Wolf-Caribou Relationships In A Multiple Ungulate Prey Ecosystem, Bruce Williams Dale Apr 1993

Wolf-Caribou Relationships In A Multiple Ungulate Prey Ecosystem, Bruce Williams Dale

Theses (Unassigned)

Winter wolf (Canis lupus) predation and functional response in wolf - caribou (Rangifer tarandus) dynamics were investigated in a multiple ungulate prey ecosystem in Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska. Prey selection, prey availability, prey switching, kill rates, and food availability for 4 wolf packs were estimated in March 1989, March 1990, and November 1990. Estimates for these study periods reflected near record, average, and early winter snow conditions, respectively. Wolves killed predominately caribou even if moose (Alces alces) or Dall sheep (Ovis dalli) were more abundant. Prey selection varied with study period; however, per wolf kill rates and …

The Significance Of Marine-Derived Biogenic Nitrogen In Anadromous Pacific Salmon Freshwater Food Webs, Thomas Clayton Kline Apr 1991

The Significance Of Marine-Derived Biogenic Nitrogen In Anadromous Pacific Salmon Freshwater Food Webs, Thomas Clayton Kline

Fisheries

The natural abundance of the stable isotope ratios $\sp{15}$N/$\sp{14}$N and $\sp{13}$C/$\sp{12}$C expressed as $\delta\sp{15}$N and $\delta\sp{13}$C was used to trace biogenic nutrients delivered by returning adult anadromous Pacific salmon into freshwater systems. These systems were Sashin Creek, a rapidly flushing stream located on Baranof Island, southeastern Alaska and Iliamna Lake, the major sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, nursery lake in the Kvichak River watershed, Bristol Bay, southwestern Alaska. Marine-derived nitrogen (MDN) was quantifiable by use of an isotope mixing model based on comparison of biota $\delta\sp{15}$N in areas used for spawning by anadromous salmon with salmon-free controls within the same watershed. …

Effects Of Antimony Mining On Stream Invertebrates And Primary Producers In Denali National Park, Alaska, Kathleen Wedemeyer Dec 1987

Effects Of Antimony Mining On Stream Invertebrates And Primary Producers In Denali National Park, Alaska, Kathleen Wedemeyer

Theses (Unassigned)

Heavy metals, primarily antimony, arsenic and manganese from antimony mines in Denali National Park, Alaska impacted all levels of the stream ecosystem. Decreased algal, moss and macroinvertebrate abundance (but not changes in macroinvertebrate trophic organization) were all clearly associated with mining activity in Slate and Eldorado creeks. Crustacea, Chironomidae (Diptera), Hydracarina (Arachnida), Nemouridae (Plecoptera), and Zapada (Nemouridae) decreased in relative abundance with metal pollution while Capniidae (Plecoptera), Nemoura (Nemouridae), and Podmosta (Nemouridae) increased in relative abundance at mine sites. The data from Stampede Creek demonstrated that mineralized but unmined stream reaches may be impacted by heavy metals. Unexpectedly higher selenium …

Life Histories And Community Structure Of The Caddisflies (Trichoptera) Of Two Alaskan Subarctic Streams, John G. Irons May 1985

Life Histories And Community Structure Of The Caddisflies (Trichoptera) Of Two Alaskan Subarctic Streams, John G. Irons

Fisheries

The ecology of Trichoptera was studied in two streams in interior Alaska. Monument Creek and West Fork are characterized by cold water temperatures, low allochthonous input and periphyton biomass, and lengthy ice cover. Nine species were found, Rhyacophila vofixa ? (Rhyacophilidae), Glossosoma verdona, G. alascense (Glossosomatidae), Brachycentrus americanus (Brachycentridae), Hydatophylax variabilis, Ecclisomyia conspersa, Onocosmoecus unicolor, Chyranda centralis and Apatania crymophila (Limnephilidae). There were four shredders, three scrapers, one omnivore, and one predator. Within shredders and scrapers, species had sequentially overlapping life histories, perhaps allowing functionally similar species to use the same food resources. Latitudinal gradients in the North American Trichoptera …

Trophic Dynamics In Marine Nearshore Systems Of The Alaskan High Arctic (Kelp, Laminaria, Carbon Isotope, Productivity), Kenneth Harlow Dunton Apr 1985

Trophic Dynamics In Marine Nearshore Systems Of The Alaskan High Arctic (Kelp, Laminaria, Carbon Isotope, Productivity), Kenneth Harlow Dunton

Theses (Unassigned)

This dissertation describes two ecological studies in the arctic Alaskan nearshore zone: the productivity and growth strategies of arctic kelp and the use of natural carbon isotope abundances to examine food web structure and energy flow in the marine ecosystem. Linear growth of the kelp, Laminaria solidungula is greatest in winter and early spring when nutrients are available for new tissue growth. Since over 90% of this growth occurs in complete darkness beneath a turbid ice canopy, the plant draws on stored food reserves and is in a carbon deficit during the ice covered period. Annual productivity of L. solidungula …

Biology And Management Of White Spruce Seed Crops Reforestation In Subarctic Taiga Forests, J. Alden Mar 1985

Biology And Management Of White Spruce Seed Crops Reforestation In Subarctic Taiga Forests, J. Alden

Bulletin

Seed production is the most dramatic event in the life cycle of trees and is the first step in forest regeneration. Embryos of white spruce are fragile during germination, and they depend on vigorous seeds for survival and growth. Mortality of white spruce seeds and seedlings is high in northern forests because climate and microhabitat are often unfavorable for seed germination and seedling establishment. Large quantities of high-quality seed are required for natural and artificial regeneration of white spruce forests at high latitudes. The first chapter of this bulletin describes the reproductive process of white spruce and factors that affect …

Seasonal Changes Of Attached Algae In Two Alaskan Subarctic Stream, Patricia R. Anderson May 1984

Seasonal Changes Of Attached Algae In Two Alaskan Subarctic Stream, Patricia R. Anderson

Fisheries

Very few seasonal studies of attached stream algae (periphyton) have been conducted in the arctic and subarctic. Periphyton were sampled for 13 months in Monument Creek, a second-order stream, and in the West Fork of the Chena River, a fourth-order stream near Fairbanks, Alaska. Seasonal changes in periphyton community structure, density (cells ∙ m-2), biovolume (μm3), total chlorophyll a (mg ∙ m-2), and physical and chemical factors were determined. Diatoms dominated the community throughout the year in number and biovolume. Mean annual periphyton density was moderately high in West Fork and mean annual biomass (as total chlorophyll a) was low …

Bathymetry Of Alaskan Arctic Lakes: A Key To Resource Inventory With Remote-Sensing Methods, Jack C. Mellor May 1982

Bathymetry Of Alaskan Arctic Lakes: A Key To Resource Inventory With Remote-Sensing Methods, Jack C. Mellor

Marine Biology

Water depth is a major factor in predicting resources associated with tens-of-thousands of uninventoried Alaskan arctic lakes. Lakes were studied for physical, chemical, and biological resources related to water depth in 3 specific areas along a north/south transect extending from Pt. Barrow on the Arctic Ocean to the foothills of the Brooks Range. Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) imagery was acquired over the same study transect to investigate its application for determining lake depth. Ice thicknesses, necessary for the interpretation of depth contours from SLAR imagery, were measured along with other parameters in the study lakes throughout the winter 1978-79. This …

Nitrogen Resource Analysis And Modelling Of An Eelgrass (Zostera Marina L.) Meadow In Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, Frederick Tilton Short Sep 1981

Nitrogen Resource Analysis And Modelling Of An Eelgrass (Zostera Marina L.) Meadow In Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, Frederick Tilton Short

Theses (Unassigned)

Nitrogen limitation in beds of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., was examined by correlating plant standing stock and sediment nitrogen supplies, by measurement of nitrogen uptake in eelgrass roots and leaves, and by experimental manipulation of plant-nitrogen interaction. Eelgrass standing stock and sediment nitrogen across an eelgrass meadow were analyzed. Correlation was found between the integrated interstitial ammonium pool and shoot density and other morphological characteristics. A model of eelgrass growth predicted the effect of nitrogen utilization on biomass production and growth rates; nitrogen limitation controlled growth throughout the summer in ammonium-poor eelgrass beds but only at the peak growth periods …

Life Histories And Community Structure Of Ephemeroptera And Plecoptera In Two Alaskan Subarctic Streams, Allen L. Howe May 1981

Life Histories And Community Structure Of Ephemeroptera And Plecoptera In Two Alaskan Subarctic Streams, Allen L. Howe

Fisheries

Development of water quality and quantity standards required for improved management of stream fisheries depends on understanding life cycles of the major benthic components. Because temperature is a major factor influencing aquatic insect life histories, subarctic streams provide excellent opportunities to examine organisms existing under extreme environmental conditions. Life histories and community structure of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera were examined in two Alaskan subarctic streams during 1979 and 1980. Biweekly benthos samples were collected during the ice-free period in a second and a fourth order stream. Seventeen stonefly species and at least seven mayfly species were collected as nymphs or adults. …

Application Of Palynological Techniques For Correlation Of Coal Seams In The Lower Lignite Creek Area, Nenana Coal Field, R. Mcfarlane

MIRL Open File Reports

This study concerns spores and pollen in the coals of the lower Lignite Creek area in the Nenana Coal Field, which is operated by Usibelli Mining Company. The seams studied are part of the Suntrana Formation which contains a large portion of the coal reserves of Nenana coal. These coals are mid-Miocene in age and are separated from each other by cyclic sandstone, clay and silt deposits, which reflect alternating periods of coal forming swamps and depositing streams. A preliminary study of the mega and micro botanical fossils of this area was made in 1969 by Wolfe and Leopold (Wahrhaftig …

A Numerical Analysis Of The Distribution Of The Benthic Infauna Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Karl E. Haflinger Dec 1978

A Numerical Analysis Of The Distribution Of The Benthic Infauna Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Karl E. Haflinger

Marine Biology

The continental shelf region of the southeastern Bering Sea may be classified into five provinces (station groups) based on infaunal distribution. Three large station groups lie in adjacent bands extending from the Alaskan coast to the shelf break, roughly paralleling the bathymetry. Two smaller groups occupying positions at the head of Bristol Bay and off Nunivak Island were identified. Stations in the northwestern section of the study area (near the Pribilof Islands) show no strong affinity to the major station groups. Fourteen major biocoenoses identified on the basis of species distribution show strong correlation with the spatial positioning of station …

Hydrologic Properties Of Subarctic Organic Soils, Douglas L. Kane, Richard D. Seifert, George S. Taylor Jan 1978

Hydrologic Properties Of Subarctic Organic Soils, Douglas L. Kane, Richard D. Seifert, George S. Taylor

WERC Publications

The need for understanding the natural system and how it responds to various stresses is important; this is especially so in an environment where the climate not only sustains permafrost, but develops massive seasonal frost as well. Consequently, the role of the shallow surface organic layer is also quite important. Since a slight change in the soil thermal regime may bring about a phase change in the water or ice, therefore, the system response to surface alterations such as burning can be quite severe. The need for a better understanding of the behavior and properties of the organic layer is, …

Revegetation Research On Amchitka Island, A Maritime Tundra Location In Alaska: Final Report, Wm. W. Mitchell May 1976

Revegetation Research On Amchitka Island, A Maritime Tundra Location In Alaska: Final Report, Wm. W. Mitchell

University of Alaska Agricultural Experiment Station

Revegetation studies commenced by the Alaskan Agricultural Experiment Station in 1970 on Amchitka Island culminated in 1973 with the seeding of disturbed areas associated with the nuclear testing program. Cool temperatures coupled with strong winds and a high incidence of fog and cloud cover impose a tundra aspect on Amchitka, one of Alaska's most southerly land areas. Natural revegetation is undependable for the near term. Twenty-two perennial grasses, two clovers, and four annual grasses were tested on different soil types at low to medium-high (480 ft) elevation sites. At higher elevations severe winds and frost action maintain a barren-ground aspect. …

Ecological Studies Of The Benthic Fauna In An Arctic Estuary, James John Crane Aug 1974

Ecological Studies Of The Benthic Fauna In An Arctic Estuary, James John Crane

Marine Biology

Distributions and abundances of benthic fauna are described for the nearshore Beaufort Sea adjacent to the mouth of the Colville River. Harrison Bay, Simpson Lagoon, and the shallow waters seaward of the barrier islands were sampled with a small bottom trawl and grab during the late summer of 1971. This survey was part of a larger effort by the University of Alaska to obtain baseline information prior to oil exploration and development. Forty-seven species, dominated numerically by Crustacea, Hollusca, and Polychaeta were studied from a collection of 86 samples. The isopod, Mesidotea entonon, and the mysid, Mysis oculata were common …

Effects Of Crude Oil Treated Seawater On The Metabolism Of Phytoplankton And Seaweeds, W.E. Shiels May 1973

Effects Of Crude Oil Treated Seawater On The Metabolism Of Phytoplankton And Seaweeds, W.E. Shiels

Marine Biology

Prudhoe Bay crude oil was applied to natural populations of phytoplankton from Port Valdez, Alaska to examine its effect on photosynthesis. Studies were made at various times between July 1971 and June 1972., at oil concentrations ranging from about 0.001 - 10 ppm, and under various conditions of temperature, light and exposure time. Varying degrees of photosynthetic inhibition and stimulation were observed, apparently resulting from a complex interaction of physical, chemical and biological factors and the amount of oil present. Inhibition of photosynthesis occurred at oil concentrations of 0.06 ppm or greater during June, with stimulation observed at about 0.003 …
