Effects Of Alterations In Monoamine Levels On Conditioned Taste Aversions In The Rat., William B. Nunn
Effects Of Alterations In Monoamine Levels On Conditioned Taste Aversions In The Rat., William B. Nunn
All ETDs from UAB
Four experiments were performed to investigate the role of the neurotransmitter serotonin in mediating LiCl-based conditioned taste aversions. Previous research has indicated that reductions in forebrain serotonin levels produce a more potent conditioned taste aversion in the rat and that pretreatment with the serotonin precursor, 5-hydroxytryptophan, will attenuate a taste aversion. However, conclusions based on studies using 5-hydroxytryptophan may be of limited value since exogenous 5-hydroxytryptophan may be converted into serotonin in catecholaminergic neurons as well as in serotonergic neurons. Use of the specific serotonin uptake inhibitor fluoxetine HCl in the present studies allowed for more controlled manipulation of serotonergic …

Literature is a record of moments to be remembered. What is life but moments, clock ticks and stimuli which fall jumbled, chaotic, meaningless upon the five human sensory organs? Fiction attempts to encapsulate certain moments, and although occasionally the moments recorded may appear to approximate reality, reality is elusive and chaotic. A writer attempts to weave from chaos a pattern. To do this he must reconstruct a series of moments which will appear to the reader to be believable, and in so doing the written word becomes art. Art emerges the moment the pattern becomes successfully completed ; moments are …

Analysis Of Cray-1s Using Dataflow Graphs., Jorge F. Asenjo
All ETDs from UAB
An approach for analyzing the architecture and predicting the performance of computer systems based on a dataflow graph model is presented. The approach consists of representing the components of a computer system as the nodes of a dataflow graph and the interconnections between the components as the arcs of the dataflow graph. The elapsed time and the resources used in a component are represented by the latency time attri- bute and the operation attribute of the corresponding node. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by modeling the CPU-memory subsystem of the CRAY-1S computer. The resulting model is simulated to obtain …

The process by which the meaning of individual words is determined in the context of a sentence is an important part of sentence comprehension and more generally communication. There are numerous words in the English language with two or more different meanings (i.e., polysemous words) and in fact, relatively common words with a single meaning are quite rare in any language. Assuming that for each dictionary meaning of a word there exists the potential for a corresponding lexical entry for each meaning, then on the average there would be more lexical entries for polysemous words.

U. S. county government in general, and county managers in particular, are some of the least known entities of the U. S. government system, though counties affect most of the people in this country. Even though county governments are not very active in some areas of the country (eg., the Northeast), they are, nevertheless, basic providers of public services to the citizenry of the United States.
The Influence Of Economic And Political Conditions On Revitalizing Downtown And Neighborhood Business Districts., Cynthia Frances Wright
The Influence Of Economic And Political Conditions On Revitalizing Downtown And Neighborhood Business Districts., Cynthia Frances Wright
All ETDs from UAB
Does the success of a city's program to revitalize its business districts depend more on local economic conditions or on political conditions? Political scientists have debated this question of whether political structures and processes or socio-economic needs and resources are more influential in shaping public policy. The original assumption that political structures and processes were crucial was replaced by the notion that both political structures and public policy were determined by social needs and economic resources.
Graph Isomorphism Algorithms Based On Trees And Paths., Susan Thorpe Dean
Graph Isomorphism Algorithms Based On Trees And Paths., Susan Thorpe Dean
All ETDs from UAB
Polynomially bounded algorithms are presented for testing isomorphism of two classes of graphs: the strongly regular graphs, which have been difficult for many previous isomorphism algorithms to process, and the compact graphs (graphs with diameter of 2 whose complements also have diameter of 2).The strongly regular graphs algorithm is based on the use of a profiling technique to enumerate the positions of the vertices with respect to the shortest paths of length and the neighborhoods of providing a measure of the graph 2 the vertices on the paths, thus structure. As a consequence of the rigid constraints imposed (by definition …

Interracial Aggression: Behavioral And Attitudinal Variables., Robin Hilary Gurwitch
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of the study was to explore behavioral and attitudinal variables of interracial aggression. Forty black and forty white female undergraduates were used as subjects. Subject race, target race, and anonymity served as the independent variables. Shock intensity, shock duration, and anticipated intensity and duration served as the behavioral dependent variables, while subjects ratings of themselves, the target, Blacks, Whites, and several social issues were employed as the attitudinal dependent variables. Although no significant behavioral results were found, large ingroup-outgroup effects were observed for the attitudinal variables. Explanations of the results and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
Learning-Disabled Students' Noun Referent Skills In Original Narratives: A Pilot Study., Mary Jane Curry
Learning-Disabled Students' Noun Referent Skills In Original Narratives: A Pilot Study., Mary Jane Curry
All ETDs from UAB
Identification of a student as learning--disabled requires an assessment of his written language (U.S. Office of Education, 1977, p. 42478). This requirement poses a problem for educators: while researchers have established that multiple-choice writing tests are not valid measures of writing ability (Braddock, Lloyd-Jones, & Schoer, 1963), only one standardized test (Hammill & Larsen, 1978) includes a reliable evaluation based upon the student's own original composition.

Shuttlebox Self-Stimulation Behavior Following Intracerebral Microinjections Of Morphine Into The Ventral Tegmental-Substantia., Craig Anderson Horn
All ETDs from UAB
Systemic analgesic injections of morphine have been shown to increase the rate at which rats will lever-press for electrical brain stimulation as well as decrease the current intensity required for this self-stimulation. In the shuttlebox paradigm, the animal crosses from one side of the case to the other in order to turn the current on and off. Similar doses of morphine will selectively increase average ON times per crossing without affecting OFF times. It has been suggested that these effects reflect a sensitization of natural reward pathways by the opioids. Previous work has identified the ventral tegmental-substantia nigral area (VT-SN) …
Memory For Meaning And Sound: A Test Of The Developmental And Difference Theories Of Mental Retardation., Judy C. Dekich
Memory For Meaning And Sound: A Test Of The Developmental And Difference Theories Of Mental Retardation., Judy C. Dekich
All ETDs from UAB
Intellectually, the mentally retarded child is often characterized as being similar to the younger nonretarded child. This concept is implicit in the use of a "mental age" in standardized intelligence tests. The retarded adolescent who obtains a score comparable to that of the average 10 year old is said to have a mental age of 10. The term "retardation" itself denotes a slowing in development rather than any specific defect or deviation in the direction of development. Only approximately 15 percent of all retarded children have moderate to severe defects associated with some organic etiology. The remaining 85% are mildly …
Self-Stimulation And Morphine Abstinence In The Rat., Judith A. Goodwin
Self-Stimulation And Morphine Abstinence In The Rat., Judith A. Goodwin
All ETDs from UAB
To test the effects of morphine abstinence on shuttlebox self-stimulation, rats were implanted with either a morphine or placebo pellet. Naloxone or saline was administered 48 hours later and animals were observed briefly for abstinence behaviors. Immediately following the observation period, animals were tested in the shuttlebox. Of the ten animals undergoing naloxone-precipitated abstinence, two were behaviorally sedated and had both high ON times and OFF times. The non-sedated abstinent rats self-stimulated at baseline rates. This suggests that an abstinence-induced behavioral sedation masks the reward value of self-stimulation during abstinence and that reward systems supporting self-stimulation function at predrug levels. …

The formation of bacterial flocs is of crucial importance in the activated sludge process of biological system, treatment waste treatment. In such a generally begins with the settling of large suspended solids from the influent wastewater. The liquid is then channeled into the reaction basin where soluble organic compounds undergo degradation, which is primarily accomplished by the metabolic activity of bacteria, though fungi, algae and protozoa may contribute to the process. Vigorous agitation facilitates contact between substrate molecules and microbes, and aeration maintains the necessary oxygen tension to sustain the aerobic organisms pertinent to the process. During this stage of …

All ETDs from UAB
Eastern fence lizards from Alabama were captured and reproductive parameters were measured. In males, the height of the breeding season (spermiogenesis and spermiation) occurred from March to May. Testis mass declined during this time. Spermatozoa were present in the epididymides until July. In June and July, testis mass was minimal. A new spermatogenic cycle had begun by August. Testicular recrudescence occurred in fall with concomitant increase in testis mass. Males had spermatids with a few transforming spermatozoa in their testes as they entered brumation. The longer warm season in Alabama permitted the males to begin spermiogenesis and spermiation earlier and …

A Correlation Of Microstructure With Hot-Ductility In The Heat-Affected Zone Of Inconel 718., Semih Genculu
All ETDs from UAB
Increased performance requirements for structural components and the demand for materials with enhanced properties have significantly increased the problems involved in producing sound welds. Due to the high temperatures and steep temperature gradients in the vicinity of welds, high stresses and complex stress patterns are unavoidable. Though process control parameters can be varied to minimize such stresses, cracking may occur in the fusion zone or in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ). The objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of hot cracking in the weld HAZ by making a correlation between the HAZ microstructure and the HAZ …

A recording of the electrical activity of the brain in response to various types of stimulation, e.g., electrical, mechanical, optical, acoustical, etc. is called an electric response (ER). The ER is composed of a series of evoked potentials (EPs) which are generated by various structures of the nervous system. ER recording has become a well-established laboratory technique which has found practical applications in clinical diagnosis, e.g., the audiometric testing of individuals who cannot be readily tested by behavioral techniques (Jerger, Hayes, & Jordan, 1980; Weber, 1979). However, the primary application of ERs remains as a research tool.

Multiple Electrode Recording Of Cardiac Activation., Aloysius Edward Germann
All ETDs from UAB
Cardiac activation has been the subject of much research since its first practical clinical recording by Wilhelm Einthoven who in 1903 produced an electrocardiogram using a string galvanometer. This report describes a multiple electrode device which has been used to record the electrical activation of the epicardial surface of the heart during open heart surgery. It consists of flexible circuit materials and represents and improved version of a multiple electrode array already in use for the purpose of recording the activity of multiple epicardial sites simultaneously. Conventional epicardial mapping techniques utilize a handheld electrode probe that is moved over the …

All ETDs from UAB
Three alloys used for surgical applications, 316L stainless steel (Fe-Cr-Ni, ASTMF138), Co-Cr-Mo (ASTM F75) and T1-6A1-4V (ASTM F136) were investigated to determine the elemental constituents released during corrosion and to determine the tissue responses elicited under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In vitro testing involved exposing cell cultures to varying concentrations of synthetic solutions based on the alloy’s chemical composition and independently to solutions of the elements comprising the alloy. In vivo testing involved implanting the alloys in rabbits and injecting synthetic solutions of corrosion products at the implant-to-capsule interface. In vitro exposure of cell cultures to synthetic stainless …

The indiscriminate discharge of industrial wastewaters such as those containing high levels of ammonia, has resulted in toxicity to animal and human life and in eutrophication of receiving streams. Stringent government regulations now limit effluent volumes of affected industries. The destructive distillation of coal to produce coke, which is used as a reducing agent for iron and steel production, may result in ammonia levels above 300 mg/L in the wastewater. iron and steel industry has therefore been required to seek an effective and economical method of removing the ammonia from its effluent. The limitations, including high costs of various physiochemical …
