Some Effects Of Loss Formula Variation On Power System Production Costs., Charles W. Brand Jan 1974

Some Effects Of Loss Formula Variation On Power System Production Costs., Charles W. Brand

All ETDs from UAB

The use of a transmission loss formula in economic dispatch of generation is the most common approach in modern power system operation. A great deal of literature has been devoted to the problem of calculating accurate loss formulae. Several methods employ quite lengthy attempts to establish the loss formula accuracy by calculating many power flow check cases and comparing total transmission loss calculated using the loss formula with that actually calculated by the power flow program. It is, however, Incremental Transmission Loss that is of primary importance in dispatching generating units and very little has been written in the literature comparing …

The Relative Effectiveness Of Outpatient Therapy And Urine Surveillance With Drug Abusers., Charlotte Clarke

All ETDs from UAB

The UAB drug abuse treatment team is faced with the very difficult task of planning the use of the program's various resources and predicting the outcome of treatment based on the information gathered at the point of admission to the program. This information usually consists minimally of demographic data and a detailed drug use history. The initial evaluative process is extremely critical and reflects the program's ability to meet its goals. The UAB Drug Abuse Program, in an effort to insure the accomplishment of its objectives, has become engaged in an assessment of several of its treatment modalities.

Because the study of three-nucleon systems may provide information pertaining to the interaction between nucleons, much theoretical effort during the past forty years has been devoted to such systems. Provided that a means is found to predict accurately the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions which result from two-body forces, it is possible that the measured properties of three-nucleon systems can provide a significant means of discriminating among various so-called "realistic" potentials—two-body potentials which have been found to fit nucleon-nucleon scattering and deuteron data up to energies as high as 315 MeV,14 or can throw some light on the nature and magnitude of …

Assessment Of State-Dependent Learning Effects Produced By Marijuana In Human Subjects., Elaine P. Campbell Jan 1974

Assessment Of State-Dependent Learning Effects Produced By Marijuana In Human Subjects., Elaine P. Campbell

All ETDs from UAB

Dissociative or state-dependent learning refers to a phenomenon characterized by a decrement in the retrieval of previously learned information when a special state present during acquisition is subsequently altered. This change in state is generally produced by a drug administered to the subject, and the decrement may range from partial to total impairment of retrieval. When the "special state" present during acquisition is reinstated, retrieval occurs as usual.

Organized labor entered the 20th century full of hope. Labor leaders had become convinced, through such violent struggles as the Pullman Strike, that more peaceful means must be found to settle labor-management disputes. Many industrial leaders had also become aware of the economic and political difficulties caused by long and bitterly-fought strikes.

An Analysis Of Metaphors Used To Describe The Learning Process., Martha Grace Ralls

Metaphor is often employed in the formulation of new ideas. It is useful as a kind of expansion bridge which stretches between pre-existing concepts and original ideas still in the nebulous stage of formation. This is true when the theorist is creating new systems of thought and it is true when he is attempting to relate these new ways of viewing his subject to an interested audience.

Bending Of A Flat Circular Plate With A Central Hole Due To Evenly Spaced Bending Moments At The Outside., Edward Douglas Smyly Jan 1974

Bending Of A Flat Circular Plate With A Central Hole Due To Evenly Spaced Bending Moments At The Outside., Edward Douglas Smyly

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis contains the solution for the stress distribution and deflection in a flat circular plate with a circular hole under action of uniformly distributed radial bending moments applied over discrete zones at the outer boundary in an evenly spaced fashion. The solution was obtained from small-deflection plate theory as developed by LaGrange with the use of the boundary conditions formulated by Kirchhoff. A Fourier Series was used to represent the applied bending moments at the outer boundary.

In the first quarter of the nineteenth century American religion was in a state of ferment. The gaining of independence had brought changes to the political order which required organized religion to re-evaluate its position. Nearly all the traditional churches saw the need to develop national organizations. Some churches, most notably the Anglicans, were forced to make structural changes because they had been tightly bound to ecclesiastical authorities in England. West of the Appalachian Mountains, where the traditional churches were weak or nonexistent, reformers were unchallenged in the spread of new ideas.

Emission of a gamma ray from a nucleus is a result of a nuclear transition from one energy level to another. If the emitting nucleus is not bound in a crystal lattice, some of the transition energy, or the difference in energy of the two nuclear levels, may be imparted to the nucleus as it recoils, much as a gun acquires energy in recoiling after firing a bullet. This energy is termed the recoil energy associated with the transition. Consequently the energy of the emitted photon differs from the transition energy.

Development Of The Limb In Mice Bearing The Mutant Gene: Hypodactyly (Hd)., Cynthia Ann Jackson Jan 1974

Development Of The Limb In Mice Bearing The Mutant Gene: Hypodactyly (Hd)., Cynthia Ann Jackson

All ETDs from UAB

The investigations reported in this thesis were concerned with the embryological development, the penetrance, and the expressivity in two strains of inbred mice of a mutant gene: Hypodactyly, whose principal manifestation is a numerical reduction of the hindlimb digits. In 1966, Hypodactyly (symbol Hd; linkage group XI) occurred spontaneously in the inbred strain MYA/Hu (Hummel, 1971). Since the strain was homozygous for another mutant gene which interfered with classification of the new mutant, Hypodactyly was transferred by outcrossing to unrelated normal animals for study of its inheritance and expression. Hypodactyly was inherited as a semi-dominant mutation with full penetrance. No maternal …

Cell Death As A Morphogenetic Basis For Abnormal Development In Mutant-Bearing And Teratogen-Treated Embryos., Frank Perron Achorn Jr Jan 1974

Cell Death As A Morphogenetic Basis For Abnormal Development In Mutant-Bearing And Teratogen-Treated Embryos., Frank Perron Achorn Jr

All ETDs from UAB

Cell death is known to be a widespread and essential event during the normal development of many tissues and organs (Glucksmann, 1965). Whole organs may degenerate during normal organogenesis. For example, massive necrosis is necessary for the proper formation of the excretory and urogenital duct systems in vertebrates (Saunders, 1966). Cell death also has an important role in the contouring of some organs. The sculpturing of the chick wing is related to precisely timed cell death (Saunders, Gasseling, and Saunders, 1962) as is the shaping of the digits in the mammal (Milaire, 1965).

The Effects Of Type Of Stimulus Pretraining And Stimulus Complexity On Encoding Processes Of Normals And Retardates., John Douglas Hillhouse

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to study the effects of type of stimulus pretraining and stimulus complexity on encoding processes of normals and retardates using a serial probe task. A review of the literature indicated that retardates are deficient in what Bower refers to as "coding as elaboration." Thirty normal Ss and thirty retarded Ss were used in the study. A group of normals and retardates was pretrained with labels that were relevant to the stimuli while another group was pretrained with labels that were irrelevant to the stimuli. A third group received familiarization training. Each group received either …

Concerning The Covering Theorem For Closed And Perfectly Compact Point Sets., Thomas Leon Nix

All ETDs from UAB

In this thesis it will be shown that, as a consequence of R. L. Moore’s Axiom 0 and the Well-Ordering Theorem, the following is a theorem: If M is a closed point set, then M is perfectly compact if, and only if, when G is a collection of regions covering M, then some finite subcollection of G covers M.
