Self-Perception Of Needs: A Study Of Secondary Health Occupations Teachers, Karen E. Gable Rdh, Ed.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

Assessment of needs of individuals plays a major role in identifying curricular content and processes for professional growth and development. This study specifically addressed the technical knowledge and skills perceived by secondary Health Occupations teachers to be currently possessed or needed to be gained. General nursing care skills were found not to be needed. The greatest expression of need was for medical laboratory procedures and computer utilization. Needs assessment of the intended student group has long been held to be a primary component of curriculum design. Not only has the assessment been a tenet of preservice educational program design but …

Triple Crown, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2015

Triple Crown, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was a just a year ago that I wrote about the last attempt at a Triple Crown. This year we are at that point again where a race of approximately two minutes and twenty seconds will either end a remarkable era of Triple Crown futility or extend it for yet another year. And so with a few changes of the cast I submit again these observations on this marvelous weekend in horse racing history.

Characterizing The Onset And Progression Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy In H304r Mutant Mice, Aaron Ledray May 2015

Characterizing The Onset And Progression Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy In H304r Mutant Mice, Aaron Ledray

HIM 1990-2015

Dynein is a motor protein complex that transports various types of intracellular cargos from the cell periphery towards the cell center. Dynein mutations are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). A mouse model of CMT was generated with a knock-in H304R dynein allele. This mutation at position 304 corresponds to the H306R mutation found in humans that can cause CMT. Here, a behavioral test was developed to study the onset and progression of CMT symptoms in these mice. In the tail suspension test, mice were suspended briefly by their tails and the posture of their hind limbs …

Analysis And Implications Of Guest Attitudes Towards Queuing In Theme Parks, Austin Lemaster May 2015

Analysis And Implications Of Guest Attitudes Towards Queuing In Theme Parks, Austin Lemaster

HIM 1990-2015

Queue lines are a fundamental inevitably of the modern theme park. Parks have begun to introduce various systems for combating the normal queue, some of which are at no extra cost to guests and some of which are an extra cost. These systems feature a variety of methods by which guests can bypass the normal queue and enter one featuring a minimal wait. Parks have also started to introduce elements within queues that make waiting in them easier and change guests’ perception of time, thus making the waits seem shorter. This thesis attempts to determine the attitudes of guests towards …

My Black Is Beautiful: A Study Of How Hair Is Portrayed In Children's And Young Adult Literature, Quacy-Ann Webley May 2015

My Black Is Beautiful: A Study Of How Hair Is Portrayed In Children's And Young Adult Literature, Quacy-Ann Webley

HIM 1990-2015

This research seeks to examine how authors represent Black/African-American beauty in children’s literature. To conduct my research, I have chosen to review Natasha Tarpley’s I Love My Hair and Carolivia Herron’s Nappy Hair in conjunction with Zora Neale Hurston’s young adult novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. The objective of my thesis aims to highlight the emphasis authors place on Black/African-American children’s hair and the cultural differences in their perceptions of Afro-beauty. Today, society expends extensive time and interest in outward appearances through media: television, radio, digital media, and fashion magazines. As a result, Black/African-American adolescent and teen girls become …

The Effects Of Complementary Hippotherapy For Children With Austism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Hicks May 2015

The Effects Of Complementary Hippotherapy For Children With Austism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Hicks

HIM 1990-2015

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an intricate and complex disorder that continues to grow in its prevalence year after year. The disorder is based on decreased social communication with prevalent stereotypical behaviors and problems in sensory processing. Due to the disorder diagnosis based on a spectrum, each child is different in their severity, and thus requires individualized forms of therapies and treatments. The cause of ASD is unknown, which makes the treatment difficult to standardize. Desperate to find a regimen that benefits their child’s ability to function more successfully, more and more parents are utilizing complementary alternative medicine (CAM). The …

Intersectional Invisibility: A Comparison Among Caucasian, African-American, And Latino Men And Women, De'siree Reeves May 2015

Intersectional Invisibility: A Comparison Among Caucasian, African-American, And Latino Men And Women, De'siree Reeves

HIM 1990-2015

The objective of this thesis was to investigate intersectional (categorical/social) invisibility and the extent to which this phenomenon occurs in a comparison of dominant (i.e., Caucasian), and non-dominant (African-American and Latino) social/ethnic groups. It has been found that intersectional invisibility occurs among African-American women with respect to Caucasian men and women, and African American men (Sesko & Biernat, 2010), but little of this research has been done regarding Latinas. Thus, this experiment aims to not only examine whether Latinas are also subject to intersectional invisibility among dominant (i.e., Caucasian) and non-dominant (i.e., African American and/or Latino) groups, but to determine …

Effects Of Ghrko Visceral Fat Transplant On Insulin Signaling, Mohammed Bennis May 2015

Effects Of Ghrko Visceral Fat Transplant On Insulin Signaling, Mohammed Bennis

HIM 1990-2015

Insulin sensitivity has been positively correlated with a healthy and extended lifespan, while insulin resistance, decreased insulin sensitivity, has been linked to aging and is the main indicative of type 2 diabetes. Growth Hormone Receptor/ Binding Protein Knockout mice (GHRKO), although obese, are characterized by high insulin sensitivity and a prolonged lifespan. Due to the absence of growth hormone receptors (GHR), growth hormone (GH) is unable to activate its downstream pathway. Interestingly, the secretory activity of visceral fat in GHRKO mice is altered stimulating insulin sensitivity. In this study, we transplanted normal (N) mice with GHRKO visceral fat pads to …

A Psychophysiological Investigation Of The Proposed Paradoxical Effects Of Valuing Happiness, Nicholas Coles May 2015

A Psychophysiological Investigation Of The Proposed Paradoxical Effects Of Valuing Happiness, Nicholas Coles

HIM 1990-2015

Several researchers in happiness studies have called for an increased sociopolitical interest in indicators of societal happiness. However, recent evidence for the proposed paradoxical effects of valuing happiness suggest that an increase in society’s perceived value of happiness may exert a detrimental, inverse influence on well-being. This notion is based on previous research demonstrating that manipulating participants to value happiness causes them to experience less positive emotions, compared to controls, when viewing positive film clips. Following the humanistic notion that the maximization of societal happiness is an advantageous sociopolitical endeavor, the proposed paradoxical effects of valuing happiness present a psychological …

One technology option that has proven to be of particular interest to families of children with ASD involves the use AAC iPad apps. Research has been conducted in AAC, ASD, and music, but there is limited research to date, which …

The Death Penalty Debate: A Critical Examination Of The Moral Justifications For Capital Punishment, Whitley Mann May 2015

The Death Penalty Debate: A Critical Examination Of The Moral Justifications For Capital Punishment, Whitley Mann

HIM 1990-2015

Capital punishment is a forceful moral issue that is frequently overlooked. This is possibly due to the reverence many have toward the rule of law or a passive acceptance of the status quo. In this thesis I will begin with a discussion of context to the topic of the death penalty in order to address potential biases. Then I examine not only the ethical merit of the death penalty but the foundational justifications for a system of criminal justice to show that the special relationship between the state and its citizens does not lend itself to or allow for the …

The Relationship Between Patient Education And Adherence To Antibiotic Regimens: Exploring Profiles Of Adherent Groups, Morgan Mcsweeney

HIM 1990-2015

Objective: Currently, there does not exist a cohesive and predictive set of criteria that can be used to identify patients that are at risk of being non-adherent to antibiotic regimens. In this study, we sought to answer the question of whether patients’ knowledge of the scientific background of antibiotic resistance is related to their likelihood to adhere to antibiotic regimens. Additionally, we explored other facets of the profiles of adherent and non-adherent subjects. Methods: All responses were collected via questionnaire. Subjects were split into two groups (adherent and non-adherent) based upon four patient-behavior questions. These two groups of subjects were …

Understanding Gender Identity Among Women Cosplayers Of The Gotham City Sirens, Amber Morrison May 2015

Understanding Gender Identity Among Women Cosplayers Of The Gotham City Sirens, Amber Morrison

HIM 1990-2015

As popular culture has an increasing presence in America, so do its various sub-cultures. One of such sub-cultures is the world of comic book fans known as cosplayers. Cosplayers dress-up and emulate characters at comic book conventions throughout the United States and the world—a practice known as cosplay, also described as costume-play. Despite the growing popularity of cosplay, little is known about this population. In this research, I set out to answer the following research question: why are women choosing to dress-up and embody these characters (the Gotham City Sirens) when they are often viewed as oversexualized. In order to …

Stable Isotope Evidence For The Geographic Origins And Military Movement Of Napoleonic Soldiers During The March From Moscow In 1812, Serenela Pelier May 2015

Stable Isotope Evidence For The Geographic Origins And Military Movement Of Napoleonic Soldiers During The March From Moscow In 1812, Serenela Pelier

HIM 1990-2015

In 2001, 3269 unidentified individuals were found in a mass grave on the Northern part of Vilnius, Lithuania. Artifactual context indicates that these individuals were likely soldiers that were a part of Napoleon’s Grand Army. Stable oxygen isotope analysis was performed on bone apatite from 9 femoral bone samples to determine whether or not these individuals were Lithuanian locals and to test ratio variation. If individuals were foreigners, then geographical origins were approximated utilizing percentages of C4 plants from Holder (2013) and δ18O values that were extracted from bone apatite. The carbonate oxygen isotope compositions (δ18Ocarbonate) of bone apatite from …

Membrane Topology Of A Broad-Spectrum Resistance Factor Responsible For Lipid Modification In Enterococcus Faecium., Jesse Harrison Jan 2015

Membrane Topology Of A Broad-Spectrum Resistance Factor Responsible For Lipid Modification In Enterococcus Faecium., Jesse Harrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aminoacylphosphatidylglycerol synthases (aaPGSs) are integral membrane proteins that use aminoacyl-tRNAs as substrates to catalyze the addition of amino acids to phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in the cytoplasmic membranes of bacteria. Addition of amino acids to PG decreases the net negative charge of the membrane, conferring resistance to various classes of antibacterial agents (i.e., cationic antimicrobial peptides, beta-lactams, glycopeptides, and lipopeptides) and protecting the cell against osmotic stress and acidic conditions. aaPGS homologs are found in a variety of clinically relevant microorganisms, including Enterococcus faecium, which is increasingly found to be the etiologic agent of antibiotic-resistant nosocomial infections. Although the broad distribution of …

Tailoring Instruction To The Individual: Investigating The Utility Of Trainee Aptitudes For Use In Adaptive Training, Carla Landsberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer-based training has become more prolific as the military and private business enterprises search for more efficient ways to deliver training. However, some methods of computer-based training are not more effective than traditional classroom methods. One technique that may be able to approximate the most effective form of training, one-on-one tutoring, is Adaptive Training (AT). AT techniques use instruction that is tailored to the learner in some way, and can adjust different training parameters such as difficulty, feedback, pace, and delivery mode. There are many ways to adapt training to the learner, and in this study I explored adapting the …
