The Summer 1993 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum features an examination, based on courtroom observation, of cultural and linguistic factors that result in miscommunication between English speakers and native Yup'ik speakers in legal and justice contexts. Alutiiq Ethnicity, Patricia Hartley Partnow Apr 1993

Alutiiq Ethnicity, Patricia Hartley Partnow

Anthropology

In this project I consider how Alaska Peninsula Alutiiqs (Pacific Eskimos) maintain and express a sense of continuity with their past and how in today's world they use their understanding of the past to renegotiate and reenact their ethnic identity. I do so through an ethnohistorical reconstruction of Alutiiq ethnic identity from precontact days to the present and through a consideration of the role oral tradition and community ritual play in the constant reformulation of Alutiiq identity. I discuss the symbols considered most diagnostically Alutiiq (i.e., those which make up the Alutiiq identity configuration) and explore their meanings as Alutiiqs …

Continuity And Change In The Wiseman Area Of Alaska: A Look At Land And Renewable Resource Use Over Time, Carol Patricia Scott

Theses (Unassigned)

Land and renewable resource use by residents of the Wiseman area in the central Brooks Range of Alaska was investigated in 1991-1993. The study documents current and historic land and renewable resource use patterns of local residents, records resident and agency management concerns regarding these uses, and analyzes opportunities and constraints that exist for rural Alaskan communities in utilizing renewable resources. The research was accomplished through resident interviews, participant observation of community activities, and review of other community studies. Conclusions include: (1) the Wiseman community exhibits characteristics of a mixed subsistence/cash economy; (2) residents rely on resources harvested in the …

Teaching Economics To Russian Students: Some Preliminary Observations, Gunnar Knapp Apr 1993

Teaching Economics To Russian Students: Some Preliminary Observations, Gunnar Knapp

ISER Reports

In February 1993, I taught a one-week intensive course in "Fundamentals of Market Economics" to thirty-four first and second-year students at Magadan International Pedagogical University in Magadan, Russia. The students, who were enrolled in a new degree program in "Economics and Management," had had only limited previous exposure to the topics usually covered in introductory economics courses in America. My preliminary conclusion from this brief experience in teaching economics to Russian students is that basic principles of economic theory can be taught to Russian students in much the same way as they are taught to American students. Russian students were …

Applicability Of Siberian Placer Mining Technology To Alaska, F.J. Skudrzyk, J.C. Barker, D.E. Walsh, Rocky Macdonald Apr 1991

Applicability Of Siberian Placer Mining Technology To Alaska, F.J. Skudrzyk, J.C. Barker, D.E. Walsh, Rocky Macdonald

MIRL Report Publications

The result of Perestroyka and Glasnost has been an awakening of potential for cooperation between East and West. Nowhere has that been better demonstrated than between Alaska and Magadan Province, USSR. This report summarizes a one year effort financed by ASTF, with participation from several technical organizations, to establish contacts with the Siberian placer mining industry. The purpose of the project was to provide initial assessment of the Soviet technology for placer mining in permafrost. A ten day trip to Magadan province by an ASTF team and a similar length visit to Alaska by the Soviet mining group representing the …

Development In Remote Regions: What Do We Know?, Thomas Morehouse, Lee Huskey Apr 1991

Development In Remote Regions: What Do We Know?, Thomas Morehouse, Lee Huskey

ISER Reports

This article assesses a recent body of research on economic development and socio-political change in northern and other remote regions of developed, western nations. The regions include northern Canada, Alaska, northern Scandinavia, Australia's Northern Territory, and Micronesia. Research topics covered are theoretical perspectives, resource development, Native claims, and village economies. "Remote regions" are physically, economically, and politically distant from centers of wealth and power; they are culturally or ethnically diverse and sparsely settled; and they exhibit extreme limits on their autonomy, self-sufficiency, and welfare. "Development" of these regions is defined as the overcoming of internal and external obstacles to change …

Punishment In Pre-Colonial Indigenous Societies In North America [Chapter], Stephen Conn Apr 1991

Punishment In Pre-Colonial Indigenous Societies In North America [Chapter], Stephen Conn

Book chapters

Using northern Athabascan villages as examples, the author discusses how punishment in indigenous societies was traditionally interwoven with other societal functions. The influence of alcohol and the western legal process changed post-colonial societies and their methods of punishment because punishment decisions in indigenous societies were traditionally arrived at through group deliberation, whereas the western legal system works in a hierarchical fashion. The author concludes that imposition of western-style decision-making disrupted tradtional law ways in post-colonial society.
