Factors Affecting Water Management On The North Slope Of Alaska, Julian K. Greenwood, R. Sage Murphy
Factors Affecting Water Management On The North Slope Of Alaska, Julian K. Greenwood, R. Sage Murphy
WERC Publications
The North Slope of Alaska is undergoing sudden development following the recent discovery of large oil and gas reserves in the area. The water resources of the region should be carefully managed both to ensure adequate supplies of usable water at reasonable cost, and to guard against excessive deterioration of water quality. The likely effects on the environment of man's activities are investigated and found to be poorly understood at the present time. Research priorities are suggested to supply rapid answers to questions of immediate importance. The applicability of a regional management concept to the North Slope waters is considered …
An Ecological Study Of Butter-Clam (Saxidomus Giganteus) Toxicity In Southeast Alaska, John Chia-Chih Chang
An Ecological Study Of Butter-Clam (Saxidomus Giganteus) Toxicity In Southeast Alaska, John Chia-Chih Chang
Marine Biology
Butter clams (Saxidomus giganteus) at South and North porpoise Islands and Pleasant Island, Southeast Alaska, were occasionally found to accumulate significant amounts (higher than the maximum human tolerance) of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) at any season of the year, and to occasionally lose or regain PSP rapidly between two samplings. The fluctuations of toxicity levels were not similar at all stations and no consistent patterns were Observed. The toxicity of only 19 out of 53 samples collected at three high-toxicity stations exceeded the maximum human tolerance level for PSP (1200 MU), and clam samples taken from moderate and low-toxicity stations …

Seasonal And Spatial Variations In The Water Mass Characteristics Of Muir Inlet, Glacier Bay, Alaska, Alician Veronica Quinlan
Seasonal And Spatial Variations In The Water Mass Characteristics Of Muir Inlet, Glacier Bay, Alaska, Alician Veronica Quinlan
Oceanography
Muir Inlet, a Southeast Alaska fjord with tidal glaciers, is investigated. Its water masses show definite seasonal and spatial responses in temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen distributions and in circulation patterns. Its basin water is continually renewed. Two seasonal parameter structures are found. The winter - spring structure is characterized by the homogeneity of the water masses, with up to 84% of the fjord water having a temperature between 3.0 - 3.5°C and up to 55%, a salinity of 31.3 - 31.4%. The summer - fall fjord water masses are heterogeneous, with temperatures ranging from 0.5 - 7.5°C., salinities from …

A Program For The Collection, Storage, And Analysis Of Baseline Environmental Data For Cook Inlet, Alaska, David G. Wagner, R. Sage Murphy, Charles E. Behlke
A Program For The Collection, Storage, And Analysis Of Baseline Environmental Data For Cook Inlet, Alaska, David G. Wagner, R. Sage Murphy, Charles E. Behlke
WERC Publications
The scope of this report is to provide a general, yet comprehensive, description of the Cook Inlet System which will serve as a basis for understanding the interrelated natural and man-made factors governing its future; to present a program of field research studies for the estuarine environment that will describe the existing state of the Inlet with respect to the water quality and biota; to provide a framework whereby the program of studies can be evaluated and redirected in light of the preliminary results; and, to provide a method of storing and analyzing the data from the investigations so that …
