A Stereotaxic Atlas Of The Brain Of The Chick (Gallus Domesticus), Wayne J. Kuenzel, Manju Masson

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nine brains taken from chicks two weeks of age were used for the development of this atlas. Each chick was first anesthetized with an intravenous (IV) injection of Chloropent2 (1.8 ml/kg). Chicks were then perfused via the heart with 90 ml physiological saline followed by 90 ml Heidenhain's3 solution. Each head was then positioned in a stereotaxic instrument as described in the previous section and three stainless steel (SS) insect pins (#2) were implanted in each brain at known coordinates. In the case of the brains used to construct the cross- sectional atlas plates, two pins were implanted horizontal to …

Survival And Growth Two Years After Control Of Herbaceous Competitors In Newly Planted Seedlings Of Loblolly Pine, Jimmie L. Yeiser, J. W. Boyd Jan 1988

Survival And Growth Two Years After Control Of Herbaceous Competitors In Newly Planted Seedlings Of Loblolly Pine, Jimmie L. Yeiser, J. W. Boyd

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Early or late over-the-top applications of herbicides were used to control herbaceous competition in machine planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L) seedlings at two locations in a pasture near Alleene and hand planted seedlings on a bedded site near Fouke. Sites were selected for diverse competitors. None of the treatments controlled weeds for the entire growing season. Only glyphosate + sulfometuron methyl produced seedling survival and growth below the check plots. The best over-the-top treatments were sulfometuron methyl alone or sulfometuron methyl + hexazinone.

Status Of The Instream Flow Issue In Arkansas, 1987, Stephen P. Filipek, William E. Keith, John Giese

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Expansion of Arkansas' population with concurrent increases in the state's domestic, industrial, and agricultural water uses and possible out-of-state diversion are placing substantial demands on the state's water resources. In an attempt to address this growing concern, Act 1051 (1985) of the Arkansas legislature was passed requiring the determination of present and future state water needs. A specific area of this mandate was the quantification of instream flow requirements. Basic instream flow needs are maintenance of the aquatic ecosystem and dependent riparian environment. Flow reservation may compliment other instream uses such as recreation, navigation, water quality, and groundwater recharge. However, …

Effects Of Temperature And Crowding On The Pathogenicity Of Edwardsiella Ictaluri In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Sharon L. Johnson, Lawrence W. Hinck Jan 1985

Effects Of Temperature And Crowding On The Pathogenicity Of Edwardsiella Ictaluri In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Sharon L. Johnson, Lawrence W. Hinck

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Channel catfish were injected with Edwardsiella ictaluri and stocked at increasing temperatures and densities. Bacteriological examination of kidney, liver and spleen revealed the greatest numbers of organisms in fish from the highest temperature and stocking density tested. Survival time was the shortest for fish held at the highest temperature and stocking density. Increased temperature and crowding were directly proportional to the number of organisms recovered from the organs and inversely proportional to fish survival time.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus crude venom was separated into two fractions by Concanavalin A Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography. The proteins binding to Con A exhibited phosphomonoesterase (orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.2), phosphodiesterase, 5'-nucleotidase (5'-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.5), phospholipase A(phosphatidate 2-acylhydrolase EC 3.1.1 .4), hyaluronidase (hyaluronate glycanohydrolase EC 3.2.1 d), N-benzoyl-L-arginine ethyl esterase, p-toluenesulfonyl-L-arginine methyl esterase, L-amino acid oxidase (L-amino acid: 02 oxidoreductase [deaminating] EC 1.4.3.2), and caseinolytic activities. Thrombin-like and NAD nucleosidase (5'-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.5) activities were not observed. The crude venom and the fraction containing the glycoproteins which bound to Con A were fractionated by DEAE Sephadex A-50 ion …

Effects Of Litter On Aquatic Macrophyte Germination And Growth, Mark F. Carter, Forrest E. Lane, James B. Grace Jan 1985

Effects Of Litter On Aquatic Macrophyte Germination And Growth, Mark F. Carter, Forrest E. Lane, James B. Grace

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In Arkansas, during seasonal drought periods, lake water levels drop leaving exposed mudflats which are primary sites for seedling establishment. Commonly, these exposed mudflats are partially covered with decomposing litter from previous stands of aquatic plants. In this study, aqueous leachates from the litter of four macrophytes, Eleocharis quadrangulata, Justicia americana, Polygonum lapathifolium, and Potamogeton nodosus, were used to test for chemical interference with germination and seedling growth. Only Justicia americana leachate was found to affect the growth of several of the test species. The potential for chemical interference by Justicia litter was evaluated further using extracts of acidified leachate. …

Repair Of Lethal Damage Induced In A Hamster X Amphibian Hybrid Tissue Culture Cell Line By Ultraviolet Light And Gamma Ray, Susan Kulp, Ann Page, H. Gaston Griggs Jan 1985

Repair Of Lethal Damage Induced In A Hamster X Amphibian Hybrid Tissue Culture Cell Line By Ultraviolet Light And Gamma Ray, Susan Kulp, Ann Page, H. Gaston Griggs

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A hybrid cell line was formed by fusing cells from two established vertebrate tissue culture cell lines (V79B1 hamster and A84 Xenopus), which were known to differ substantially in resistance to some radiation-induced lesions and in associated repair potential. Ultraviolet and gamma ray dose-survival relations were then determined and analyzed for the three cell lines, primarily to compare the radiosensitivity (Do dose) of the hybrid line with that of each parental line for each radiation. Further experimentation was conducted to determine the extent to which observed differences in these Do doses could be attributed to interactions of the combined parental …

Fluctuations And Relationships Of Selected Physiochemical Parameters In Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas, 1975-1982, John D. Rickett, Robert L. Watson Jan 1985

Fluctuations And Relationships Of Selected Physiochemical Parameters In Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas, 1975-1982, John D. Rickett, Robert L. Watson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Annual and seasonal fluctuations and relationships are described for discharge, turbidity, chloride, total hardness, conductivity and suspended solids over an eight-year period in Dardanelle Reservoir. The parameters fluctuated rather widely primarily in response to seasonal patterns of rainfall. Chloride and conductivity were related and generally fluctuated together as did turbidity and suspended solids. Hardness appeared to vary independently of the others prior to 1979 then varied more closely with chloride after March 1979. Inherent differences between the Illinois Bayou arm and the main Arkansas River sections complicated the precise identification of any overall impact of power plant operation. No significant …

Toward A Concise Definition And Perspective For Biology, Arthur V. Brown, Kristine Basinger Brown Jan 1984

Toward A Concise Definition And Perspective For Biology, Arthur V. Brown, Kristine Basinger Brown

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The content of introductory biology courses at the high school and college levels are currently being re-examined. Many biological educators favor revision of the high school biology courses to a format that directly addresses current social issues to "promote good citizenship". We believe it would be more meaningful to teach the fundamental principles of biology, the study of living systems. Properly defining biology, by defining a living system, should help identify important topics to include in a basic biology course. Emphasis should be placed on subjects which would contribute most to the development of a basic understanding of how all …

Some Studies On Introducing Castilleja Coccinea, Indian Paintbrush, Into Prairie Vegetation, Robert D. Wright Jan 1984

Some Studies On Introducing Castilleja Coccinea, Indian Paintbrush, Into Prairie Vegetation, Robert D. Wright

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Indian paintbrush, absent from many prairie remnants in Arkansas, behaves as a biennial in certain central Arkansas prairies, growing as a small rosette one season and flowering the next. It is known to be an indiscriminate root parasite. Field sowings were made in October, March and June. Annual change in population size was monitored for one of these sowings. Laboratory studies of germination were conducted to investigate the effects of light, temperature, water potential, and host species. Haustorial connections to host roots were examined. Based on these studies, a strategy for establishing the species in prairie was developed.

Distribution Of Naegleria Fowleri In Selected Northeast Arkansas Lakes, Robert Dean Evans, Lawrence W. Hinck

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Seven northeast Arkansas recreational lakes were examined for the presence of pathogenic and nonpathogenic Naegleria fowleri. Cultural differentiation and microscopic morphology were used as species determining tests, while mouse pathogenicity tests were conducted to determine virulence. Only one isolate met all criteria utilized for definite identification of Naegleria fowleri, although Naegleria type organisms were found in all of the lakes. None of the isolates were pathogenic in mice.

Potential Of Utilizing Scrap Processed Cheese As A Major Ration Component For Channel Catfish, Calvin J. Haskins, Scott H. Newton Jan 1980

Potential Of Utilizing Scrap Processed Cheese As A Major Ration Component For Channel Catfish, Calvin J. Haskins, Scott H. Newton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Three cages (0.9 m³) were stocked with 200 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque, fingerlings (73.7 g avg.) in a 1.5 hectare pond. Two cheese rations were formulated and fed to the catfish; the first consisting of cheese, oil, and vitamin C (C + VC)and the second consisting of cheese, cottonseed meal, oil, trace minerals, and vitamins (CC + VM). A commercial trout ration (TC) was fed as a control. High mortalities occurred in the C + VC diet, thus resulting in premature removal of that cage from the study (after 86 days). A sample of 50 fish from the two …

Effect Of Cold Shock On The Metabolism Of Trichomonas Gallinae, James J. Daly Jan 1980

Effect Of Cold Shock On The Metabolism Of Trichomonas Gallinae, James J. Daly

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The influence of cold (4°C) used to prepare cells for metabolic investigations was examined with Trichomonas gallinae in this study. Cells washed with cold diluent in a refrigerated centrifuge were found to be less stimulated in their gas production at 37°C when exposed to glucose or maltose than cells washed at room temperature conditions. Such cold-prepared cells had higher initial glycogen contents after washing, faster endogenous glycogen degradation rates when incubated at 37 °C, but lower glycogen synthesis in the presence of glucose or maltose when compared to cells not prepared in the cold. However, uptake of glucose and maltose …

Self-Perceived Health And Outlook Among The Rural Elderly, Diana M. Danforth, Mary Jo Grinstead-Schneider, Donald E. Voth Jan 1979

Self-Perceived Health And Outlook Among The Rural Elderly, Diana M. Danforth, Mary Jo Grinstead-Schneider, Donald E. Voth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Differences in life outlook and self-perceived health often attributed to age differences among the elderly were found to be more accurately explained by education. The young-old (62-74 years) and the old-old (75 years and older) were compared among 495 elderly in two rural counties in western Arkansas. The old-old were more likely than the young-old to perceive their health as better than that of others their age. But when six variables including age were entered into a predictive model for self-perceived health, differences were explained by education. That is, those with better educations rated their health more positively. There was …

The Effects Of Heavy Metals On Algae Populations In A South Central Reservoir, Richard L. Meyer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The present investigation examines seasonal variations of algal assemblages in a south-central reservoir, Lake Fayetteville, Arkansas, in an attempt to evaluate the role of various trace metals in relation to these seasonal variations. Iron, manganese, cobalt, copper, lead and zinc concentrations were evaluated for the period of one year from March, 1976 to March, 1977 with concomitant examination of alga] assemblages. In addition to collection of this material, correlations between specific taxa and metals in the water fraction have been evaluated. A detailed literature review dealing with the role of micronutrients in various algal groups has been discussed by Rice …

Taste-Masking: Function Of Exaggerated Prandial Drinking In Desalivate Mice, Richard C. Lewis Jan 1978

Taste-Masking: Function Of Exaggerated Prandial Drinking In Desalivate Mice, Richard C. Lewis

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Taste thresholds for the bitter compound sucrose octaacetate (SOA) were elevated by desalivation in mice. Thresholds were determined for control and experimental animals both before and after ligation of all salivary ducts. There was a significant increase in SOA thresholds in the desalivate mice, and the pre- to post-operative differences in threshold between the control and experimental groups were significant. The altered response to SOA by desalivate mice is shown to be due to the assumption of a prandial pattern of drinking as a result of desalivation. This conclusion is based on experiments with wet mash which failed to show …

Attraction Of Aerial Insects As A Fish Food Supplement, Andrew J. Merkowsky, Ambus J. Handcock, Scott H. Newton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Insect populations over a 1.2 hectare southeast Arkansas livestock pond were sampled to consider the possibility of their use as a fish food supplement. A commercial insect attraction unit was suspended above the pond, and attracted insects were collected. Insect populations were sampled 3-4 nights each month, January-December, 1976. Insects collected were identified and analyses were performed to determine nutritional composition and pesticide content. Insect samples were variable, however, 62% of the insects identified were in the Order Diptera and 97% of these were in the Family Chironomidae. Nutritional analyses revealed insects were more than 60% crude protein. Pesticide analysis …

Role Of Olfaction In "Taste-Aversion" To Ptc In Mice, Richard C. Lewis Jan 1977

Role Of Olfaction In "Taste-Aversion" To Ptc In Mice, Richard C. Lewis

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The objective of most taste research involving choice is to eliminate from the experiment all cues to the animal except those that are strictly gustatory. Among those potentially confounding cues, one of the most obvious is olfaction, although it often remains uncontrolled in taste experiments. The present report clearly demonstrates the role played by olfaction in a discrimination experiment with C57B1/6 and CFW mice as regards their response to phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) when paired with water. The results have implications for conclusions drawn by other investigators who have attributed differences in PTC sensitivity in mice to taste alone.

Yolk-Periblast Junction In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Claudia F. Bailey Jan 1977

Yolk-Periblast Junction In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Claudia F. Bailey

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The yolk of teleost eggs becomes covered with a syncytial periblast during embryonic development. Nutrients must be transported through the periblast before they are available to the embryo. Tranmission electron micrographs of thin sections and of freeze-fractured replicas show a number of features at the yolk-periblast junction which may be correlated with yolk transport. These features include vesicle formation and exchange, channelization and interdigitation.
