Effect Of Media Constituents On In Vitro Culturing Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata) Shoot Tip And Leaf Disk Explants, Mohanjeet S. Brar, Edwin J. Anderson, Teddy E. Morelock, Ronald W. Mcnew Jan 1997

Effect Of Media Constituents On In Vitro Culturing Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata) Shoot Tip And Leaf Disk Explants, Mohanjeet S. Brar, Edwin J. Anderson, Teddy E. Morelock, Ronald W. Mcnew

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cowpea is an important legume food crop that is commonly grown in Arkansas and numerous other southern states. The application of biotechnological approaches for the improvement of U.S. cowpea genotypes is currently not possible due to the lack of a regeneration and transformation system. Therefore, the first priority of our research efforts is the development of a plant regeneration system that will facilitate plant transformation studies. In an effort to optimize the media requirements for tissue culturing cowpea, we evaluated the in vitro response of shoot tip and leaf disk explants to various levels of Murashige and Skoog (MS) macro …

Female Reproductive Traits In Selected Arkansas Snakes, Stanley E. Trauth, Robert L. Cox, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Brian P. Butterfield, Anthony Holt Jan 1994

Female Reproductive Traits In Selected Arkansas Snakes, Stanley E. Trauth, Robert L. Cox, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Brian P. Butterfield, Anthony Holt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Female reproductive characteristics of 17 genera of Arkansas snakes (27 species and subspecies) were examined. Most of the snakes (n= 495) were collected over a 10-year span (1984-1993). Methods used to estimate clutch and/or litter size were as follows: 1) counts of previtellogenic ovarian follicles,2) counts of vitellogenic ovarian follicles,3) counts of oviductal eggs or embryos, 4) counts of corpora luteal scars, and 5) counts of neonates from egg clutches or litters. In several species, Method 1 tended to overestimate clutch size as determined by Method 2 by as much as 100% (e.g., in Diadophis punctatus, Elaphe obsoleta, and Lampropeltis …

Burying Beetle (Coleoptera: Silphidae, Nicrophorus) Surveys On Poteau Ranger District, Ouachita National Forest, Joseph C. Neal, M. Earl Stewart, Warren G. Montague

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Surveys for American burying beetles {Nicrophorus americanus Oliver) were conducted in west-central Arkansas on Poteau Ranger District of the Ouachita National Forest in1992 and 1993. A total of 2450 Nicrophorus specimens were captured in1098 trap nights. The most frequently captured specimens were N. orbicollis, N. tomentosus, and N. pustulatus. One specimen of N. americanus was also captures. Other species of beetles were also trapped and identified in this survey. Habitats sampled were primarily well-drained uplands with proposed or recent harvests of shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata). It appears that these habitats may not harbor extensive populations of N. americanus onPoteau RD.

Reproductive Cycles In Two Arkansas Skinks In The Genus Eumeces (Sauria: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth Jan 1994

Reproductive Cycles In Two Arkansas Skinks In The Genus Eumeces (Sauria: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reproductive cycles of the southern coal skink (Eumeces anthracinus pluvialis) and the five-lined skink (E. fasciatus) were studied by examining museum specimens collected in Arkansas. Histological preparations of testes from each species revealed eight spermatogenic stages. Male coal skinks produced sperm by late February, at least one month before male five-lined skinks. Height of the testicular cycle (maximum sperm production-stage 6 = spermiogenesis) in E. a. pluvialis occurred in March and early April, whereas in E. fasciatus, spermiogenesis reached a peak in May. Testicular recrudescence began in late May in E. a. pluvialis and mid-July in E. fasciatus. The reproductive …

Collective Leadership In Contemporary Irish Nationalism: The Writing Of Gerry Adams, Kathryn Cantrell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tracing its origins to Theobald Wolfe Tone's United Irishmen, founded in Belfast on October 18, 1791, Irish Republicanism has evolved from its original anti-sectarian, Lockean principles as represented by Tone1 to a modern movement encompassing national self-determination, antisectarianism, cultural nationalism, radical social policies, the politics of electoralism, as well as support for the armed struggle dedicated to British withdrawal from Northern Ireland and a united Ireland. Today, the modern Irish Republican movement is best represented by the political party Sinn Fein. The party's present leadership, headed by its president Gerry Adams, has changed the politics and strategies of Sinn Fein …

Effect Of Light, Nitrogen, And Water Management On Rice (Oryza Sativa) Tolerance To Fenoxaprop, Roy J. Smith Jr., Aurora M. Baltazar, Paolo Nastasi Jan 1993

Effect Of Light, Nitrogen, And Water Management On Rice (Oryza Sativa) Tolerance To Fenoxaprop, Roy J. Smith Jr., Aurora M. Baltazar, Paolo Nastasi

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The effect of light intensity, nitrogen (N), and water management on rice (Oryza sativa cv. 'Newbonnet' and 'Lemont') tolerance to fenoxaprop {(+)-2-[4[(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyl)oxy]phenoxy]propanoic acid} was determined in two field studies at the Rice Research and Extension Center, Stuttgart, AR, in 1988 and 1989. In one study, 'Newbonnet' rice was treated with 0.22 kgai ha-1fenoxaprop at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 28 days after N application and flooding. Moderate to severe foliar chlorosis, stunting, and stand and yield reductions occurred when fenoxaprop was applied within 7 days after N application and flooding. None to slight injury or yield reduction …

Reproductive Performance Of Female White-Tailed Deer On Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Nelson Jan 1991

Reproductive Performance Of Female White-Tailed Deer On Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Nelson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Aspects of the reproductive biology of female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge were investigated by examining the reproductive tracts of 121 deer harvested during the 1985-90 archery seasons. The presence of corpora albicantia in yearlings suggested that 27% of female fawns conceived, producing a mean of 1.0 ova/breeding fawn. Pregnancy rates among yearlings and adults averaged 94% and 97%, respectively. Ovulation rates averaged 1.4 and 2.0 ova/female among yearlings and adults. Some females were ovulating in early-October, but the earliest conceptions occurred during the last week of October. The peak breeding period for yearlings and …

Analysis Of The Fall And Winter Diet Of The Bobcat In Eastern Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel Jan 1990

Analysis Of The Fall And Winter Diet Of The Bobcat In Eastern Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Food habits of the bobcat (Felis rufus) in eastern Arkansas were examined based on stomach contents of 148 specimens. Rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus and S. aquaticus) were the primary food source for males, females, and kittens. Rice rats (Oryzomys palustris), nutria (Myocastor coypus), and several species of waterfowl are first reported as food of bobcats in Arkansas. Cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethica) were more common in bobcat diets in eastern versus western Arkansas. Adult males did not use smaller prey but this food source was common, in kittens; females were intermediate in their use of smaller prey.

Mermithid Nematodes: Sem Observations Comparing Hexamethyldisilazane And Critical Point Drying Methods, William R. Bowen, Christopher C. Hemann, Arthur A. Johnson, Barry H. Good Jan 1990

Mermithid Nematodes: Sem Observations Comparing Hexamethyldisilazane And Critical Point Drying Methods, William R. Bowen, Christopher C. Hemann, Arthur A. Johnson, Barry H. Good

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Morphological features of mermithid nematodes (Mermithidae) were studied with scanning electron microscopy, using hexamethyldisilazane-air drying in comparison with critical point drying via liquid carbon dioxide. Although general morphologic preservation of both HMDS-dried and CP-dried specimens was similar, structural features of the complex cuticle and internal organization were more easily resolved at higher magnifications in the HMDS-dried nematodes. These features include the superficial cuticular annulations, the fibrillar inner cuticle and peg-like microtrabeculae. The previously undescribed microtrabeculae are of special interest since they may facilitate an interaction of the mermithid (and perhaps nameatodes in general) musculature with its body wall that, at …

Characterization Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Roots Versus Root Pulling Resistance As Selection Indices For Draught Tolerance, Mazo Price, R. H. Dilday, Arthur L. Allen Jan 1989

Characterization Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Roots Versus Root Pulling Resistance As Selection Indices For Draught Tolerance, Mazo Price, R. H. Dilday, Arthur L. Allen

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A technique described as Root Pulling Resistance (RPR) was used to evaluate genotypic differences in root growth and development of 50 rice germplasm accessions and cultivars. Several root characteristics in rice are associated with drought tolerance and avoidance capability of plants. The RPR measurements showed a significant positive correlation with maximum root length (r=0.69), root thickness (r=0.75), branching number (r=0.75), and root dry weight (r= 0.82). Rice genotypes that had a high RPR value were identified as having longer, thicker, and denser root systems. The data indicated that high RPR measurements are strongly correlated with greater root penetration. Munji Sufaid …

Dental Pathology In Selected Carnivores From Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, J. D. Wilhide, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The occurrence and kinds of dental pathology in wild carnivore populations in Arkansas were investigated through examination of 1295 skulls of bobcat (Felis rufus), river otter (Lutra canadensis), gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), coyote (Canis latrans), and raccoon (Procyon lotor). Pulpitis or abscesses in broken or otherwise exposed teeth were noted in all species, but bobcats had the fewest exposures while otter and gray foxhad the most. Osteomyelitis occurred in all species except the bobcat. Caries were noted in the coyote, raccoon, and gray fox. Otter and coyote had alveolar thinning, and coyote had enamel dysplasia and maxillary sinusitis.
