Evaluation Of Bioactive Compounds On Different Extracts Of Linum Usitatissimum And Its Antimicrobial Properties Against Selected Oral Pathogens, Ummu A. Fadzir, Khairani I. Mokhtar, Basma E. Mustafa, Deny S. Darnis
Makara Journal of Health Research
Background: Antibacterial agents from natural sources have been suggested as alternatives for treating infectious diseases due to their low side effects. Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) exhibits some antibacterial properties, but its effects against oral pathogens are poorly understood. This study investigated flaxseed extracts' antibacterial effects against such pathogens. Methods: Non-polar and polar extracts of flaxseed, with n-hexane, dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol (MeOH), were prepared by sequential Soxhlet extraction. All extracts were qualitatively screened through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to detect bioactive compounds. Antibacterial activities of flaxseed extracts with different volumes per disc (Oxoid, Badhoevedorp, Netherlands) (5, 7, 10, 12 and 15 µL/disc) …

Hand Hygiene Among Hospital Staff: A Survey Of Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice In A General Hospital In Syria, Maha Othman, Cornelis Jonker
Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia
Poor hand-hygiene adherence endangers the safety of both healthcare workers and patients. A cross-sectional Knowledge Attitudes Practicing (KAP) survey (n= 268) and an observation of hand-hygiene compliance (n= 36) were conducted among staff in a general hospital in Syria. The aim of this study was to investigate the degree of compliance with hand hygiene protocols by general health care workers including their knowledge, attitude and practice. The mean overall observed hand-hygiene compliance rate was 45.7% (95% CI 37.1 – 54.3). Nurses were observed to have better compliance than physicians. Staff were observed to be more concerned in performing hand-hygiene after …

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious diseasecaused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). TB is still a major health problem. The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccineis the only one available for TB and is known to confer variable levels of protection. Because of thisvariability, a new vaccine is needed to control TB. Proteins secreted by M.tuberculosisare known to induce protective immunity. Within the genome of M. tuberculosis, there is a family of proteins called resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf), which playsa role in the reactivation of M. tuberculosis. RpfD is amember of the Rpf family that has been shown to be immunogenic, makingitsuitable for …

The number of elderly people in Indonesia is estimated to reach 29 million in 2020. The ageing process is usually followed by poor health which has been associated with risk of severe cognitive impairment. However, there is a limited training on older people’s health and cognitive impairment. Thus, programmes emphasise on trainings for health cadres, health workers and physicians are encouraged to improve older persons’ health. Additionally, health conditions of older persons have a relationship with cognitive impairment. There was 39% (thirty nine percent) of the elderly who experienced cognitive impairment in several cities and villages in Indonesia. Therefore, this …

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) or pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that can occur in immunocompromised patients. In patients with HIV, PCP is the most common opportunistic infection especially in patients with CD4 cell counts less than 200 cell /ul. To diagnose a PCP is very difficult because symptoms, blood tests, and thoracic radiography are not pathognomonic for PCP. However, untreated PCP is almost always fatal. Trimethroprimsulfamethoxazole (TMX-SMX) orally or intravenously for 21 days is the drug of choice for managing PCP with or without HIV. This article discusses a case with patients with symptoms of dyspneu, unproductive cough, …
