Since 1969 the traditional assessment of the final fifteen years of Mark Twain's career has undergone a reversal because of the availability of the original Mysterious Stranger Manuscripts. These manuscripts, for the first time, presented three distinct versions of Twain's mysterious stranger stories. Study of these texts has revealed that after Twain's death in 1910, his editor, Albert Bigelow Paine, without Twain's prior consent, combined the body of "The Chronicle of Young Satan," the earliest version of the three different texts, with the conclusion of "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger," the final version. Urban Versus Nonurban Counties: An Analysis Of The Distribution Of The Reagan Block Grant Funds In Alabama., Sandra Elaine Berry

The purpose of this study is to determine if the State of Alabama distributes program funds underwritten by the Reagan block grants in such a way that the resulting distribution is biased against more urbanized counties. Specifically, this will be determined by looking at the percent change between FY 1981 and FY 1983 in the funding of selected State services at the county level. Percent change permits one to look at changes over time, and time, as will be shown, is an important consideration of this paper.

Increasing quantities of solid waste production by our society is beginning to cause severe problems with disposal. Municipal production alone amounts to 150 million tons annually (14). Rural production represents less of a problem since farmers have been recycling manure and other farm wastes back to the land for centuries. The primary problem lies in finding a sanitary means of disposing of municipal waste.

Cyanide occurs in the wastewater of a variety of industries, particularly those involved in steel production, metal plating, coal gasification and in the manufacture of chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Because of its toxicity, cyanide is generally removed from wastewaters by chemical and physical methods, including alkaline chlorination, complexation and acidification, prior to biological treatment. A disadvantage of these processes is their cost.

Popular perceptions of homeless persons are undergoing significant revision in these early years of the 1980's. Deformities of the spine in the form of abnormal lateral curvatures have been noted throughout history. These deformities, if left to progress, can become very pronounced and respiratory problems often follow. The treatment for less severe curvatures usually consists of external bracing of the individual’s torso. In cases where the curvature is extreme or progressing, surgical treatment is often required. Fusion of the spine and stabilization by metallic alloy Harrington instrumentation is the most commonly used operative technique (Shultz and Hirsch, 1973).

Levels of fluctuating asymmetry were compared in two populations of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) from polluted waters and two populations from nonpolluted waters. Two of the characters studied, pectoral fin rays and lateral line scales, showed no asymmetry in these populations and therefore provided no data for comparisons. A third character, number of pores in the lateral line scales, showed asymmetry in all populations. Asymmetry was quantified in two ways: the absolute difference between counts on left and right sides Id I, and the number of asymmetrical scale pairs, ASP. Many neurologic and neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis not only impair speech production, but also make one unable to communicate with hand signals. This has the effect of virtually isolating the victim from social interaction. According to a report from the University of Wisconsin's Trace Research Institute, there are as many as 500,000 such people in this country. One family in four is at one time or another faced with a communication disorder of some degree of severity (Baker, 1982).

The human body will react to the introduction of any foreign material. The extent of this reaction depends not only on thematerial itself but on its size, shape and reaction products. Many surgical implant devices are subjected to wear and fretting processes which generate wear debris and corrosion products. Velocity distributions within the developing boundary layer of a swirling flow of an incompressible fluid in a circular pipe are investigated in this study. It is assumed that the intake conditions are such that the fluid, moving in the direction of the axis of the pipe, enters the pipe with an axial component which is practically constant over the whole cross section. A boundary layer initially of zero thickness is formed inside the pipe, and this layer increases in thickness downstream until its thickness becomes equal to the radius of the pipe. Antiandrogens are defined as substances capable of selectively suppressing the biological activity of androgens at their target sites (Dorfman, 1970). In the last two decades, extensive use has been made of antiandrogens, both clinically and as a research tool. They have been used for hirsutism and related problems in women (Cittadini and Barreca, 1977), diseases of the prostate, precocious puberty (Gräf et al., 1974), male contraception (Hammerstein, 1977) and the treatment of male sex offenders (Jeffcoate et al., 1980).
