Two different types of explant (proximal and flamingo-bill) from Emphasis seedlings, a hybrid cultivar of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Stand.), germinated under dark and light conditions were cultured on 9 regeneration MS media containing various combinations of BA (0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg l^{-1}) and IAA (0, 0.25, and 0.5 mg l^{-1}). Comparison of the explant types showed that the flamingo-bill type explant had better shoot formation than did the proximal explant. The MS medium containing 1 mg l^{-1} of BA was optimal for shoot formation capacity when flamingo-bill type explants germinated in the dark (44%) and light (36%) …

The present study was conducted to examine the effects of bio-priming with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on the germination of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seeds under different saline (NaCl) conditions. Three radish cultivars ('Antep', 'Beyaz', and 'Siyah') were used as plant material and 5 bacteria strains (Agrobacterium rubi strain A 16, Burkholderia gladii strain BA 7, Pseudomonas putida strain BA 8, Bacillus subtilis strain BA 142, and Bacillus megaterium strain M 3) were applied as priming agent. The differences in the reproductive biology of overwintered (OW) and F_1 generation of Trissolcus semistriatus Nees and T. festivae Victorov (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions. The experiments were conducted to evaluate oviposition period, lifetime fecundity, female progeny, sex ratio, and longevity of OW and F_1 generation with the two species as factors. The results of this study showed that the oviposition period of F_1 generation was longer than that of OW females for both of the two parasitoid species. The biology of Cales noacki Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a particular parasitoid of the woolly whitefly, Aleurothrixus floccosus Maskell (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was investigated under laboratory conditions, where the effects of different temperatures [18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 18/26, 26/34 °C] and the longevity of adults on different diets [sugar water (10%), water with honey (10%), water, honeydew of A. floccosus, 1^{st} instar larvae of A. floccosus, or no food] were observed. Orthotomicus tridentatus Eggers, 1921 (Col.: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) is the most important forest pest of cedar stands in Turkey. Yet, very little is known about its distribution and biology. Therefore, the distribution and biological characteristics of O. tridentatus were studied in the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey between 2006 and 2008. It was determined to be a species common to all cedar forests. The length of adults was between 2.5 and 3.9 mm and the main galleries were 'S' shaped. Integrated weed management programs require a clear understanding of the mechanisms influencing the establishment, growth, and reproduction of unwanted plants (weeds) in agro-ecosystems. This study evaluates the effect of long-term (95 years after the establishment of the site) crop rotation and chemical fertilizers on the weed community dynamics in spring barley at the Agricultural University of Timiriazev, Agricultural Site in Moscow. Weed flora of winter and spring small grain crops (wheat, barley, oats, and rye) was surveyed in lowland and mountainous areas of the central part of Serbia, which are dissimilar in environmental conditions, primarily climate and soil characteristics, and crop management practices. The weed community of the mountainous area was more diverse that of the lowlands. Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) is a widespread and important forest tree species in Turkey, occurring mainly in southern, western, and northwestern Turkey, while the natural occurrence of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) is restricted to 2 locations and is found sympatrically with Turkish red pine. In the present study sympatric populations of both species from Muğla and Adana provinces in Turkey were sampled, and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) region of ribosomal DNA was comparatively studied with sequence analysis. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to evaluate genetic similarity and inter-relationship among 18 citrus cultivars, including 13 species and 5 hybrids. Out of 40 decamer primers screened, 25 were selected which produced 250 markers; of which 231 were polymorphic and some species or cultivar specific RAPD markers. The Jaccard coefficient was used to calculate the genetic similarity. UPGMA was used to generate the dendrogram which clearly separated Jatti-Khatti from all major clusters at a similarity coefficient of 0.61. During a survey on the occurrence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey, a heterorhabditid species was isolated using the Galleria-baiting technique. Based on morphology and morphometrics, the isolate was identified as Heterorhabditis megidis. Sequences of the ITS region of its rDNA confirmed this identification. The species is recorded for the first time from Turkey. A more intensive survey to determine the distribution of this species, covering all parts of the Black Sea region of Turkey, is currently underway.

The present study investigated the biochemical mechanism of abamectin resistance in a Tetranychus urticae Koch population collected from a bean greenhouse (BEYO 2) in Beyobası village in Gazipaşa district, Antalya province, and maintained in the laboratory. LC_{50, 60, 90} levels of BEYO 2 population of T. urticae were determined using a dry film method. The LC50 level of the BEYO 2 strain with abamectin was selected 15 times and was increased from 2.42 µL 100 mL^{-1} water to 38.67 µL 100 mL^{-1} water. Microbial biomass and enzyme activity were compared in vineyard soils managed by organic and conventional practices under Mediterranean conditions during the growing. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cv. Tetraflorum sown with different inter-row spacings and seeding rates was grown under the agroecological conditions of Western Serbia. Field experiments were carried out between 2002 and 2006, and biometric characteristics-generative tillers, seed yield, and shoot dry mass-were measured during the first production year. Italian ryegrass was grown with 3 row spacings (20, 40, and 60 cm), using 4 seeding rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 kg ha^{-1}). In this study the proportion of lignin in wood tissue was analysed in 36 Scots pines differing in their form of dead bark. Material for analyses came from pure pine stands aged 89-91 years located in northern Poland. Chemical analyses were performed in the mature wood zone comprising the last 10 diameter increments located at a height of 1.3 m (DBH). Results indicate differences in lignin content and growth rate in pines whose stems were characterized by different forms of dead bark. Phyllody is a serious disease of sesame in Pakistan. In the present study investigations were carried out on the symptomatology, etiology, and transmission of this disease. Floral virescence, phyllody, and proliferation are the most common symptoms. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by yellowing, cracking of seed capsules, germination of seeds in capsules, and formation of dark exudates on the foliage. Shoot apex fasciation has also been occasionally observed, but no phytoplasma DNA has been detected in fasciated plants using PCR assays. Light microscopy of hand-cut sections treated with Dienes' stain showed blue areas in the phloem region of phyllody-infected plants. …

Partitioning gross rainfall (GR) into throughfall (TF), stemflow (SF), and interception loss (I), which has a very significant effect on water balance and the nutrient cycle in forest ecosystems, was studied in a natural oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) forest situated in the Caspian Forest of northern Iran. Commercial timbers from Turkey used in coastal construction and boat building were tested for their resistance to marine wood-boring invertebrates in a marine trial and in a laboratory screening test. The timbers tested were beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), oak (Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.), chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The marine trial was conducted over a period of 5 months at Mersin on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Pathogenic characterization of 64 Didymella rabiei isolates obtained from 5 different regions in Turkey was determined with a set of 7 different chickpea cultivars (ILC 1929, F8, ICC 1903, ILC 249, ILC 482, ILC 3279, and ICC 3996). All the isolates were classified into both 3 pathotypes and 6 physiological races. Of the isolates used in this study, it was determined that 38 (59.4%) belonged to pathotype I, 3 (4.7%) to pathotype II, and 23 (35.9%) to pathotype III. Aim: In this study, we aimed to assess the expression of CD117 in a large series of both Hodgkin´s and non-Hodgkin´s lymphoma, and to investigate the association between the expression patterns of CD117, IRF4/MUM1, and CD38. Materials and Methods: A total of 237 lymphoma cases were selected and examined within six tissue microarray paraffin blocks. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against CD117, IRF4/MUM1 and CD38. Results: CD117 and IRF4/MUM1 immunoreactivity were seen in a subset of high-grade and low-grade B-cell lymphomas, as well as T-cell lymphomas and classical type Hodgkin´s lymphomas. Aim: This study was performed to determine the effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) treatment on levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) and activities of antioxidant enzymes in retinas of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven rats were enrolled and divided into three groups: group 1: non-diabetic rats as control (n = 9); group 2: STZ-induced, untreated diabetic rats (n = 8); and group 3: STZ-induced, CAPE-treated diabetic rats (n = 10). Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress measured by serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and to evaluate their possible correlation with the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and pneumonia severity index (PSI). Materials and Methods: The PSI, chest X-ray (CXR) scores, and the serum TAC, MDA, and CRP levels were determined in 67 CAP patients on admission and compared to 45 healthy controls. An in vitro regeneration protocol through stem callus culture has been standardized for the medicinal climber Clematis gouriana. The explant induced callus on MS-medium supplemented with 0.5 to 1.5 mg l^{-1} BAP and 0.1 to 0.5 mg l^{-1} NAA. The optimized callus induction occurred at the concentration of 1.0 mg l^{-1} BAP and 0.3 mg l^{-1} NAA. The transaldolase gene (tal) of Anabaena sp. PCC7120 was interrupted by the insertion of the interposon W. Transaldolase assays showed that the tal mutant strain possessed the same activity as the wild-type, indicating that the second copy of the gene complements the enzyme activity. Being coded by a gene (zwf) downstream of tal and probably in the same operon, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity was also analysed. Only 34% of wild-type G6PDH activity was retained in the tal mutant strain. This may have due to the polar affect of tal mutation on the transcription of the zwf gene. Growth of the …

Ampullinid gastropods are useful in correlating the Palaeogene marine strata of Central Anatolia. Ampullinid gastropods are found in the Late Paleocene-Early Eocene Kırkkavak Formation in the Macunköy area (Polatlı, west of Ankara). In the Haymana-Polatlı Basin, a variety of Globularia (Swainson 1840) species is described from the upper part of the Kırkkavak Formation, including G. sireli n.sp. The other taxa are G. vapincana (d´Orbigny 1850), G. grossa (Deshayes 1864) and G. crassatina (Lamarck 1804). The Kırkkavak fauna is known in western and central Europe, and central Asia. Tissues of the spikes of Orobanche spp. contain phenols and mannitol pathways, and it seems that it is very resistant, or may be immune, to bacterial infection. Therefore extracts of 3 Orobanche species, O. cernua, O. crenata, and O. egyptiaca, were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against local isolates of crown gall (Agrobacterium) and soft rot (Erwinia) phytopathogens. Extract of O. cernua showed the highest activity against both pathogens with clear inhibition zones of 8-24 mm and 12-16 mm in diameters, respectively. An anther culture method was used for the production of doubled haploids (DHs) in Lithuanian barley and potato cultivars that were directly regenerated from embryoids (Caredda´s method) were applied to determine androgenic potential according to the green regenerant yield and other morphogenetic factors. Green DH regenerants were obtained in 3 Lithuanian spring barley cultivars (´Aidas´, ´Alsa´, and ´Auksiniai´) out of 10 studied. The highest rate of embryoid formation was determined in cv. ´Auksiniai 3´, representing 580.0 embryoids per 100 responding anthers.
