Narcotic Utilization For Pain Patients Housed In Private And Semi-Private Rooms., Jeffrey Joseph Dolce

This investigation examined: (1) the utilization of narcotic analgesics by 40 back pain patients housed in private rooms and 40 patients housed in semi-private rooms ; and (2) the activity patterns of 10 orthopedic/pain patients housed in private rooms and 10 patients in semi-private rooms. It was postulated that patients in private rooms would experience reductions in stimulation which would lower pain tolerance and result in greater use of narcotic analgesics. It was found that pain patients housed in private rooms used more intramuscular request-contingent narcotic analgesics but not greater amounts of other types of narcotic analgesics. Room type, as …

The process by which the meaning of individual words is determined in the context of a sentence is an important part of sentence comprehension and more generally communication. There are numerous words in the English language with two or more different meanings (i.e., polysemous words) and in fact, relatively common words with a single meaning are quite rare in any language. Assuming that for each dictionary meaning of a word there exists the potential for a corresponding lexical entry for each meaning, then on the average there would be more lexical entries for polysemous words.

Intellectually, the mentally retarded child is often characterized as being similar to the younger nonretarded child. This concept is implicit in the use of a "mental age" in standardized intelligence tests. The retarded adolescent who obtains a score comparable to that of the average 10 year old is said to have a mental age of 10. The term "retardation" itself denotes a slowing in development rather than any specific defect or deviation in the direction of development. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between extraocular muscle tension and fluctuations in intraocular pressure (IOP) in normal subjects. Twenty subjects were asked to increase and decrease their EMG activity from the orbicularis muscle around the eye according to a biofeedback paradigm. Subjects received three trials of alternating increase and rest periods while maintaining the eyes open. A fourth trial consisted of a forceful closure of the eyes during the increase period. IOP was measured every 60 seconds throughout the entire sequence, and electrodes placed above and below the eye recorded eye blinks. Results suggest that …

An approach for analyzing the architecture and predicting the performance of computer systems based on a dataflow graph model is presented. The approach consists of representing the components of a computer system as the nodes of a dataflow graph and the interconnections between the components as the arcs of the dataflow graph. The elapsed time and the resources used in a component are represented by the latency time attri- bute and the operation attribute of the corresponding node.The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by modeling the CPU-memory subsystem of the CRAY-1S computer. Four experiments were performed to investigate the role of the neurotransmitter serotonin in mediating LiCl-based conditioned taste aversions. Previous research has indicated that reductions in forebrain serotonin levels produce a more potent conditioned taste aversion in the rat and that pretreatment with the serotonin precursor, 5-hydroxytryptophan, will attenuate a taste aversion. However, conclusions based on studies using 5-hydroxytryptophan may be of limited value since exogenous 5-hydroxytryptophan may be converted into serotonin in catecholaminergic neurons as well as in serotonergic neurons. Use of the specific serotonin uptake inhibitor fluoxetine HCl in the present studies allowed for more controlled manipulation of serotonergic …

Political scientists have debated this question of whether political structures and processes or socio-economic needs and resources are more influential in shaping public policy. The purpose of the study was to explore behavioral and attitudinal variables of interracial aggression. Forty black and forty white female undergraduates were used as subjects. Subject race, target race, and anonymity served as the independent variables. Shock intensity, shock duration, and anticipated intensity and duration served as the behavioral dependent variables, while subjects ratings of themselves, the target, Blacks, Whites, and several social issues were employed as the attitudinal dependent variables. Although no significant behavioral results were found, large ingroup-outgroup effects were observed for the attitudinal variables. Explanations of the results and suggestions for future studies were discussed.

Identification of a student as learning--disabled requires an assessment of his written language (U.S. Office of Education, 1977, p. 42478). This requirement poses a problem for educators: while researchers have established that multiple-choice writing tests are not valid measures of writing ability (Braddock, Lloyd-Jones, & Schoer, 1963), only one standardized test (Hammill & Larsen, 1978) includes a reliable evaluation based upon the student's own original composition.

Systemic analgesic injections of morphine have been shown to increase the rate at which rats will lever-press for electrical brain stimulation as well as decrease the current intensity required for this self-stimulation. In the shuttlebox paradigm, the animal crosses from one side of the case to the other in order to turn the current on and off. Similar doses of morphine will selectively increase average ON times per crossing without affecting OFF times. To test the effects of morphine abstinence on shuttlebox self-stimulation, rats were implanted with either a morphine or placebo pellet. Naloxone or saline was administered 48 hours later and animals were observed briefly for abstinence behaviors. Immediately following the observation period, animals were tested in the shuttlebox. Of the ten animals undergoing naloxone-precipitated abstinence, two were behaviorally sedated and had both high ON times and OFF times. The non-sedated abstinent rats self-stimulated at baseline rates. This suggests that an abstinence-induced behavioral sedation masks the reward value of self-stimulation during abstinence and that reward systems supporting self-stimulation function at predrug levels. …

The formation of bacterial flocs is of crucial importance in the activated sludge process of biological system, treatment waste treatment. In such a generally begins with the settling of large suspended solids from the influent wastewater. The liquid is then channeled into the reaction basin where soluble organic compounds undergo degradation, which is primarily accomplished by the metabolic activity of bacteria, though fungi, algae and protozoa may contribute to the process. Eastern fence lizards from Alabama were captured and reproductive parameters were measured. In males, the height of the breeding season (spermiogenesis and spermiation) occurred from March to May. Testis mass declined during this time. Spermatozoa were present in the epididymides until July. In June and July, testis mass was minimal. A new spermatogenic cycle had begun by August. Testicular recrudescence occurred in fall with concomitant increase in testis mass. Males had spermatids with a few transforming spermatozoa in their testes as they entered brumation. Increased performance requirements for structural components and the demand for materials with enhanced properties have significantly increased the problems involved in producing sound welds. Due to the high temperatures and steep temperature gradients in the vicinity of welds, high stresses and complex stress patterns are unavoidable.
