An Area Navigation Computer With Moving Map Display For Light General Aviation Aircraft., Jeffery Lee Tuttle Jan 1983

An Area Navigation Computer With Moving Map Display For Light General Aviation Aircraft., Jeffery Lee Tuttle

All ETDs from UAB

Area navigation computers are used extensively by the military and commercial airlines to fly straight routes between two points. The electronic equipment used by these types of aircraft to provide position input to the area navigation computer is inherently expensive. As a result, private owners of light general aviation aircraft cannot afford this much needed capability. This thesis documents a system based on the Motorola MC68000 microprocessor, a single VOR radio receiver, and a Loran-C radio receiver which will provide exceptional area navigation capability at a relatively moderate cost.

Narcotic Utilization For Pain Patients Housed In Private And Semi-Private Rooms., Jeffrey Joseph Dolce Jan 1983

Narcotic Utilization For Pain Patients Housed In Private And Semi-Private Rooms., Jeffrey Joseph Dolce

All ETDs from UAB

This investigation examined: (1) the utilization of narcotic analgesics by 40 back pain patients housed in private rooms and 40 patients housed in semi-private rooms ; and (2) the activity patterns of 10 orthopedic/pain patients housed in private rooms and 10 patients in semi-private rooms. It was postulated that patients in private rooms would experience reductions in stimulation which would lower pain tolerance and result in greater use of narcotic analgesics. It was found that pain patients housed in private rooms used more intramuscular request-contingent narcotic analgesics but not greater amounts of other types of narcotic analgesics. Room type, as …

Maximization Of The Electrochemical Detection Of Orthophosphate In Organic-Aqueous Solutions., Sara Harden Jan 1983

Maximization Of The Electrochemical Detection Of Orthophosphate In Organic-Aqueous Solutions., Sara Harden

All ETDs from UAB

It is well known that phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth of organisms. Therefore, it plays an important role as a growth-limiting nutrient in natural waters. Phosphorus-stimulated proliferation of plant micro- and macroorganisms in natural waters accelerates eutrophication thereby endangering larger aquatic life. Continual discharge of phosphorus-containing wastewater, agricultural drainage, and industrial wastes into bodies of water can result in the long-term destruction of the existing ecosystems. Monitoring of phosphorus concentrations in effluents and natural waters has, therefore, become a necessary regimen in environmental pollution control.

Education And Public Health In Mexico And Saudi Arabia: 1950 - 1980., Harry Griggs Hamilton Jan 1983

Education And Public Health In Mexico And Saudi Arabia: 1950 - 1980., Harry Griggs Hamilton

All ETDs from UAB

This paper reviews social policy and its effect on education and public health in Mexico and Saudi Arabia during the period from 1950 to 1980. A case study approach is employed to test the hypothesis that both Mexican and Saudi Arabian social policy was patterned after the Western European model of modernization, and that this emulation approach limited the effectiveness of education and public health efforts as measured by literacy rates, educational level, replacement of expatriates (only in Saudi Arabia), life expectancy, nutritional level, and incidence of disease associated with underdevelopment. It is argued that this approach was inefficient both …

Unity In "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger" And Mark Twain's Debt To Christian Science., Jeb Midyette Jan 1983

Unity In "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger" And Mark Twain's Debt To Christian Science., Jeb Midyette

All ETDs from UAB

Since 1969 the traditional assessment of the final fifteen years of Mark Twain's career has undergone a reversal because of the availability of the original Mysterious Stranger Manuscripts. These manuscripts, for the first time, presented three distinct versions of Twain's mysterious stranger stories. Study of these texts has revealed that after Twain's death in 1910, his editor, Albert Bigelow Paine, without Twain's prior consent, combined the body of "The Chronicle of Young Satan," the earliest version of the three different texts, with the conclusion of "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger," the final version. The novel, published in 1916 by F.A. …

Urban Versus Nonurban Counties: An Analysis Of The Distribution Of The Reagan Block Grant Funds In Alabama., Sandra Elaine Berry Jan 1983

Urban Versus Nonurban Counties: An Analysis Of The Distribution Of The Reagan Block Grant Funds In Alabama., Sandra Elaine Berry

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study is to determine if the State of Alabama distributes program funds underwritten by the Reagan block grants in such a way that the resulting distribution is biased against more urbanized counties. Specifically, this will be determined by looking at the percent change between FY 1981 and FY 1983 in the funding of selected State services at the county level. Percent change permits one to look at changes over time, and time, as will be shown, is an important consideration of this paper.

The Role Of Flagellates In Coke-Plant Activated Sludge., Alan L. Mullins Jan 1983

The Role Of Flagellates In Coke-Plant Activated Sludge., Alan L. Mullins

All ETDs from UAB

The activated sludge process is used by the coal-coking industry to treat toxic substances from the wastewater generated by the coking process. High levels of ammonia, phenol, cyanide, and thiocyanate are removed from the wastewater by the activity of a mixed microbial community. Though the microbes efficiently remove the toxic compounds, they in turn create a problem: the removal of the biomass that is generated in the degradation of these compounds. The transport and disposal of the excess sludge results in what is possibly the largest cost factor in the activated sludge treatment of wastewater.Because the microbial community is essential …

The Development Of A Highly Wear Resistant Aluminum Alloy., Mario Seneviratne Jan 1983

The Development Of A Highly Wear Resistant Aluminum Alloy., Mario Seneviratne

All ETDs from UAB

Wear has been a subject of concern to man for many centuries, with man having found many ways and means to overcome the problems encountered due to wear. The use of footwear by people, the shoeing of horses and the use of iron rims on wagon wheels were some of the actions taken by man centuries ago to combat wear. Though these problems appear trivial to us now, they would have been viewed as major problems of their time, the same way we view wear problems of this era.

Systematic Desensitization: Effects On Intellectually And Emotionally Based Assessments., Randal Keith Burleson Jan 1983

Systematic Desensitization: Effects On Intellectually And Emotionally Based Assessments., Randal Keith Burleson

All ETDs from UAB

This study attempts to explore the possible causal role of various types of expectancies in the behavior therapy technique of systematic desensitization. Researchers have long theorized that a person’s perception of the consequences of a given behavior (response-outcome expectancies) plays an important part in determining that behavior (Bandura, 1969).

Adaptation Of An Activated Sludge Process To The Treatment Of Coke-Plant Wastewater Containing High Levels Of Cyanide., Dennis Harden Jan 1983

Adaptation Of An Activated Sludge Process To The Treatment Of Coke-Plant Wastewater Containing High Levels Of Cyanide., Dennis Harden

All ETDs from UAB

Cyanide occurs in the wastewater of a variety of industries, particularly those involved in steel production, metal plating, coal gasification and in the manufacture of chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Because of its toxicity, cyanide is generally removed from wastewaters by chemical and physical methods, including alkaline chlorination, complexation and acidification, prior to biological treatment. A disadvantage of these processes is their cost.

Residents Without Residences: A Study Of Homelessness In Birmingham, Alabama., James Stephen Cleghorn

All ETDs from UAB

Popular perceptions of homeless persons are undergoing significant revision in these early years of the 1980's. The traditional pejorative stereotypes are still circulated, as evidenced in the remark made by the morning show DJ reproduced above, but such stereotypes now have to compete against a growing awareness of the homeless as much more than urban ”ground clutter.”

Cyclic And Mechanical Testing Of Instrumented Swine Spines., Joseph Marcus Hollis Jan 1983

Cyclic And Mechanical Testing Of Instrumented Swine Spines., Joseph Marcus Hollis

All ETDs from UAB

Deformities of the spine in the form of abnormal lateral curvatures have been noted throughout history. These deformities, if left to progress, can become very pronounced and respiratory problems often follow. The treatment for less severe curvatures usually consists of external bracing of the individual’s torso. In cases where the curvature is extreme or progressing, surgical treatment is often required. Fusion of the spine and stabilization by metallic alloy Harrington instrumentation is the most commonly used operative technique (Shultz and Hirsch, 1973).

Development Of A Prototype Speech Aid For The Non-Vocal Handicapped., Thomas M. Wilkinson Jan 1983

Development Of A Prototype Speech Aid For The Non-Vocal Handicapped., Thomas M. Wilkinson

All ETDs from UAB

Many neurologic and neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis not only impair speech production, but also make one unable to communicate with hand signals. This has the effect of virtually isolating the victim from social interaction. According to a report from the University of Wisconsin's Trace Research Institute, there are as many as 500,000 such people in this country. One family in four is at one time or another faced with a communication disorder of some degree of severity (Baker, 1982).

The Effect Of Ion Implantation On The Corrosive-Wear Resistance Of Ti-6a1-4v., Rhonda Kay Bacon Jan 1983

The Effect Of Ion Implantation On The Corrosive-Wear Resistance Of Ti-6a1-4v., Rhonda Kay Bacon

All ETDs from UAB

The human body will react to the introduction of any foreign material. The extent of this reaction depends not only on thematerial itself but on its size, shape and reaction products. Many surgical implant devices are subjected to wear and fretting processes which generate wear debris and corrosion products. Large volumes of corrosion products or wear debris can elicit a tissue response and may have a systemic effect in the body after a long period of exposure. These problems are of vital concern, especially with respect to prosthetic total joint replacements, since these implants should remain in situ for the …

Boundary Layer Development In Laminar Swirl Flow Inside A Circular Pipe., Mohssen Shodja Jan 1983

Boundary Layer Development In Laminar Swirl Flow Inside A Circular Pipe., Mohssen Shodja

All ETDs from UAB

Velocity distributions within the developing boundary layer of a swirling flow of an incompressible fluid in a circular pipe are investigated in this study. It is assumed that the intake conditions are such that the fluid, moving in the direction of the axis of the pipe, enters the pipe with an axial component which is practically constant over the whole cross section. A boundary layer initially of zero thickness is formed inside the pipe, and this layer increases in thickness downstream until its thickness becomes equal to the radius of the pipe. The solution for the boundary layer during the …

The Development Of Possible Low Chromium Replacements For Type 304 Stainless Steel., Noel Anthony Gordon Jan 1983

The Development Of Possible Low Chromium Replacements For Type 304 Stainless Steel., Noel Anthony Gordon

All ETDs from UAB

In the past decade the United States has suffered shortages of several raw materials which are of vital importance to the national economy. These materials must often be imported from countries which are politically unstable or openly hostile towards the United States. Recent studies indicate that the United States is dependent on foreign sources for twenty-two of the twenty-seven metals considered vital to the nation's defense and for the 1 operation of its industries. Of these twenty-two vital metals, chromium appears to be one of the most critical.

Effects Of The Antiandrogen Cyproterone Acetate On Maturing Male Mice., Lois Jennings Hudson Jan 1983

Effects Of The Antiandrogen Cyproterone Acetate On Maturing Male Mice., Lois Jennings Hudson

All ETDs from UAB

Antiandrogens are defined as substances capable of selectively suppressing the biological activity of androgens at their target sites (Dorfman, 1970). In the last two decades, extensive use has been made of antiandrogens, both clinically and as a research tool. They have been used for hirsutism and related problems in women (Cittadini and Barreca, 1977), diseases of the prostate, precocious puberty (Gräf et al., 1974), male contraception (Hammerstein, 1977) and the treatment of male sex offenders (Jeffcoate et al., 1980). Additionally, they have been used as a tool to examine certain androgen-dependent processes, of which the most dramatic is the feminization …

A Biomechanical Study Of Gold And Nickel-Based Dental Bridge Systems Utilizing Distal Abutment Dental Implants., Martha Warren Bidez

All ETDs from UAB

It is estimated there are over thirty million edentulous people in the United States alone. In this population the use of conventional treatment modalities, i.e., full or partial removable dentures, has been demonstrated to result in: (1) loss of alveolar bone height with subsequent inability to retain a denture, (2) inflammation of surrounding gingival tissue with concomitant pain and decreased retentive capabilities, and (3) accelerated loss of natural supporting dentition (8,24,30). In the patient population exhibiting edentulous posterior regions (represented schematically in Figure 1), one or more of these problems are often manifested. Depending on the nature of the posterior …
