Florida's Fudged Identity, Stephen J. Whitfield Mar 2022

Florida's Fudged Identity, Stephen J. Whitfield

Florida Historical Quarterly

"No symbols where none intended," the warning that Samuel Beckett issued near the end of his second novel, would drive American Studies professors out of business and push them into an occupation of greater social benefit.1 For it is the point of this essay to find some inadvertent symbols and to discern iconographic significance in the history of a state. Florida should make an especially promising subject because of its mythic status, tapping into the nation’s definition of itself. Its saga appears to be more than a combination of geographic constraints and political boundaries and economic developments and demographic patterns. …

Chloe Merrick Reed: Freedom's First Lady, Sarah Whitmer Foster Mar 2022

Chloe Merrick Reed: Freedom's First Lady, Sarah Whitmer Foster

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the past three decades Florida’s Civil War and Reconstruction-era history has been the subject of careful reconsideration. Beginning with the 1963 publication of John E. Johns’s Florida During the Civil War and continuing with Joe M. Richardson’s The Negro in the Reconstruction of Florida, 1865-1877 and Jerrell H. Shofner’s Nor Is It Over Yet: Florida in the Era of Reconstruction, 1863-1877, the complexities of the period have been vividly revealed.1 New and far more positive perspectives upon the lives and careers of black leaders, carpetbaggers, and southern loyalists can be credited among the results of this revisionist scholarship.

Political Leadership Among The Natives Of Spanish Florida, John H. Hann Mar 2022

Political Leadership Among The Natives Of Spanish Florida, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

When the first Europeans arrived off Florida’s coasts the land was not uninhabited virgin territory but was occupied by many distinct peoples organized into flourishing, complex, chiefdom-level societies of a non-egalitarian nature. Those societies included the Calusa of the Gulf coast from the Charlotte Harbor area southward to the tip of the Florida peninsula; Tocobaga and others who occupied the shores of Tampa Bay and their hinterland; Ais of the Indian River area and its hinterland; various autonomous Timucua-speaking groups of south Georgia and north Florida from the east coast westward to the Aucilla, Withlacoochee, and Oklawaha rivers; Apalachee whose …

East Florida Papers, 1784-1821, Sherry Johnson Mar 2022

East Florida Papers, 1784-1821, Sherry Johnson

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1821, as a result of the Adams-Onís Treaty negotiated in 1819, the province of East Florida was ceded from Spain to the United States. On November 5, 1821, during the transfer proceedings in St. Augustine, North American representatives certified that they had received a series of documents, a transaction that was affirmed by Spanish royal notary Juan de Entralgo. 1 In doing so, United States commissioners acquired the official archives relating to the Spanish administration in East Florida from 1784 to 1821, a time designated by historians as the Second Spanish Period.2 Collectively, these documents have come to be …

Review Essay: Osceola: The White Man's Indian, Theda Perdue Mar 2022

Review Essay: Osceola: The White Man's Indian, Theda Perdue

Florida Historical Quarterly

Patricia R. Wickman’s study of Osceola is not a typical biography. She outlines the major events in the life of Osceola, but her focus is primarily on Osceolana— that is, the artifacts associated with the hero of the Seminoles’ struggle to remain in their homeland. She attempts to separate the genuine accounts of his life and accurate visual representations of him from those that are derivative, and she authenticates some personal belongings while casting considerable doubt on others. Her narrative reads like a detective story. Like all detective work, some of her investigation is technical and dull, while other parts …

William Bartram's Travels In The Indian Nations, Charlotte M. Porter Mar 2022

William Bartram's Travels In The Indian Nations, Charlotte M. Porter

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1773, the famous American naturalist William Bartram returned to the southeast portion of what is now the United States. The region was a more dangerous place than he realized. American “patriots” from Georgia were making troublesome border raids into East Florida. Many of the English plantations were owned in absentia, and the lives of the resident managers were, as Bartram knew from personal experience, isolated. Indian groups far outnumbered white residents in the Floridas, and they were becoming increasingly hostile. With an estimated 4,500 warriors, the Lower Creeks seriously impeded any colonial presence in the East Florida interior. In …

The Last Shall Be First: Northern Methodists In Reconstruction Jacksonville, John T. Foster, Jr. Mar 2022

The Last Shall Be First: Northern Methodists In Reconstruction Jacksonville, John T. Foster, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

During Reconstruction, many northern men and women contributed to Florida’s social, political, and economic life. Their efforts— and those of the northern institutions and organizations that supported them— provided immediate assistance to the needy and resulted, as well, in the establishment of churches, schools, and other institutions that endured the test of time. Nonetheless, most Floridians have gained only a one-dimensional understanding of the contributions of Northerners during Reconstruction, usually through the highly critical eyes of historians such as William Watson Davis. Of them, Davis, a disciple of Columbia University’s Dunning School of Reconstruction historiography, wrote: “The failure of the …

Across The Border: Commodity Flow And Merchants In Spanish St. Augustine, James Cusick Mar 2022

Across The Border: Commodity Flow And Merchants In Spanish St. Augustine, James Cusick

Florida Historical Quarterly

Spanish Governor Zéspedes, writing in 1788 to a superior about his impressions of East Florida, decried the colony’s reliance on Havana as its sole source of supply. The majority of the colonists were far too impoverished, he wrote, to afford the high prices of goods shipped via Cuba. He continued: “[T]hat a poor immigrant at the end of one year, when he has made his first crop, or a Minorcan with a wife and four or five children who does not earn half a peso fuerte a day, should have to provide his family with goods bought from that place …
