In this study, 705 mosquitofish Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard, 1853) were caught in Akgöl Lake near the town of Fethiye in Muğla province between November 1998 and October 1999, and the biological characteristics of their growth, reproduction and feeding were studied in detail. In the mosquitofish population, the 0 aged group comprised 97.58% and the 1+ aged group 2.42%; the proportion of females was 81.40%, and that of males was 18.60%. Total length (TL) varied from 1.3 to 5.5 cm; total weight was between 0.02 and 2.31 g. The average numbers of developing eggs were 21.90 (0+) and 52.81 …

Transversal electromagnetic mode cells (TEM-cells) are used for electromagnetic compatibility measurements (emission and immunity), and for biomedical applications. Over the years, higher and higher frequencies are being used, which demands smaller transmission structures in order to obtain the homogeneous field distribution due to resonance. Such resonance destroys the TEM field, introducing higher order modes. The goal was to design the TEM-cell for GSM frequencies that will have a larger area with a homogeneous field used for testing, while still obtaining the characteristic impedance. Behaviour And Biological Control Of Bacteriocin-Producing Leuconostocs Associated With Spoilage Of Vacuum-Packaged Sucuk, Özlem Osmanağaoğlu

Non-motile, Gram-positive and catalase-negative anaerobic Leuconostoc sp. were found to be involved in the spoilage of vacuum-packaged refrigerated sucuk samples. The spoilage was associated with an accumulation of large quantities of foul-smelling gas and purge in the bag and loss of colour and texture in the meat. Many of these isolates produce bacteriocins, to which the predominant Gram-positive bacteria normally found in these products are sensitive. As the leuconostocs grew at low temperatures and produced bacteriocins, they inhibited the growth of associated sensitive bacteria. Attempts to inoculate purge from spoiled samples into fresh meat, vacuum packaging and refrigeration storage facilitated …

A series of organotin(IV) derivatives with the general formula R_{4 - n}SnL_{n} (where n = 1 or 2, R = Me, Et, n-Bu, Ph and L = 2-(2-fluoro-4-biphenyl)propanoate) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared, multinuclear NMR (^{1}H, ^{13}C, ^{119}Sn), ^{119m}Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Screening tests of these compounds showed that they are highly active against various bacteria and fungi.

Salmonella typhimurium can encounter a wide variety of environments during its life cycle. S. typhimurium can experience and survive dramatic acid stress. However, in vitro the organism is very sensitive to acid. S. typhimurium was adapted to acid by exposure to HCl at pH 5.8 ± 0.1 for one growth cycle. Acid-adapted cells were much better protected from acid death than control cells. The relationship between acid adaptation of S. typhimurium and tolerance to other environmental stresses was also examined. Accumulated poly-\beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) was determined in lactic acid bacteria belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Lactococcus and Streptococcus. Lactobacilli were grown in MRS broth and the others were grown in Elliker broth medium. Cell biomass was obtained by centrifugation. The cell walls were lysed with sodium hypochlorite. Poly-\beta-hydroxybutyrate was extracted using chloroform in a Soxhlet system. Then it was converted to crotonic acid using sulfuric acid and the amount of crotonic acid was measured spectrophotometrically. The yield of poly-\beta-hydroxybutyrate % of cell dry weight of Lactobacillus species was 0.52-25.55%. The values for Lactococcus and Streptococcus species were 0.61-14.81 and 1.20-13.69%, respectively. …

Cytogenetic Effects Of Copper Chloride On The Root Tip Cells Of Helianthus Annuus L., Hüseyi̇n İnceer, Sema Ayaz, Osman Beyazoğlu, Emi̇ne Şentürk

The cytogenetic effects of copper chloride on root tip cells of Helianthus annuus were investigated. Seeds were treated with 10, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L (ppm) of copper chloride for 24 h. It was found that copper chloride has a marked mitodepressive action on mitosis. Mitotic abnormalities were increased and the mitotic index was decreased depending on the concentration of the copper chloride applied.

The pineal hormone melatonin is known to play an important role in mediating photoperiodic messages to the reproductive system in seasonal breeding animals. In this study, we investigated whether a 1 h subcutaneous infusion of 50 ng of melatonin at 2000-2100 hours, effective in causing inhibition of testicular development in the juvenile Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), would cause testicular regression in adults of this species housed on a long photoperiod (LD16:8). In this study, neuroepithelial endocrine cells were for the first time identified in the lung of Rana ridibunda. The presence of these cells was investigated using endocrine markers by the immunohistochemical method at the light microscopic level. Immunoreactive - cells containing serotonin, calcitonin, met-enkephalin and leu-enkephalin were observed alone or in clusters within the respiratory epithelium. In general, clustered - cells containing serotonin were detected among the ciliated cells and goblet cells of the pseudostratified epithelium on apical dilation of the primary septa where the inhaled - air is first met. Phospholipid and triacylglycerol fatty acid compositions from eggs; seventh, eighth and last nymphal stages; and 1, 20- and 40-day-old adult females of the black cricket, Melanogryllus desertus, grown in stock-culture medium under laboratory conditions were analyzed by gas chromatographic methods. A large amount of the fatty acid components at all the development stages of the insects analyzed comprised oleic, linoleic, palmitic and stearic acids. However, palmitoleic, myristic and linolenic acids were also found, at lower levels. There were fluctuations in fatty acid levels at different development stages, such as nymphs and adults. The algae of Yanbolu River were investigated in samples collected from different habitats (epipelic, epilithic) at two stations between October 2000 and September 2001. The flora consisted of 78 taxa belonging to the Bacillariophyta (47 taxa), Cyanophyta (16 taxa), Chlorophyta (14 taxa) and Euglenophyta (1 taxon). The Bacillariophyta was the dominant form of algal flora. Amphora ovalis var. pediculus, Ceratoneis arcus, Cymbella affinis, C. minuta, Didymosphenia geminata, Melosira varians and Synedra ulna were the most frequent taxa in the algal flora. The emergence in Galleria mellonella (L.) larva, which was infected by Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, began on the ninth day after exposure to the former nematode and the sixth day of exposure to the latter nematode (25 ± 0.5 ºC). The average number of nematodes developing in each host was as 13,829, and the range was from 4365 to 27,510 for S. feltiae infection. Failure Of Regeneration Of Sensory Nerve Fibers Following Neonatal Denervation And Crush Lesion In Rats, Jumah Shakhanbeh, Khaled Khleifat

The effects of chronic neonatal denervation and a crush lesion on the regenerative capacity of sensory nerve fibers were studied in rats. After 50 weeks of postnatal denervation, the amplitudes of compound action potentials (CAPs) of A\alpha\beta-, A\delta- and C-fibers were reduced to 14.3%, 18.2% and 37.4%, respectively (P < 0.005). Similarly, after a crush lesion, the amplitudes of CAPs were reduced to 34.3%, 38.8% and 51.6%, respectively (P < 0.005). The conduction velocities, thresholds and maximum strength of stimulation of nerve fibers were normal. Neurogenic plasma extravasation into the skin due to antidromic nerve stimulation was reduced to 27.5% and 30.3% after postnatal denervation and the crush lesion, respectively (P < 0.005). These results indicate that neonatal sensory nerve injury induces permanent neurodegeneration of peripheral sensory nerve fibers as demonstrated by the inhibition of afferent conduction property and efferent neurogenic plasma extravasation response.

The antimutagenic effect of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) was investigated by using the Drosophila wing spot test. In this assay, 3-day-old transheterozygous larvae for the multiple wing hair (mwh, 3-0.3) and flare (flr, 3-38.8) genes were treated with 3 direct acting mutagens: ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) and N-nitroso N-ethylurea (ENU). The results obtained from 3 reference mutagens were clearly genotoxic in the Drosophila wing somatic mutation and recombination test. The calculated concentration of ascorbic acid as recommended dietary allowance (RDA) did not induce the frequency of the mutant clones recorded. Hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}) plays an important role in natural water samples. In this study H_{2}O_{2} concentrations were quantified in different water samples by chemiluminescence detection. This method was chosen because of its high sensitivity and suitability for determining low concentrations of H_{2}O_{2}. H_{2}O_{2} is introduced to the oxidation reaction of alkaline luminol solutions in the presence of Co^{2 + } ion catalyst. When these components are mixed, blue light (\lambda = 440 nm) is emitted. Maximum chemiluminescence intensity occurs within 2 s after mixing and is continuous for up to a few minutes, permitting accurate measurements at selected delay times. …

In this research some physical characteristics of down fibers obtained from hair x Angora (B_1) crossbred goat were examined. The diameter of fiber, natural length, real length and number of crimps of the down fibers were 20.08±0.50 µ, 3.77±0.17 cm, 6.22±0.23 cm and 9.79±0.34, respectively. In addition the strongest color determined in this research were white (63.93%) and light brown (18.03%). According to the diameter of fiber, the down fibers of hair goats induded cashmere (55.33%) cashgora (24.03%) and mohair (20.64%).
