Volusia: The Origin Of A Name, Donald C. Gaby

Florida Historical Quarterly

The origin of the name “Volusia” for the county and community in Florida has been a mystery. Although at least three explanations have been offered, many professional historians writing of Florida or of Volusia County claim that the origin of the name is unknown.

Wife-Killers And Evil Temptresses: Gender, Pardons And Respectability In Florida, 1889-1914, Vivien Miller Mar 2022

Wife-Killers And Evil Temptresses: Gender, Pardons And Respectability In Florida, 1889-1914, Vivien Miller

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida's State Board of Pardons, created by the state constitution of 1868, was a necessary component of the state’s criminal justice system in the late 19th and 20th centuries due to the general inadequacy of the penal arrangements,1 the frequency with which judges imposed death penalties on those convicted of firstdegree murder, and the absence of any probation or parole facilities. Letters to the pardoning board, to successive governors and to newspapers such as the Florida Times Union and the Tampa Tribune, indicate accord among diverse sections of Florida society on the need for harsh punishment for those who committed …

A Botanical Mystery The Elusive Trail Of The Datil Pepper To St. Augustine, Jean Andrews Mar 2022

A Botanical Mystery The Elusive Trail Of The Datil Pepper To St. Augustine, Jean Andrews

Florida Historical Quarterly

Since December 1984, when Peppers: The Domesticated Capsicums was published, interest in growing and eating capsicums has increased dramatically. Prior to that publication, little attention had been given to the historical aspects of the genus Capsicum, which is comprised of all the green and red peppers (pimientos) in the world, but does not include its namesake black pepper (pimienta) or Piper nigrum, a native of India, and a much wanted item in the pre-Columbian spice trade. Five-hundred years ago, while Christopher Columbus was searching for a shorter route to India and the East Indies in order to break the Muslim …

Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr. Mar 2022

Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Northern teachers in the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction have been the subject of various studies.1 This literature emphasizes the origins and development of the aid societies that sponsored the teachers, and it focuses upon major figures who shaped educational policy. At the same time, little attention details the activities of early northern teachers in Florida within the context of developments in other places. Florida’s experience varies from other parts of the South, and it offers, by contrast, a fresh perspective on the regional experience. Ansel Eddy Kinne’s career provides an opportunity for understanding aid societies. From early …

Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson Mar 2022

Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson

Florida Historical Quarterly

"It had begun with Christmas,” declared Claudia, Toni Morrison’s narrator in her novel The Bluest Eye. “The big, the special, the loving gift was always a big, blue-eyed, Baby Doll. From the clucking sounds of adults I knew that the doll represented what they thought was my fondest wish. I was bemused with the thing itself, and the way it looked. What was I supposed to do with it?“1 Through much of the twentieth century, generations of African-American children experienced the full force of this fictional character’s dilemma. Their skin color posed a barrier between their self-image and the image …

Samuel Proctor, Editor, Florida Historical Quarterly, 1963-1993: A Tribute, Michael Gannon

Florida Historical Quarterly

In any enumeration of American historians of Florida who have significantly advanced the craft and expanded the field, one would name George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906), our state’s first serious historian in the English language and charter member of the Historical Society of Florida in 1856; Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871), first American scholar to collect and copy documentary materials for the history of Florida from archives in Spain; Woodbury Lowery (1853- 1906), whose two volumes, The Spanish Settlements within the Present Limits of the United States,1 first placed Florida historiography on a professional footing and established standards of research and citation …
