A recording of the electrical activity of the brain in response to various types of stimulation, e.g., electrical, mechanical, optical, acoustical, etc. is called an electric response (ER). The ER is composed of a series of evoked potentials (EPs) which are generated by various structures of the nervous system. ER recording has become a well-established laboratory technique which has found practical applications in clinical diagnosis, e.g., the audiometric testing of individuals who cannot be readily tested by behavioral techniques (Jerger, Hayes, & Jordan, 1980; Weber, 1979). However, the primary application of ERs remains as a research tool.

Cardiac activation has been the subject of much research since its first practical clinical recording by Wilhelm Einthoven who in 1903 produced an electrocardiogram using a string galvanometer. This report describes a multiple electrode device which has been used to record the electrical activation of the epicardial surface of the heart during open heart surgery. It consists of flexible circuit materials and represents and improved version of a multiple electrode array already in use for the purpose of recording the activity of multiple epicardial sites simultaneously. Biocompatibility Investigations Of Surgical Implant Alloys., Linda Chambers Lucas

Three alloys used for surgical applications, 316L stainless steel (Fe-Cr-Ni, ASTMF138), Co-Cr-Mo (ASTM F75) and T1-6A1-4V (ASTM F136) were investigated to determine the elemental constituents released during corrosion and to determine the tissue responses elicited under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In vitro testing involved exposing cell cultures to varying concentrations of synthetic solutions based on the alloy’s chemical composition and independently to solutions of the elements comprising the alloy. In vivo testing involved implanting the alloys in rabbits and injecting synthetic solutions of corrosion products at the implant-to-capsule interface. In vitro exposure of cell cultures to synthetic stainless …

In 1912, an educational mandate, prepared by the Children's Bureau for the President of the United States, stated as its primary objective: "to investigate and report on all matters affecting the welfare and education of children from all backgrounds." In the report, emphasis was placed on those children from poverty stricken backgrounds who needed extra encouragement to develop their talents (CIS, 1970). The subject of this thesis is the synthesis of N-vinylacrylamide and, eventually, the cyclopolymerization of this monomer which, upon hydrolysis, should yield the alternating copolymer, poly(acrylic acid-co-vinylamine). N-vinylacrylamide was prepared by condensing two moles of acrylamide with one mole of acetaldehyde to give the intermediate, N,N’-ethylidenebisacrylamide, which was pyrolyzed at approximately 140°C, 20 mm. The N-vinylacrylamide was identified by NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The spin decoupling technique was used to analyze the N-vinylacrylamide proton pattern which was complicated by isomerism. The attempted cyclopolymerization of this monomer with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator afforded an insoluble polymer, possibly because of the difference …
