is pumped to the storage tank at which point the hot water is available for usage. A literature search revealed that very …
Design And Calibration Of A Three Component, Single Element, Wind Tunnel Force Balance, Victor W. Tisdel
Design And Calibration Of A Three Component, Single Element, Wind Tunnel Force Balance, Victor W. Tisdel
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to design a simplified wind tunnel force balance for use in elementary aerodynamics/wind tunnel laboratory courses. The applied loads and moments were determined to be as follows: The design lift force is ± 20 lbs, the design drag force is ± 10 pounds, the design pitching moment is ± 20 inch-pounds. The force balance output accuracy was arbitrarily set at ± 5% since this would be sufficient for preliminary student work. The results of this work are as follows: The force balance is fabricated from a single bar of 2024 aluminum, machines and bent …
