Introduction: African American (AA) adults living in rural, Southeastern communities experience disproportionately high rates of obesity-related chronic diseases. Many factors contributing to this health disparity are related to negative Social Determinants of Health that have individual and community level impacts. Nutrition knowledge (NK) and food skills (FS) are forms of health literacy that have been understudied in rural-dwelling AA adults. Understanding their relationships with self-perceived diet competence, autonomy, motivations, as well as diet behaviors and health outcomes could inform the development of future health research and policy. Low income, pregnant and postpartum women who misuse opioids in the state of Alabama face potentially life-threatening challenges when seeking substance misuse treatment and recovery support services. Our study used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach to explore gateways, barriers, and facilitators to opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment for pregnant and postpartum women in the state of Alabama. Surveys from 32 pregnant and postpartum individuals and in-depth interviews with 15 pregnant and postpartum individuals (four pregnant, four 0-6 months postpartum, four 7-12 months postpartum and three 13-18 months postpartum) were used to identify gateways, barriers, and facilitators to OUD treatment. Escherichia coli ClpB and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hsp104 are part of the Hsp100 family of proteins responsible for maintaining protein homeostasis in a cell during heat-stress conditions. Structurally, ClpB and Hsp104, in their active state, assemble into hexameric ring complexes with a hollow axial channel. Functionally, these enzymes are hypothesized to couple energy from ATP binding and hydrolysis to unfold protein substrates and translocate them through their axial channel. However, the molecular mechanisms of protein unfolding and translocation catalyzed by both ClpB and Hsp104 are not well understood. The Relationship Between Molten Iron Chemistry Of A Cupola Furnace And Airborne Contaminants, Darkeya D. Rowe

The purpose of this research was to understand the potential relationship between the molten iron chemistry of a cupola furnace and airborne contaminants. Three-day air sampling was performed for the emissions of a cupola furnace using 37 mm mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filter cassettes at an iron foundry. The samples were analyzed for 21 elements and compounds by a commercial laboratory using the modified National Institude for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 7303, most of which were metals. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health and economic concern. Safe and effective treatments for T2D, including dietary approaches, are limited. Additionally, it remains unclear whether dietary carbohydrate quality or quantity matters more for managing T2D. Most nutrient-dense carbohydrate quality sources—such as fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains—come from plant foods and are recommended for people with T2D by the American Diabetes Association. Furthermore, when these food groups are combined into a dietary pattern, a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) diet is created. Natural fiber reinforced composites have garnered significant interest as potential substitutes for conventional materials because of their eco-friendly attributes and favorable physical and mechanical properties. Typically, natural fibers undergo chemical treatments to enhance their compatibility with the polymer matrix prior to composite production. However, these treatments primarily affect the surface of the fiber bundles and have a limited impact on the inner elementary fibers within the bundle. This essay highlights certain problems attending Whitehead’s metaphysics beginning with his ambiguous use of feeling, extending on to his dogmatic rejection of bifurcation due largely to his misunderstanding of Poincaré’s conventionalism, his mathematicizing, and his life-long commitment to logicism first envisioned in his and Bertrand Russell’s Principia Mathematica leading to naturalistic reductionism, and his ill-considered commitment to William James’s radical empiricism. It concludes that these difficulties should not be ascribed to process thought generally. A number of candidates provide process perspectives without this Whiteheadian baggage. In October 2025, the UAB Social Work Partnership (SWP) held listening sessions to understand the experiences, priorities, and advocacy needs of social workers across the UAB Enterprise. Sixty-two participants joined a virtual session or submitted written input, building on the 2024 Needs Assessment findings. Participants emphasized social workers’ essential role in linking healthcare with the social and environmental factors that shape patient outcomes, highlighting their impact on quality, safety, access, and equity. Key themes included the need for salary equity, transparent career ladders, and greater leadership representation. The high rate of incarceration in the United States presents a public issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. Empirical research has identified several adolescent risk factors linked to an increased likelihood of incarceration in adulthood, such as individual delinquency, peer delinquency, parental antisocial behaviors, and neighborhood disorder. However, much less is known about factors that might promote or protect against incarceration specifically. Factors associated with a reduced likelihood of delinquent behavior (a precursor to incarceration) include higher empathy, prosocial peers, parental nurturance, and neighborhood connectedness. From Portraits To Bathwater: Desire, Imitation, And Violence In The Picture Of Dorian Gray And Saltburn, Kylie Marie Golden

This thesis examines the cycle of imitation within queer male desire in The Picture of Dorian Gray and Saltburn, arguing that both texts depict an unsustainable pattern in which protagonists mold themselves after an idealized other, leading to obsession, violence, and self-destruction. While Oscar Wilde’s novel encodes queerness within aestheticism and moral decay, Emerald Fennell’s film reconfigures these themes through class ambition and performative sexuality. I explore how both texts present imitation as a dangerous mechanism through which male characters construct their identities, only to find that their self-fashioning is ultimately untenable. Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) is an ongoing issue that remains significant in the United States and the World. DFSA can be either proactive or opportunistic, where a victim becomes impaired and is unable to provide consent. Common drugs found in DFSA cases are ethanol and cannabis. However, alternative drugs are increasingly being used to incapacitate a victim and enable a sexual assault. These include tetrahydrozoline (THZ), commonly found in over-the-counter eye drops, such as Visine®. Drugs of abuse activate defined neuronal populations in brain reward structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which are thought to promote the enduring synaptic, circuit, and behavioral consequences of drug exposure. While the molecular and cellular effects arising from experience with drugs like cocaine are increasingly well understood, the mechanisms that sculpt NAc neuron participation are largely unknown. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, affecting approximately 1 million individuals in the United States. In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, complications such as arthralgia, sacroiliitis, and osteopenia may diminish physical fitness and exacerbate disease burden. Physical activity is a promising complementary, non-invasive strategy for managing Crohn’s disease, yet few studies have examined outcomes across the entire activity continuum from sedentary behavior to vigorous exercise. This dissertation aims to adapt Meyer’s Minority Stress Model to understand the interplay between minority stress, mental health, and sexual risk behaviors among middle-aged and older adults with and without HIV. The study utilizes data from the MACS WIHS Combined Cohort Study, focusing on adults aged 40 and older. It examines the relationships between perceived stress, psychosocial factors (depression, substance use, social support), and sexual risk behaviors, considering the impact of minority identities such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and HIV status. Continued persistence of high antigen levels in chronic viral infection and tumor settings induces molecular adaptations in CD8+ T cells that has been termed dysfunction or exhaustion. Although exhausted cells exhibit profound loss of effector functions, the exacerbated viral titer and tumor burden in the absence of these cells highlights their crucial role in maintaining the balance between tissue pathology and antigen clearance.
