The Impact Of Ectopic Expression Of A Plant Elicitor Peptide In Bacillus Subtilis On Nematode Resistance In Soybean Through Seed Treatment, Abeer Alnasrawi
The Impact Of Ectopic Expression Of A Plant Elicitor Peptide In Bacillus Subtilis On Nematode Resistance In Soybean Through Seed Treatment, Abeer Alnasrawi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Soybean (Glycine max) is the most beneficial legume crop because it is a source of protein as well as oil for humans and livestock. Soybean is the second most planted crop in the United States following corn and it is also the fourth planted crop worldwide. However, the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines, SCN) is the most damaging pest of soybean in the United States, accounting for more than twice as much yield loss as the following cause of yield loss in soybean. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop alternative management strategies to control SCN infection in soybeans. …
Motives For And Consequences Of Deception In Romantic Relationships, Breanna De Leeuw
Motives For And Consequences Of Deception In Romantic Relationships, Breanna De Leeuw
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goals of this study are twofold. First, I examined the influence of sex, relational intimacy, and face concerns on deploying deceptive communication within romantic relationships. Second, I investigated the impact of deceptive communication on relational commitment and relationship satisfaction. Two hundred twenty-two college-aged students completed self-report measures assessing the variables of interest. Results demonstrated that men and women deceive their romantic relationship partners at similar rates; however, deception is differentially motivated across the sexes. In addition, results indicated that relational intimacy was negatively associated with the frequency of deceit, although relational intimacy was not significantly associated with specific motives …
What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane
What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis centers around two philosophical problems: the concept of a person and the process by which one becomes a morally good person. Drawing on the works of philosophers such as Harry Frankfurt, Strawson, and A.J. Ayer, it begins with an inquiry into what it means to be a person. It argues that while humanhood, with its rational capacities, is a contingent rather than a necessary condition, it can serve as an accurate predictor of personhood. The thesis posits that personhood is an achievement rather than an inherent state, facilitated by interactions within a social framework that refine these rational …
Cancer Heterogeneity And Mitochondrial-Targeted Therapies In Cancer Cachexia, Francielly Morena Clark
Cancer Heterogeneity And Mitochondrial-Targeted Therapies In Cancer Cachexia, Francielly Morena Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer Cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial and complex syndrome affecting up to 80% of cancer patients and contributing to approximately 40% of cancer-related deaths. Given its relationship with patients' quality of life and prognosis, there has been increasing emphasis on understanding the underlying mechanisms of CC using pre-clinical models. However, the mechanisms of cachexia vary depending on several factors, including tumor type, model, and biological variables such as sex. RNA-sequencing technology is a crucial tool for investigating CC heterogeneity, enabling the analysis of the transcriptome across different models, conditions, and sexes using publicly available data. Aim 1 of this dissertation …

L-Arabinose Induced Overexpression For Crystallographic Analysis Of The Spoiie Protein From Clostridioides Difficile, Danielle M. Maynard
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The SpoIIE protein plays a crucial role in the sporulation process of Clostridioides difficile, a pathogen responsible for severe gastrointestinal diseases. Understanding the structural and functional aspects of SpoIIE is pivotal for deciphering its role in sporulation and exploring its potential as a therapeutic target. This study investigates the impact of varying concentrations of L-arabinose on the overexpression of SpoIIE in C. difficile, aiming to optimize protein yield and purity for subsequent crystallization and structural determination via X-ray crystallography. Using a recombinant expression system in Escherichia coli, different concentrations of L-arabinose were employed to induce SpoIIE overexpression. Protein purification was …

Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) lameness is a major welfare issue for broiler production worldwide affecting approximately 1.5% of broilers over 42 days old. Excessive body weight gain causes mechanical stress on long bones, leading to micro-fractures. This condition induces a bacterial infection of fractures, resulting in bone necrosis and eventual BCO lameness. Increasing gut integrity and supporting Calcium metabolism contribute to the optimal bone structure and subsequently reduce BCO lameness. Probiotics thus provide an excellent strategy for alleviating BCO due to the improvement of intestinal integrity and barrier function. Accordingly, the present study investigated the lameness reduction through the …

Enhanced optical and infrared activity of subwavelength metal nanoparticles is key to their use in optoelectronics, spectroscopy, and sensing. The present work compared spectra of nanosphere dimers merged by centrifuging gold nanospheres with corresponding simulated nanoscale dimers. Geometric features of the nanosphere dimers were related to corresponding optical and near-infrared activity through simulation. Differences in optical and infrared activity of the nanosphere dimers were largely attributable to changes in the radius of the nanosphere and the radius of the conductive junction between merged nanospheres. The features observed in the experimental spectra were attributed to a select number of dimers exhibiting …

Processing of berries usually degrades anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenolics and diminishes antioxidant activity. In Colombia, jelly produced from the fruit of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz is a popular product among consumers. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of jelly processing steps on bioactive components. Analysis of anthocyanins (ACNs) and non-anthocyanin phenolics was performed via HPLC-PDA. Antioxidant activity was assessed by the ORACFL method. The pulping step had the highest impact on ACNs, whose total content was significantly higher in the pomace (747.6 ± 59.2 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside (cyn 3-glu)/100 g) than in the pulp (102.7 …

Rice production is inherently risky and volatile, and farmers in Bangladesh face a wide range of risks, including weather, pest and disease attacks, interruptions to input supply, and market-associated risks. Moreover, poor farm households often perceive risks in adopting new technology, even though it could improve productivity and food security. Such households are thus caught in a “risk-induced trap” that precludes them from realizing the benefits of technological innovation. Extension service is one way to help farmers improve risk management skills and escape risk-induced traps, but there is limited empirical analysis of its impact in Bangladesh. The objective of …

He Got The Car, She Got The . . . Future Kids? The Necessity Of Contemporaneous Consent In Certain Embryo Custody Disputes, Taryn Bewley
Arkansas Law Notes
New reproductive technology has created new questions that lawmakers must answer. Do surrogates have a right to the babies they deliver? Is it right to genetically select your future children? Should people be allowed to continually make embryos until they make an embryo of a girl—as Paris Hilton has done through seven rounds of IVF? Will legal analysis be changed by the possibility of making an embryo with genetic material from two members of the same sex? Yet, perhaps the most basic question has yet to truly be answered: if an embryo’s creators cannot come to an agreement, who gets …

Recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have devastated poultry production across the United States, with more than 77 million birds culled in 2022–2024 alone. Wild waterfowl, including various invasive species, host numerous pathogens, including highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV), and have been implicated as catalysts of disease outbreaks among native fauna and domestic birds. In major poultry-producing states like Arkansas, USA, where the poultry sector is responsible for significant economic activity (>$4 billion USD in 2022), understanding the risk of invasive waterfowl interactions with domestic poultry is critical. Here, we assessed the risk of invasive waterfowl-poultry interaction …

Seeing Race & Sexuality: Child Welfare & Forced Labor, Annie Isabel Fukushima, Jens Nilson, Kaden Richards
Arkansas Law Review
This Article examines how child welfare responds to children who are forced to labor through a case study of California. We use an intersectional framework to argue that a conceptualization of current sociolegal responses to human trafficking cannot be delinked from racialized and sexualized forms of governmentality. In using an intersectional framework, we hope to draw upon intersectionality as a way to “point[] to the ways that structural inequality, persistent disadvantages, and structural abandonment are some of the root causes of microlevel violent interactions and at the same time influence how effective macrolevel justice policies are at responding to or …

Metal phosphide-containing materials have emerged as a potential candidate of nonprecious metal-based catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While it is known that metal phosphide undergoes structural evolution, considerable debate persists regarding the effects of dynamics on the surface activation and morphological stability of the catalysts. In this study, we synthesize NiPx-FeOx core–shell nanocatalysts with an amorphous NiPx core designed for enhanced OER activity. Using ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we elucidate the local structural changes as a function of the cyclic voltammetry cycles. Our studies suggest that the presence of corner-sharing octahedra in the …

Data acquisitions in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are inherently slow due to sequential acquisition protocol. Image reconstruction from under-sampled data is posed as an inverse problem in traditional model-based learning paradigms. Recent data-centric learning frameworks such as deep learning (DL) frameworks are data hungry, and demand a large, labeled training data sets. To address the lack of large training datasets, in MRI reconstructions, researchers approach the problem in two ways: (1) unsupervised method where the model is trained without the presence of fully sampled data. (2) using a method that efficiently use the limited dataset for training purpose. In this …

In 2014, a trans teenager named Leelah Alcorn posted a suicide letter to her public Tumblr account. Almost a decade later, in 2023, Eden Knight, another young trans woman, posted a suicide letter to her public Twitter account. Both suicide letters went viral and inspired memorial hashtags on the platforms where they initially circulated. In this article, I identify similarities between the cases, conceptualizing both as rituals of commemoration aimed toward restoring value to trans lives lost too soon. My analysis shows how ordinary users leverage the connective affordances embedded within popular social media platforms to sustain structured, value-laden acts …

Camera traps are a powerful, practical, and non-invasive method used widely to monitor animal communities and evaluate management actions. However, camera trap arrays can generate thousands to millions of images that require significant time and effort to review. Computer vision has emerged as a tool to accelerate this image review process. We propose a multi-step, semi-automated workflow which takes advantage of site-specific and generalizable models to improve detections and consists of (1) automatically identifying and removing low-quality images in parallel with classification into animals, humans, vehicles, and empty, (2) automatically cropping objects from images and classifying them (rock, bait, empty, …

This study focuses on improving the functionalities of milk protein concentrate (MPC) using a nonthermal plasma jet and plasma-activated water (PAW) with atmospheric air and nitrogen as source gases. The 5% and 10% MPC dispersions were directly treated with a plasma jet, and PAW was used to make the MPC dispersions. The dispersions were analyzed for changes in protein structure and functional properties. The treatment altered the secondary structure of MPC protein structure by increasing β-components and changing the order of random coils. The solubility of the PAW-treated 5% protein dispersions doubled due to plasma-induced modification of hydrophilic and covalent …

The development of an ideal membrane for membrane distillation (MD) is of the utmost importance. Enhancing the efficiency of MD by adding nanoparticles to or onto a membrane’s surface has drawn considerable attention from the scientific community. It is crucial to thoroughly examine state-of-the-art nanomaterials-enabled MD membranes with desirable properties, as they greatly enhance the efficiency and reliability of the MD process. This, in turn, opens up opportunities for achieving a sustainable water–energy–environment nexus. By introducing carbon-based nanomaterials into the membrane’s structure, the membrane gains excellent separation abilities, resistance to various feed waters, and a longer lifespan. Additionally, the use …

Background
Organisms frequently experience environmental stresses that occur in predictable patterns and combinations. For wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast growing in natural environments, cells may experience high osmotic stress when they first enter broken fruit, followed by high ethanol levels during fermentation, and then finally high levels of oxidative stress resulting from respiration of ethanol. Yeast have adapted to these patterns by evolving sophisticated “cross protection” mechanisms, where mild ‘primary’ doses of one stress can enhance tolerance to severe doses of a different ‘secondary’ stress. For example, in many yeast strains, mild osmotic or mild ethanol stresses cross protect against severe …

The salamander, Ambystoma annulatum, is considered a “species of special concern” in the state of Arkansas, USA, due to its limited geographic range, specialized habitat requirements and low population size. Although metazoan parasites have been documented in this salamander species, neither its native protists nor microbiome have yet been evaluated. This is likely due to the elusive nature and under-sampling of the animal. Here, we initiate the cataloguing of microbial associates with the identification of a new heterlobosean species, Naegleria lustrarea n. sp. (Excavata, Discoba, Heterolobosea), isolated from feces of an adult A. annulatum.

Of relevance to the off-target movement of herbicides in Arkansas is the drift of rice herbicides in the state’s agricultural landscape, where aerial application of herbicides is common, raising the prima facie question of the risk of damage to other sensitive crops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of corn to postemergence applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl or quinclorac, which were applied directly to the crop at low rates (0.78 or 1.56 to 12.5% of the normal use rate for labeled crops). This was investigated through three site-year field experiments conducted in Fayetteville (2020 and 2021) and Tillar …

Collective cell migration is a model for nonequilibrium biological dynamics, which is important for morphogenesis, pattern formation, and cancer metastasis. The current understanding of cellular collective dynamics is based primarily on cells moving within a 2D epithelial monolayer. However, solid tumors often invade surrounding tissues in the form of a stream-like 3D structure, and how biophysical cues are integrated at the cellular level to give rise to this collective streaming remains unclear. Here, it is shown that cell cycle-mediated bioenergetics drive a forward advective flow of cells and energy to the front to support 3D collective invasion. The cell division …
