The Rampart, Manley Hot Springs, And Fort Gibbon Mining Districts Of Alaska., Rosalie E. L'Ecuyer
The Rampart, Manley Hot Springs, And Fort Gibbon Mining Districts Of Alaska., Rosalie E. L'Ecuyer
English
This thesis on the Rampart, Manley Hot Springs, and Fort Gibbon mining districts of Alaska provides the first comprehensive public history of prospecting and mining activity in these three districts within the gold belt of Interior Alaska. Spanning almost one hundred years, the history begins in 1894 and extracts material from early recorders' books, old newspapers, correspondence of miners whose dreams drew them to the gold fields, and U.S. Geological Survey reports which analyzed Alaska's natural resources and mining economy. It surveys mining development from stampedes during the boom years of the turn-into-the-twentieth-century through periods of decline and on into …
Technological Development And Culture Change On St. Lawrence Island: A Functional Typology Of Toggle Harpoon Heads, Michael A. Lewis
Technological Development And Culture Change On St. Lawrence Island: A Functional Typology Of Toggle Harpoon Heads, Michael A. Lewis
Anthropology
Our understanding of the culture history of the Bering Strait region is based on the chronology of St. Lawrence Island toggle harpoon heads proposed by Henry Collins in 1937. Subsequent attempts to develop harpoon head typologies from other parts of the Bering Strait are built on Collins' stylistic classification, which does not account for the full range of variation in St. Lawrence Island harpoon heads. The resulting confusion of harpoon head categories has clouded the interpretation of patterns in the material remains and has perpetuated a unilineal theory of culture change in Bering Strait Eskimo groups. This dissertation critically examines …
Masked Rituals Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dominique Desson
Masked Rituals Of The Kodiak Archipelago, Dominique Desson
Anthropology
The traditional culture of the Alutiiq speakers of the Kodiak Archipelago is not well known, and information on their spiritual and ritual life has been lacking. In this thesis I use ethnographic, ethnohistoric, and iconographic materials to investigate the Koniag traditional world view and belief system and some aspects of the Koniag ritual system. Specifically, I analyze the individual, private masked rituals associated with whaling and the public masked rituals performed during the winter festivals. In the second part, I examine a large sample of surviving Alutiiq masks in order to determine aesthetic canons evident in the work of 19th …
Reconstruction Of Neets'aii Gwich'in Land Use: A Methodological Study., John Carl Peirce
Reconstruction Of Neets'aii Gwich'in Land Use: A Methodological Study., John Carl Peirce
Anthropology
This thesis attempts to determine to what extent land use patterns for the Neets'aii Gwich'in of Alaska can be spatially reconstructed from existing sources. Written narratives are reviewed, such as those related by explorers, missionaries, traders and prospectors, for information on land use. Also reviewed are data that give a broad array of subsistence, demographic, geographical or other relevant information concerning land use, including biological and geological reports, economic studies, census reports, Neets'aii Gwich'in oral narratives, archaeological studies, ethnographic studies, place name studies and maps, and land use and occupancy studies. Methodological models for gathering land use data are reviewed …
The Last Great Indian War (Nulato 1851), Miranda Hildebrand Wright
The Last Great Indian War (Nulato 1851), Miranda Hildebrand Wright
Anthropology
In this study, I review the causes of an Athabaskan conflict in western Alaska which occurred in 1851. This hostility is known in published sources as the Nulato Massacre. In oral tradition the same incident is referred to either as the Last Great Indian War or simply "The Nulato War". Critical reading and analysis of primary and secondary historical source materials offer insight into external pressures on the indigenous population, the analysis of oral tradition the resulting internal pressures. The combination of historic documentation and oral tradition provide a basis for the analysis of the Nulato Massacre as an internecine …

Understanding Loglan., Stephen Leon Rice
Understanding Loglan., Stephen Leon Rice
Linguistics
Loglan is a language designed to help test Whorf's hypothesis that language shapes thought. Specifically, Loglan should encourage more creative and logical thought in its users. Such future users will need a readable textbook of the language; that is the purpose of the present work.
The Middle To Upper Paleolithic Transition In Siberia, Frank E. Goebel
The Middle To Upper Paleolithic Transition In Siberia, Frank E. Goebel
Anthropology
This dissertation presents results of recent research in Siberia directed at (1) developing an accurate archaeological chronology for the mid-Upper Pleistocene of Siberia (chiefly through accelerator radiocarbon methods), and (2) defining and characterizing the region's Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. Eleven Middle Paleolithic sites are now known from southwest Siberia. Relative age estimates of these cultural occupations range from the Last Interglacial (oxygen-isotope substage 5e, 128,000-118,000 years ago) to the mid-Middle Pleniglacial (oxygen-isotope stage 3,50,000-40,000 years ago). Associated lithic industries are Levallois and Mousterian. Middle Paleolithic interassemblage lithic variability is hinged on the differential production of Levallois points and Levallois …
Indigenous Television In The Canadian North: Evolution, Operation, And Impact On Cultural Preservation., William Joel Neuheimer
Indigenous Television In The Canadian North: Evolution, Operation, And Impact On Cultural Preservation., William Joel Neuheimer
Other
Indigenous television broadcasting in the Canadian North has evolved as a successful response to help mitigate the cultural domination imposed over the aboriginal people in the Canadian North via television which originates in the Canadian South and other dominant television producers such as the United States. I have concluded, based on my research and the results from a survey of indigenous people in the Canadian North, that the evolution of indigenous television in the Canadian North has enabled the indigenous people of the Canadian North to achieve greater cultural stability within the increased political empowerment and self-determination that their television …

Alaska Justice Forum ; Vol. 10, No. 4 (Winter 1994), Phyllis Morrow, N/A Bureau Of Justice Statistics, Teresa W. Carns
Vols 01-10 (1977-1994)
The Winter 1994 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum examines some of the salient issues surrounding language, interaction, and legal interpretation in Alaska situations. Associated stories describe policies on interpretation in federal and state courts in Alaska and examples of errors in translation between Yup'ik and English in actual courtroom situations. A National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) report finds that more than 2.5 million women in the United States experience violence annually; although are significantly less likely to become victims of violent crime than men, women are more vulnerable to particular types of perpetrators, including intimates such as husbands or …
