Unexpected And Usual Breaks' Impact On Body Composition In College Athletes, Aston Dommel
Unexpected And Usual Breaks' Impact On Body Composition In College Athletes, Aston Dommel
All ETDs from UAB
Body composition is an important factor that determines athletic performance. At the elite level, margins of victory are narrow, with small changes in performance making the difference between victory and defeat. Changes in body composition affect performance, in both improvements and decrements. Athletes regularly experience breaks from structured activity and resources caused by expected circumstances (school breaks, off-season) and unexpected circumstances (injury, COVID-19). Due to differences in diet, physical activity, and other factors, breaks may cause changes in body composition that can hinder or help the athlete upon return to structured resources. Currently, there is a plethora of cross-sectional research …

Bridges, as long-life large structures, are considered a challenge in both their construction and maintenance. Since they are subjected to frequent cyclic loads normally and accidents occasionally, they are prone to possible damages during their lifetime. There-fore, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a must to avoid collapse or undesired closing. Various methods are used for that purpose that differ in their cost, efficiency, and ac-curacy. To obtain a better understating of the acceleration records of the bridge, the response of the vibrating beam subjected to stationary or moving mass is first studied by solving the equations of motion of both …
Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe
Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe
All ETDs from UAB
Tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as the failure of tooth development or odontogenesis. Prevalence of non-syndromic tooth agenesis has a reported range of 1.6-36.5% and varies by gender, ethnicity, and location. While tooth agenesis is well studied, information within ethnic groups requires further investigation. In this study, dental records of 3033 patients of the UAB School of Dentistry were evaluated to identify and categorize missing teeth by ethnicity and gender. Data analysis was conducted with Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, with a two-sided significance level of 0.05. An overall prevalence …

All ETDs from UAB
The aim of this study was to assess the association between the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the odds of ventilator associated events (VAEs). Retrospective analysis on prospectively collected data from 11,307 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital between January 2018 and June 2022 was used. Outcomes considered were Any VAE, IVAC/PVAP, PVAP and MDRO PVAP. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between COVID-19 and the outcome variables. When a patient has Prior COVID-19, the odds of getting any VAE during the delta period is …
Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin Pileata) In Alabama: Applications Of New Technologies, Forrest William Collins
Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin Pileata) In Alabama: Applications Of New Technologies, Forrest William Collins
All ETDs from UAB
The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin pileata, inhabits saltmarshes in the Northern Gulf of Mexico including along the coast of Alabama. Due to a variety of factors, this species has declined drastically in Alabama, and it is currently designated as a “species of highest conservation concern”. Understanding the ecology of this species is a prerequisite to the recovery of this population. The current thesis addresses the reproductive and foraging ecology of the Diamondback Terrapin in Alabama. This thesis combines the use of classic ecological methodologies with modern technologies. Between April 2019 to July 2022, wild nesting females were caught at a …
The Association Between Metabolically Healthy Obesity And Coronary Heart Disease Among Regards Study Participants, Kiara N. Aaron
The Association Between Metabolically Healthy Obesity And Coronary Heart Disease Among Regards Study Participants, Kiara N. Aaron
All ETDs from UAB
A major obstacle to the advancement of our understanding of the metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) phenotype is the inconsistent definition of metabolic health and obesity among studies. A harmonized definition of MHO in adults has been proposed based on the diagnosis of obesity (BMI > 30 k/m2) and meeting the cardio-metabolic criteria for triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), no antihypertensive treatment, fasting blood glucose, and no drug treatment with glucose-lowering agents. In addition, waist circumference can be associated with increased disease risk when WC is >94 cm in men and >80 cm in …
The Role Of Complement C3 In Iga Nephropathy, Sarah Elizabeth Coffee
The Role Of Complement C3 In Iga Nephropathy, Sarah Elizabeth Coffee
All ETDs from UAB
IgA nephropathy is an autoimmune disease characterized by glomerular IgA1- containing immunodeposits. These immunodeposits are enriched for aberrantly glycosylated IgA1 bound by IgG autoantibodies and contain complement component C3. Current research suggests a multi-hit disease pathogenesis: IgAN patients have elevated serum levels of IgA1 missing galactose in some hinge region O-glycans; this galactosedeficient IgA1 is recognized by IgG autoantibodies resulting in formation of circulating immune complexes; some of these complexes deposit in the glomeruli and induce kidney injury. As there is no disease-specific treatment, many patients progress to kidney failure. In this master’s thesis I sought to assess whether C3 …

Child Schooling And Other Factors Associated With Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Adults That Had Not Been Vaccinated In The Fall Of 2021, Ryan M. Fischer
All ETDs from UAB
Although COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy decreased noticeably over time during the first months of 2021, there was still a high degree of vaccine hesitancy in the United States at the time that the vaccine first became available to adolescents. Data from Phase 3.2 of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey (July 21 – October 11th, 2021) was used to conduct an ecological study on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy that investigated associations between vaccine hesitancy and socio-demographic characteristics as well as child school type (public school, private school, homeschool). Subjects that had not received a vaccine at the time of survey data …
Give Him To God, Brian Renninger
Give Him To God, Brian Renninger
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis is a fictional reimaging of my personal and familial experience with the opioid crisis in rural Alabama. Give Him to God is the story of Mary, a younger than average grandmother that has spent much of her early life within the grips of drug addiction. Her reluctant search for her son Jack, an addict himself and absent father to her granddaughter Liz, leads Mary through a reckoning of sorts as to where responsibility might lie in how their lives seem to repeat in an endless cycle of poverty and addiction. Within a sleepless few days, Mary confronts the …
The Ethos Of Donald Trump: Trump's Lack Of Presidential Decorum From 2016 Forward And Its Impact On American Politics, Nora M. Krall
The Ethos Of Donald Trump: Trump's Lack Of Presidential Decorum From 2016 Forward And Its Impact On American Politics, Nora M. Krall
All ETDs from UAB
In American politics, the concept of presidential decorum is upheld through the complexity of political and presidential rhetoric. When Donald Trump became president, he sought to break what standard decorum was in order to justify his desires as president. This breaking of decorum is complex in nature and is paired with mediatization, demagoguery, populism and collectivism, all of which are rhetorical strategies that challenge the norms within American democracy and in turn, have created a shift in what is considered presidential. Donald Trump seeks to utilize his personal ethos alongside these rhetorical methods to infiltrate multiple subsets of society, thus …

Conclusion: Specialists and general dentists use a …
Klf2 Regulation Of Glycocalyx Expression, Barrier Function, And Thromboinflammation In Human Lung Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Cambria O'Grady
Klf2 Regulation Of Glycocalyx Expression, Barrier Function, And Thromboinflammation In Human Lung Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Cambria O'Grady
All ETDs from UAB
KLF2 is an important transcription factor for maintaining vascular homeostasis. Its expression in endothelial cells is triggered by shear stress. The endothelial glycocalyx also plays a role in regulating vascular function, and prior work has shown that glycocalyx expression is affected by shear stress as well. However, the direct link between KLF2 and mechanisms that regulate glycocalyx synthesis has not been established. In the present study, we used human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs) to observe changes in glycocalyx expression, barrier function, and thromboinflammation caused by KLF2 overexpression. Lentiviral transduction was the method used for KLF2 overexpression, resulting in a …
Study Of Microrna-23a Cluster In Bone Formation, Revati Suryawanshi
Study Of Microrna-23a Cluster In Bone Formation, Revati Suryawanshi
All ETDs from UAB
The differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to pre-osteoblasts, lies upon various transcription factors and physiological signaling, but is also governed by the micro-RNA-23a cluster. The miR-23a cluster has miR-23a, miR-27a and miR-24-2 transcribed from a single promoter as a sole RNA primary transcript. Its effects have been observed in embryonic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and in cancer (1-2). It regulates the lineage commitment of MSCs. (3). With respect to bone formation, miR-23a cluster is involved MSCs commitment to and osteoblast maturation (4). Here, through in vivo and in vitro experiments, we report that knock down of microRNA-23a cluster …
Analysis Of Systems Of First Order Linear Differential Equations With Non-Diagonalizable Matrices, Nicholas Claude Plowman
Analysis Of Systems Of First Order Linear Differential Equations With Non-Diagonalizable Matrices, Nicholas Claude Plowman
All ETDs from UAB
Finding solutions to differential equations is notoriously computationally intensive given that the number of operations required is heavily dependent on the algorithm being implemented. This is especially true for systems described by a matrix representation because as the eigenvalues of the system approach non-uniqueness, any approximations made by the program looking for the solution can lead to undesirable precision errors when calculating the final solution. In this document, two algorithms are compared which deal with this issue of stability which can greatly affect the decision to use one method over the other. In the method of solving the system by …
