Gender Bending And Comic Books As Art: Issues Of Appropriation, Gender, And Sexuality In Japanese Art, Harley Blue Acres
Gender Bending And Comic Books As Art: Issues Of Appropriation, Gender, And Sexuality In Japanese Art, Harley Blue Acres
All ETDs from UAB
In Japanese high art, popular art (such as comic books and animation), theater, and music, representation of gender is a blurred line that is commonly crossed, more so than in the West. I argue that this fluidity is the result of disparate artistic sources that have filtered through Japanese culture since the Edo Period (1603-1867) with the flourishing of Kabuki Theater (in which men played women on stage) and the emergence of ukiyo-e (particularly shunga/erotica prints). This artistic lineage impacted arts of the Showa Period (1926-1989) notably Takarazuka Theater (which feature an exclusively female cast that portrays men) and the …
The Association Between Insulin And Inflammation In African American And European American Children, Jessica A. Alvarez
The Association Between Insulin And Inflammation In African American And European American Children, Jessica A. Alvarez
All ETDs from UAB
Insulin has anti-inflammatory properties. Markers of inflammation (MOI) increase in the postprandial state. African Americans (AA) have higher post-challenge insulin concentrations compared to European Americans (EA). The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between insulin and MOI in both the fasting and postprandial state. We hypothesized that, after accounting for confounding factors, fasting and postprandial insulin would be inversely associated with MOI, and that AA would have a lower postprandial inflammatory response because of a higher insulin response. C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL6), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type 2 (sTNF-R2), and insulin concentrations were assessed at …
Transit Operations Under Emergency Conditions, Amar S. Chaukar
Transit Operations Under Emergency Conditions, Amar S. Chaukar
All ETDs from UAB
The events of September 11th and the recent terrorist attacks on transit systems around the world have increased interest in protection and emergency preparedness for the transit systems. Emergency preparedness planning for transit systems is necessary to prevent distractions and effectively respond to major man-made or natural disasters. In this thesis a large-scale dynamic simulation/assignment model was developed and used to evaluate the impact of emergency conditions on transit operations in the Birmingham, AL, area. The Birmingham regional model was developed using the Visual Interactive System for Transport Algorithms. After the base model was tested and calibrated, a major traffic …
Ca 2+ /Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Ii Regulates The Growth Of Human Osteosarcoma Cells In Vivo, Hyeran Choo
Ca 2+ /Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Ii Regulates The Growth Of Human Osteosarcoma Cells In Vivo, Hyeran Choo
All ETDs from UAB
Osteosarcoma is the most predominant primary bone cancer among pediatric patients. The pathogenesis and mechanism of osteosarcoma, however, as yet remains unclear. This study investigated the hypothesis that Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK II), activated by Ca2+ and its intracellular receptor, calmodulin, plays a critical role in the growth of human osteosarcoma cells. The inhibition of CaMK II with its pharmacologic antagonist KN-93 was used to investigate the role of CaMK II in the growth of human osteosarcoma cells because our preliminary data showed that =-CaMK II is expressed in several human osteosarcoma cell lines. To examine the in vivo …
Isolation And Characterization Of Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells, Isabel C. Gay
Isolation And Characterization Of Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells, Isabel C. Gay
All ETDs from UAB
The periodontal ligament (PDL) is thought to include progenitor cells capable of forming fibroblasts, osteoblasts and cementoblasts. However, characterization of PDL stem cell populations (SC) remains undetermined due in part, to the diversity of cell types that conform to the periodontal apparatus. Objective: To isolate and characterize PDLSC and assess their pluripotent capabilities to differentiate into bone, cartilage and adipose cell types. Methods: PDL was scraped from human teeth, enzymatically digested, and cells stained for STRO- 1 (SC marker) using fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Positive cells were FACS sorted and expanded in culture. Human bone marrow SC (BMSC) served as a positive …
The Influence Of Insulin On Lipolysis In African American And Caucasian Prepubertal, Premenopausal, And Postmenopausal Females, Laura Lee T Goree
The Influence Of Insulin On Lipolysis In African American And Caucasian Prepubertal, Premenopausal, And Postmenopausal Females, Laura Lee T Goree
All ETDs from UAB
African Americans, compared to Caucasians, may have chronically suppressed free fatty acid (FFA) mobilization due to basal and postprandial hyperinsulinemia. The pur-pose of this study was to determine if lower FFA among African Americans are due to higher insulin concentration and if this ethnic difference in FFA, beta cell function, and insulin suppression of FFA declines with age. Subjects who qualified underwent a fre-quently-sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test (FSIGT) for determination of insulin sensitivity (Si) and the acute insulin response to glucose (AIRg). Body composition and fat distribution were assessed with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and com-puted tomography (CT), respectively. …
Determinants That Confer Stop Codon Specificity To Tetrahymena Thermophila Erf1, Cara Hope Heath
Determinants That Confer Stop Codon Specificity To Tetrahymena Thermophila Erf1, Cara Hope Heath
All ETDs from UAB
In eukaryotes, translation termination is a process which is initiated by the presence of a stop codon in the A site of the ribosome and mediated by the binding of a release factor (eRF1). In most eukaryotes, any one of three stop codons UGA, UAG, or UAA, is required for the binding of eRF1. However some organisms, such as the ciliates, have diverged from this universal coding. In one type of ciliate species, Tetrahymena thermophila, UAA and UAG are no longer recognized as stop codons and now both encode a glutamine residue. It was previously thought that domain 1 of …
Mesofauna Associated With The Subtropical/Tropical Marine Sponge Amphimedon Viridis : Are Faunal Associations Likely To Provide Refuge From Fish Predation Due To Physical Or Chemical Feeding Deterrent Properties Of This Sponge?, Jonathan Huang
All ETDs from UAB
Sessile benthic marine organisms such as sponges are frequently colonized by a wide diversity of invertebrates. The present study focused on a quantitative analysis of the mesofauna associated with the common subtropical/tropical sponge Amphimedon viridis and explored several criteria for the basis for this mesofauna-sponge relationship. Specimens of Amphimedon viridis were hand-collected individually in bags from both Saint Joseph Bay, Florida Panhandle, and Sugar Loaf Key, Florida Keys between April - November 2006. Quantitative analyses of sponge surfaces and interiors revealed that the most common sponge-associated group was comprised of amphipods, followed by polychaetes and tenaid crustaceans. 35 percent of …

Verbal Agression In Military Communication: Genetics Vs. Environment, Scott Gregory Johnson
Verbal Agression In Military Communication: Genetics Vs. Environment, Scott Gregory Johnson
All ETDs from UAB
A content analysis was done on various studies involving hormonal effects on verbal and physical aggression in animals ranging from “old world monkeys” to humans in order to prove that genetics is responsible for verbal aggressiveness used by military personnel in the contemporary operating environment. The prevailing belief set is that the military is more aggressive than other social and vocational groups. The analysis shows that military members do not differ in neurophysiology from other groups and species. Only studies on animals with human-like limbic systems were used. The analy-sis includes discussions on the evolution of the use of pure …

Temporal And Spatial Correspondence Of Intramural Rotors And Epicardial Breakthrough Patterns During Ventricular Tachycardia And Fibrillation In The Swine Heart, Jong Jin Kim
All ETDs from UAB
The mechanisms of life threatening cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia (VT) and fibrillation (VF) are very complex. The 3D reconstruction of electrical activity helps us to understand these complex arrhythmias. A new isolated heart preparation and combined electrical and optical mapping system was developed to simultaneously record surface and intramural activation patterns. Epicardial activity on a 6 cm by 6 cm region of the left ventricular wall was recorded optically with 1mm by 1mm spatial resolution using voltage sensitive fluorescent dye (di-4-ANNEPS) and a high speed CCD video camera. Intramural activation patterns were recorded using specially fabricated fiberglass plunge …
Mechanical Properties Of Dental Impression Materials, Nathaniel C. Lawson

All ETDs from UAB
Impression materials make a record of tooth structure and provide a critical step in many dental applications. The mechanical properties of the impression material determine its clinical viability. Purpose: This thesis examines three novel methods for measuring mechanical properties of elastomeric impression materials including: (1) flow, (2) tear strength, and (3) elastic recovery. Methods: Flow of 8 impression materials (6 silicone, 1 polyether, 1 hybrid) was measured using a shark fin testing device. The shark fin height of each material (n = 5) was collected at 30 second intervals beginning 30 seconds after mix and ending when material ceased to …
Hole Patching In 3d Unstructured Surface Mesh, Amitesh Kumar
Hole Patching In 3d Unstructured Surface Mesh, Amitesh Kumar
All ETDs from UAB
A three-dimensional object of interest in a volumetric data can be visualized using direct surface rendering methods or volume rendering approaches. Volume rendering is a visualization technique without providing the geometry information at all. However, an engineering analysis requires watertight surface geometry information of the object. Thus a three-dimensional object representation for the visualization using direct surface rendering may not necessarily be valid for engineering analysis, as such models are not necessarily watertight. Obtaining watertight surfaces has been a challenging task in the field of computational engineering due to presence of deficiencies such as gaps and holes in the surfaces. …
Hell Raisers And Holy Rollers, John Christopher Mahan
Hell Raisers And Holy Rollers, John Christopher Mahan
All ETDs from UAB
Hell Raisers and Holy Rollers seeks to explore and express, through poetry and prose, the religious tension I experienced growing up due to the influence of a morally diverse family. While my mother’s family was extremely religious, my father’s relatives were notorious for their brash and often criminal behavior. This dichotomy led to my own spiritual crisis as I struggled to find balance between my strong religious upbringing and my fascination with the “outlaw image” of my father’s family and their non-serviam approach to life. In many ways, the works attempt to capture this internal struggle and the tensions that …
Stem Cell Markers In The Posterior Limbus And Cornea, Sara L. Mcgowan
Stem Cell Markers In The Posterior Limbus And Cornea, Sara L. Mcgowan
All ETDs from UAB
The corneal endothelium is a layer of cells in the cornea that is responsible for maintaining the clear state of the cornea. Corneal endothelial cells may be induced to divide, but do not regularly divide in the normal cornea of a human beyond the age of twenty. Some studies have suggested that a stem cell population may reside in the pe-ripheral corneal endothelium or in the posterior limbus. Important molecular markers of stem cells are nestin which is expressed in neural crest stem cells; alkaline phosphatase is active in stem cells and not in differentiated cells; telomerase is a marker …
The Effect Of Cementation Technique On The Retention Of Adhesively Cemented Prefabricated Posts, Carlos A Polo Montes
The Effect Of Cementation Technique On The Retention Of Adhesively Cemented Prefabricated Posts, Carlos A Polo Montes
All ETDs from UAB
Adhesively cemented prefabricated posts are frequently employed for the restora-tion of endodontically treated teeth. Bonding agents may improve the post and core per-formance. Correct dentin bonding procedures are a critical factor in the bonded post re-tention, but adequate bonding in the canal space has been reported difficult to achieve. The operator is unable to visualize the depth of conditioner gel penetration into the canal, and its removal cannot be easily confirmed. Additional potential problems include excess water removal after rinsing the canal, inadequate primer coverage and/or removal, and poor curing methods for the resin luting agent. A technique to avoid …

Understanding Space: The Conceptualization And Evaluation Of Display In Dia:Beacon, Krista Chandler Pitman
All ETDs from UAB
In May 2003, the Dia:Beacon art museum opened its expansive doors to the public. Viewers were introduced not only to the Dia Art Foundation’s collection of major works from the 1960s to the present but also to a very different type of museum facility. With the help of a multi-million dollar face lift, this once industrial Nabisco factory became an ideal space for art installations. The galleries of Dia:Beacon were specifically designed to accommodate the Foundation’s large-scale collection. In this thesis, I discuss Dia:Beacon’s achievement in museum design and its use of display space by analyzing comparable museums and their …
Outcomes Of Massage Interventions On Teen Mothers And Their Infants, Krista Lee Oswalt
Outcomes Of Massage Interventions On Teen Mothers And Their Infants, Krista Lee Oswalt
All ETDs from UAB
The current study aims to determine whether teen mothers and their infants benefit from infant massage. A great deal of information related to the benefits of infant massage for premature infants is available in the literature, however, only a few studies have focused on infants of teen mothers. Because a number of risks have been associated with teen pregnancy, this population is a sensible choice for intervention. This study looks at the effects of infant massage on teen mothers and their infants, particularly in the areas of parental stress, depression, maternal confidence, and feelings about physical contact.
