Enzymes In Heloderma Horridum Venom, S. A. Murphy, Bob D. Johnson, D. H. Sifford
Enzymes In Heloderma Horridum Venom, S. A. Murphy, Bob D. Johnson, D. H. Sifford
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A mixture of venom and saliva from the lizard Heloderma horridum was analyzed for esterase, phosphomonoesterase, phosphodiesterase, 5'nucleotidase, and protease activities. Hydrolysis of N-benzoyl-L-arginine ethyl ester occurred at a pH optimum between pH 8.6 and 9.1 with a maximum activity of 452 units per mg per min. Hydrolysis of ptoluenesulfonyl-L-arginine methyl ester occurred at a pH optimum between pH 8.1 and 8.5 with a maximum of only 36 units per mg per min. One mg of the venom mixture liberated 9.3 μM of p nitrophenol from p-nitrophenyl phosphate per minute at an optimum pH between 8.2 and 8.3. Over a …
Influence Of Dietary Fats And Carbohydrates On Lipid Metabolism In Male And Female Rats, Marjorie Ellen Fitch
Influence Of Dietary Fats And Carbohydrates On Lipid Metabolism In Male And Female Rats, Marjorie Ellen Fitch
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Effects of dietary fats and carbohydrates on lipid metabolism in rats were studied. Male and female 4-week-old rats were divided into 8 groups and fed 4 fat-carbohydrate combinations (beef tallow or safflower oil, each with either sucrose or rice starch). After 4 weeks, animals were killed by exsanguination through the abdominal aorta and livers were removed. Plasma and liver cholesterol and phospholipids were determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Liver moisture, protein, and lipid and the fatty acid composition of the total liver lipid were determined quantitatively. Variations in growth, food efficiency, and lipid metabolism, particularly as manifested by the fatty acid …
Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase Ii, Richard L. Meyer
Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase Ii, Richard L. Meyer
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Selected chemical, physical and biological parameters were determined for a man-made lake, Beaver Lake, on the White River of Arkansas and Missouri. The research program determined the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the temporal and spatial distribution of the algal subcommunities. It was determined that the epipelic, epilithic, epizooic and metaphytic subcommunities had little influence on the euplanktonic subcommunity. The relationship between the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the biochromes chlorophyll-a, -b, and -c and the phytoplankton species clustered into biochrome sets is discussed. The temporal and spatial distributional patterns of temperature, oxygen, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, orthophosphate-P and silicates are described …
A Managerial Planning Model: An Application To The Farm-Cultured Catfish Industry In Determining The Characteristics Of Processed Farm-Cultured Catfish Consumers In Little Rock And North Little Rock, Arkansas, Argus Kenneth Pippin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of the study were: (1) to evaluate the processed farm-cultured catfish business in its embryonic stage during 1968 in terms of a systematic managerial planning model (MPH); (2) to focus on the managerial strategy of market segmentation and determine the relationships between the number of processed farm-cultured catfish sales and selected economic and socio-economic determinants or consumer market behavior. From the evaluation of the processed farm-cultured catfish business as it existed in 1968, it was suggestive that the planning process was not implemented thoroughly. Several areas exhibited weaknesses or unfavorable influence that were deterrents to the success of …

Zinc Nutrition Of Rice Plants As Influenced By Seed Germinated In Zinc Solutions, Narsimaha R. Kasireddy, Lyell F. Thompson
Zinc Nutrition Of Rice Plants As Influenced By Seed Germinated In Zinc Solutions, Narsimaha R. Kasireddy, Lyell F. Thompson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In recent years a physiological disorder of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings growing in soils high in exchangeable calcium has been diagnosed as zinc deficiency. Calculations show that less than 30 g of zinc is needed to satisfy the nutrition of a hectare of 6-8-wk-old rice plants. Rice seed was soaked and germinated in dilute solutions of zinc ethylenediamine tetraacetate, zinc sulfate and zinc lignosulfonate prior to planting in greenhouse pots containing a zinc-deficient soil. The rice plants grown from the zinc-treated seed produced more growth and sorbed more zinc than rice plants grown from untreated seed.

Physics And Environmental Studies, Joe M. Guenter
Physics And Environmental Studies, Joe M. Guenter
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
To further implement the course curriculum for the Earth Science major and to constructively channel the current interest and concern with the environmental problems, the Department of Physical Science at the University of Arkansas at Monticello introduced a course entitled Environmental Studies this past spring. As it was necessary to offer both a general education Elementary Physics course in addition to the new course, it was decided to combine the two courses and use an approach similar to that of Edwin Marston, Queens College, Flushing, New York. Problems of conservation, pollution, and environmental quality were considered by the class whose …

Glyptostrobus Europaeus (Brongn.) Heer In Arkansas, Eugene B. Wittlake
Glyptostrobus Europaeus (Brongn.) Heer In Arkansas, Eugene B. Wittlake
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Glyptostrobus europaeus (Brongn.) Heer, a fossil gymnosperm is found at a few locations in central North America, in deposits of the Eocene. This work cites previously reported localities and reports a new site at Hooker, Arkansas. This deposit appears to be the most abundant for specimens of G. europaeus in the Eocene of North America. History of the Hooker site, characteristics of the living species G. pensilis (Abel) Koch and G. europaeus is presented. Worldwide distribution of both species through time, is discussed. Specimens of many parts of the life cycle of G. europaeus are recorded and illustrated.
