We determined the feeding capacity of Calosoma sycophanta L. (Coleoptera: Carabidae) by feeding them the pine processionary moth (PPM), Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae), under laboratory conditions. C. sycophanta is one of the most important predators of PPM larvae and pupae. Adult C. sycophanta can consume as much as 7-8 times their weight in food per day. On average, each C. sycophanta adult injured 10 PPM larvae while consuming 7 of these prey per day. The adults lived for 3-4 years. When young C. sycophanta larvae feed on 1 PPM larva, they can reach 1.4-1.6 cm in length …

A total of 13 species of Sarcophagidae (Diptera) belonging to 2 subfamilies collected from different localities in Turkey between 1994 and 2006 were examined. Wohlfahrtia meigeni (Schiner, 1862) is recorded for the first time from Turkey. This new record increases the number of flesh flies known from Turkey to 86. New locality records are given for all 13 species.

Developmental time, predation, and reproduction of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot from Hatay on a diet of Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval larvae and protonymphs at temperatures of 20, 25, and 30 °C (75% ± 10% RH and a 14:10-h L:D (light:dark) cycle) were studied. P. persimilis females feeding on T. cinnabarinus larvae completed development in 8.12, 5.79, and 3.88 days at 20, 25, and 30 °C, respectively, during which time the females consumed on average 16.10, 16.09, and 17.18 T. cinnabarinus larvae, respectively. The biology, nymphal stages, and life habits of the endemic dune cricket Schizodactylus inexpectatus (Werner, 1901) (Orthoptera: Schizodactylidae) were investigated in this study carried out between 2000 and 2007 in the Çukurova delta (Adana province) and in Alata (Mersin province), Turkey. The study showed that S. inexpectatus, which is a nocturnal insect, passes through 9 nymphal stages, each characterised by its own body size. The present study showed that certain properties of burrows, such as their depths, do not depend on either adult or immature stages of the insect. Mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA was used to elucidate the pattern of relationships and systematic status of 4 genera, including 9 species of skates (Rostroraja alba, Leucoraja fullonica, Dipturus oxyrinchus, D. batis, Raja clavata, R. montagui, R. asterias, R. miraletus, and R. radula), living in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The 16S rDNA dataset contained 39 variable and 29 parsimony informative sites. The mean nucleotide diversity (Pi) was 0.018. The genetic distances between pairs of species showed genetic homogeneity between R. clavata and R. montagui. A total of 37 specimens of Aspidosiphon (Aspidosiphon) elegans were collected at 5 stations located along the Levantine coast of Turkey and at 1 station located near Foça (Aegean Sea). This species inhabited calcareous rocks, the mussel Branchidontes pharaonis, and the alga Corallina mediterranea between 0 and 3 m depths. The population density of this species in the area was found to be 25 ind. M^{-2}. As Aspidosiphon (A.) elegans is a bio-eroder species, its high population density may cause serious damage to coralligenous habitats. G- And C-Banded Karyotype Of Cricetulus Migratorius Pallas, 1773 (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Central Anatolia, Ati̇lla Arslan, Şükri̇ye Akan

The present study reports the banding patterns (G- and C-banding) of chromosomes of Cricetulus migratorius from Central Anatolia. Karyotype of C. migratorius comprised (2n) 22 chromosomes. The number of chromosomal arms (FN) was 44 and the number of autosomal arms (FNa) was 40. Subtelocentric X and Y chromosomes were very similar in size, but they differed on G- and C-banding patterns. Most autosomes in this species were C-negative. Pair no. 4 had very small centromeric C-bands, autosome no. 8 possessed an under-centromeric heterochromatin block, and the distal part of chromosome no. 9 had a C-positive band. The present study was carried out during 2006 and 2007 in a eucalyptus planted area in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The eulophid species Quadrastichodella nova Girault (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) was collected on Eucalyptus spp. seed capsules for the first time in Turkey. This species induces galls on the seeds, attaining low levels of infestation. The plant species Eucalyptus camaldulensis L. (Myrtaceae) is reported as new host for Q. nova.

In this study, the age and growth of Himri Barbel (Barbus luteus Heckel, 1843) were determined based on specimens collected from Orontes River-Turkey, during the period from February 2004 to January 2005. This population comprised 7 age groups of males and 9 of females. The male and female ratio was 1:1.26 (M:F). Total length-weight relationship was estimated as W = 0.0129TL^{2.986} for females, W = 0.0125TL^{3.003} for males. The results of an earthworm survey of 11 different localities in the city of İzmir (Turkey) are presented. The samples were collected by digging and hand sorting. The 3 following species belonging to 3 different genera were identified in the studied regions: Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa trapezoides and Dendrobaena veneta. In addition, juvenile specimens representing the genera Dendrobaena, Lumbricus, and Allolobophora were collected.

Elaeagnus umbellata (Thunb.), commonly known as autumn olive, belongs to the family Elaeagnaceae and is native to the Himalayan regions of Pakistan, China, and India and is also found in Korea and Japan. The seeds of 8 ecotypes from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, were analyzed at UPM Malaysia for comparisons of their relationship and evolution based on SDS-PAGE of total seed proteins. Aims: To investigate radiation-induced oxidative damage in erythrocytes after administration of radioiodine-131 (^{131}I) in patients with hyperthyroidism. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with hyperthyroidism (11 F, 9 M) treated with ^{131}I were included into the study. Blood samples were taken from patients just before, 1 hour after and 3 hours after applying radioiodine. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and levels of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured to evaluate the radiation-induced oxidative damage. Aim: To document the efficacy of low-dose long-term oral macrolide treatment in the management of sinonasal polyposis. The study was designed prospectively in a group of patients with sinonasal polyposis and negative history of surgery. Materials and Methods: Ten patients were administered roxithromycin (RXM) 150 mg/day single oral dose for eight weeks. All patients underwent Tc-99m rhinoscintigraphic evaluation of mucociliary activity and endoscopic evaluation before and after the treatments. Agro-industrial waste presents an alternative to inorganic fertilizer. It is possible to use tobacco waste as a soil amendment due to its high organic matter and low toxic element content. Tobacco waste compost (TWC) and farmyard manure (FYM) were applied to Typic Xerofluvent soil at various ratios, and butter-head lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Capitata L.) was grown. The effects on soil organic C and total N content, soil microbial biomass, soil respiration, activity of 4 enzymes (dehydrogenase, urease, alkaline phosphatase, and \beta-glucosidase), and lettuce yield were determined. Isozymes from 12 enzyme systems extracted from haploid female gametophytes of the seeds were separated by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Predatory behaviour, prey consumption, and foraging cycle of adults and larvae of Scymnus levaillanti Muls. and Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated using a video/computer recording and measurement system. Larvae of S. levaillanti spent more time in feeding activities compared to C. sanguinea. Adults of both S. levaillanti and C. sanguinea spent more time in non-feeding activities (digestion and cleaning) compared to their larvae whilst adults of S. levaillanti spent less time in non-feeding activities than those of C. sanguinea. A total of 35 Rhizobium sp. were isolated from the root nodules of Trifolium alexandrinum (Egyptian clover) irrigated with treated tannery effluents and characterised on the basis of morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. Rhizospheric soils and plant parts were also analysed for metal concentrations by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The test soil samples were contaminated with a high level of chromium and also with other heavy metals, i.e. Ni, Zn, Cu, and Cd. Microbes are important catalysts to regulate functional properties of terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, rhizosphere and phyllosphere bacteria were isolated from wheat and peas and examined for their plant growth promoting properties. The effects of bacterial inoculants on the growth of peas and wheat were studied in a series of pot experiments using loamy sand soil. The results showed that the colonisation of bacteria was higher in the rhizosphere as compared to the phyllosphere of both plants. An experiment was conducted to assess the response of mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) to 28-homobrassinolide (HBL) supplied to the seeds (1.0 µM) and/or to the foliage (0.01 µM) of the plants. Samples of the treated plant materials were assessed 30 and 50 days after sowing (DAS). It was observed that the activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA) and nitrate reductase (NR), leaf chlorophyll content (Chl), net photosynthetic rate (P_N), stomatal conductance (gs), carboxylation efficiency (CE), dry mass (DM), pod number, and seed yield at harvest increased significantly over the control, irrespective of the mode of application. Drought stress was generated by PEG 6000. Water potentials were: zero as the control, and -0.15, -0.49, -1.03, and -1.76 MPa as treatments. After 24-h treatment the total soluble protein content of 2 maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars (704 and 301) was determined and SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis in the first dimension was performed. By decreasing water potentials, total soluble protein content first increased, and then decreased in the roots and leaves of both varieties. Traditionally corn silk (CS) has been used as diuretic, antilithiasic, uricosuric, and antiseptic. It is used for the treatment of edema as well as for cystitis, gout, kidney stones, nephritis, and prostatitis. In the present study, the antioxidant properties of ethanol-water extract from CS were estimated by different methods. Also phenol and flavonoid content of the extract were measured by Folin Ciocalteu and AlCl_3 assays. CS extract contained a significant amount of phenol and flavonoids. The methanolic crude extracts of some commonly used medicinal plants were screened for their free radical scavenging properties using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The overall antioxidant activity of green tea (Camellia sinensis Linn.) was the strongest, followed in descending order by black tea (Camellia sinensis Linn.), Eugenia caryophyllus (Spreng.) Bullock and Harrison, Piper cubeba Linn., Zingiber officinale Roscoe and Piper nigrum Linn. Trigonella foenum graecum Linn. and Elettaria cardamomum (Linn.) Antibacterial Activities Of Aqueous And Alcoholic Extracts Of 34 Indian Medicinal Plants Against Some Staphylococcus Species, Jigna Parekh, Sumitra Chanda

Thirty-four Indian medicinal plants belonging to 28 different families were screened for potential antibacterial activity against 3 Staphylococcus species, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus subflava. Antibacterial activity of aqueous and alcoholic extracts was performed by agar disc diffusion method and agar well diffusion method. The alcoholic extracts were more active than aqueous extracts for all the plants studied. The most susceptible bacterium was S. aureus. The methanol extract of Woodfordia fruticosa showed the best antibacterial activity. The in vitro susceptibility testing of the studied staphylococcus strains was done against standard antibiotics.
