Obesity is a label that has different meanings. Sims (1979) has outlined three definitions of obesity. The first is the social definition, based upon visual perception of the individual being labelled. The second is the statistical definition, based upon a population norm and typically specifying the upper 5-20% of what- ever criterion is being used.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between extraocular muscle tension and fluctuations in intraocular pressure (IOP) in normal subjects. Twenty subjects were asked to increase and decrease their EMG activity from the orbicularis muscle around the eye according to a biofeedback paradigm. Subjects received three trials of alternating increase and rest periods while maintaining the eyes open. A fourth trial consisted of a forceful closure of the eyes during the increase period. IOP was measured every 60 seconds throughout the entire sequence, and electrodes placed above and below the eye recorded eye blinks. Results suggest that …

In 1912, an educational mandate, prepared by the Children's Bureau for the President of the United States, stated as its primary objective: "to investigate and report on all matters affecting the welfare and education of children from all backgrounds." In the report, emphasis was placed on those children from poverty stricken backgrounds who needed extra encouragement to develop their talents (CIS, 1970). The subject of this thesis is the synthesis of N-vinylacrylamide and, eventually, the cyclopolymerization of this monomer which, upon hydrolysis, should yield the alternating copolymer, poly(acrylic acid-co-vinylamine). N-vinylacrylamide was prepared by condensing two moles of acrylamide with one mole of acetaldehyde to give the intermediate, N,N’-ethylidenebisacrylamide, which was pyrolyzed at approximately 140°C, 20 mm. The N-vinylacrylamide was identified by NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The spin decoupling technique was used to analyze the N-vinylacrylamide proton pattern which was complicated by isomerism. The attempted cyclopolymerization of this monomer with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator afforded an insoluble polymer, possibly because of the difference …
