The purpose of this study was to study the effects of type of stimulus pretraining and stimulus complexity on encoding processes of normals and retardates using a serial probe task. A review of the literature indicated that retardates are deficient in what Bower refers to as "coding as elaboration." Thirty normal Ss and thirty retarded Ss were used in the study. A group of normals and retardates was pretrained with labels that were relevant to the stimuli while another group was pretrained with labels that were irrelevant to the stimuli. Dissociative or state-dependent learning refers to a phenomenon characterized by a decrement in the retrieval of previously learned information when a special state present during acquisition is subsequently altered. This change in state is generally produced by a drug administered to the subject, and the decrement may range from partial to total impairment of retrieval. When the "special state" present during acquisition is reinstated, retrieval occurs as usual.

The UAB drug abuse treatment team is faced with the very difficult task of planning the use of the program's various resources and predicting the outcome of treatment based on the information gathered at the point of admission to the program. This information usually consists minimally of demographic data and a detailed drug use history. The initial evaluative process is extremely critical and reflects the program's ability to meet its goals. The UAB Drug Abuse Program, in an effort to insure the accomplishment of its objectives, has become engaged in an assessment of several of its treatment modalities.

Because the study of three-nucleon systems may provide information pertaining to the interaction between nucleons, much theoretical effort during the past forty years has been devoted to such systems. Provided that a means is found to predict accurately the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions which result from two-body forces, it is possible that the measured properties of three-nucleon systems can provide a significant means of discriminating among various so-called "realistic" potentials—two-body potentials which have been found to fit nucleon-nucleon scattering and deuteron data up to energies as high as 315 MeV,14 or can throw some light on the nature and magnitude of …

This thesis reports on a study of the effect of porosity on the elevated temperature fatigue properties of low-alloy steel weldments. The material selected for investigation was ASTM A387-D, a 2-1/4 Cr - 1 Mo low-alloy steel commonly used in the fabrication of welded. structures which must perform at elevated temperature, such as nuclear vessels and petroleum hydrocrackers.

Emission of a gamma ray from a nucleus is a result of a nuclear transition from one energy level to another. If the emitting nucleus is not bound in a crystal lattice, some of the transition energy, or the difference in energy of the two nuclear levels, may be imparted to the nucleus as it recoils, much as a gun acquires energy in recoiling after firing a bullet. This energy is termed the recoil energy associated with the transition. Consequently the energy of the emitted photon differs from the transition energy.

Cell death is known to be a widespread and essential event during the normal development of many tissues and organs (Glucksmann, 1965). Whole organs may degenerate during normal organogenesis. For example, massive necrosis is necessary for the proper formation of the excretory and urogenital duct systems in vertebrates (Saunders, 1966). Cell death also has an important role in the contouring of some organs. The sculpturing of the chick wing is related to precisely timed cell death (Saunders, Gasseling, and Saunders, 1962) as is the shaping of the digits in the mammal (Milaire, 1965).

The use of a transmission loss formula in economic dispatch of generation is the most common approach in modern power system operation. A great deal of literature has been devoted to the problem of calculating accurate loss formulae. Certain instances of abnormal development may be due to genotype alone or to environment alone. In all likelihood, however, most abnormal development results from an interaction of genotype and environment (Fraser, ’59). The influence of genotype on response to environmental stimuli has been investigated in Drosophila (Goldschmidt and Piternick, ’57), fowl (Landauer, ’48, ’60, ’65), and mammals (Dagg, ’66). Different strains of the same species often show varied developmental responses to the same stimulus, presumably due to polygenic differences between strains (Dagg, ’63; Dagg, Schlager and Doer, ’65; Landauer, *60).
