A Facile Method For The Preparation Of Poly(4-Vinylpyridine) Nanoparticles And Their Characterization, Nurettin Sahiner
A Facile Method For The Preparation Of Poly(4-Vinylpyridine) Nanoparticles And Their Characterization, Nurettin Sahiner
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Submicron size particles were synthesized from 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) using an oil-in-water emulsion system. Divinyl benzene (DVB) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were utilized as crosslinkers for the synthesis of p(4-VP) hydrogel nanoparticles in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant systems. Characterization of the particles was made by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods. To render a positive charge, p(4-VP) particles were reacted with 1-bromo butane (1-BB).

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Substituted 4-chromenes were synthesized via the Grignard coupling reaction of various substituted phenyl- and benzylmagnesium chlorides with 2,2-dimethyl-7-(prop-2-ynyloxy)chroman-4-one (1) in relatively good yield (60%-85%). The benzylic-substituted derivatives were a mixture of 2 exo and endo regioisomers, and the exo compounds were a mixture of E and Z isomers. Structural analysis of the exo and endo isomers, as well as E and Z of exo isomers were based on H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and NOESY experiments. The synthetic compounds were examined for in vitro activity against Leishmania major and compound 9 (a, b) was the most active, with inhibitory activity of 36%.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Thin-layer chromatography on rice starch support and aqueous ammonia--organic modifier (methanol, dioxane, and acetone) mobile phases was used to study the effect on retention of the chromatographic system and the physicochemical properties of twelve 2,4-dioxotetrahydro-1,3-thiazoles. A multivariate approach to the retention behaviour of the investigated compounds with 3 quite different organic solvents was used to explain the interactions between the 1,3-thiazoles and the mobile phases. Partial least-squares (PLS) regression was used to quantify differences between the observed data and recognize the molecular properties with the greatest effect on retention for each modifier. Good correlation was obtained between experimental and calculated …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Nickel(II) dipicolinate complex containing 2-amino-4- methylpyrimidine (2A-4Mpy), [Ni(2A-4Mpy)(dpc) (H_2O)_2] . 2H_2O was synthesized in solid state and its structural and spectroscopic properties were determined by XRD, IR, and UV-Vis techniques. The crystal data revealed that the Ni complex is in triclinic crystal systems with space group P-1 and Z = 2. The Ni(II) ion is bonded to dipicolinate ligand through pyridine N atom together with one O atom of each carboxylate group, 2 aqua ligands, and the N atom of 2-amino-4-methylpyrimidine, forming distorted octahedral geometry. IR and UV-Vis spectra of the complexes all agree with the observed crystal structure.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This paper presents the structure and antibacterial properties of some complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) with a new Schiff base N-(2-furanylmethylene)-3- aminodibenzofuran. The structure of each complex was characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR, UV-Vis, ^1H-NMR, and ESR), conductometric and magnetic data, and thermogravimetric and elementary analysis. According to these data, we propose an octahedral geometry for Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes, and a tetrahedral geometry for Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) complexes. Antibacterial activity of the ligand and its complexes was tested against selected bacteria. The ligand and all the complexes possess antimicrobial activity, and antimicrobial activity …

The Effects Of Oral Administration Of An Aqueous Extract Of Ficus Bengalensis Stem Bark On Some Hematological And Biochemical Parameters In Rats With Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes, Mahalingam Gayathri, Krishnan Kannabiran
Turkish Journal of Biology
The effects of sub-chronic administration of an aqueous extract of Ficus bengalensis stem bark on hematological and biochemical parameters in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were evaluated. The possible protective effect of the F. bengalensis (500 mg/kg of body weight per day) extract on STZ-induced changes was evaluated over 12 weeks. The parameters evaluated were plasma proteins, including total protein albumin and globulin, non-protein nitrogenous substances, including urea, uric acid, and creatinine, and hematological indices, including total hemoglobin content, erythrocytes, leucocytes, and platelets counts. The aqueous extract had a significant (P < 0.05) protective effect against STZ-induced changes in terms of the markers of protein metabolism and hematological indices. Furthermore, increases in levels of non-protein nitrogenous substances were normalized in response to the administration of the extract. Thus, the aqueous extract of F. bengalensis had a significant protective effect on STZ-induced changes to biochemical and hematological parameters in the diabetic rats.

Turkish Journal of Biology
EMS was used as a mutagen in Capsicum annuum L. to isolate karyomorphological mutants. Seeds of Capsicum annuum L. var Azad were first pre-soaked in distilled water and then treated with 0.5% solution of EMS for 3 durations, i.e. 3, 5, and 7 h, and genetic segregation was closely observed. Many chromosomal anomalies like stickiness, bridges, and multivalent, secondary associations, laggards, and precocious movement were observed after all 3 durations of treatment. These anomalies showed a dose-dependent increase in frequency. The morphological parameters showed a decreasing trend along with the increasing dose. In vitro investigation of the vibriocidal activity of acetone extracts of Saraca indica Linn (Caesalpinaceae) and Datura stramonium Linn (Solanaceae), and aqueous extracts of Allium sativum Linn (Liliaceae) showed that they have antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant human pathogens. Disc diffusion assay showed that there was significant concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against standard strains of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and 12 multidrug-resistant isolates of Vibrio cholerae non-O1. The crude plant extracts had zones of inhibition in the range of 7-27 mm against 1 or more test bacteria, with MIC ranging from 2.5 to 15 mg/ml. Acetone extracts of S. indica and D. …

The therapeutic properties of plants, including antioxidant and antibacterial activity, have been investigated. In the present study the petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Diospyros ebenum Roxb. were evaluated for DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl) free radical scavenging (antioxidant) activity and antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity was determined against Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29737, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC23564, and Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC13048 using the agar well diffusion method. Total phenolic and flavonoid content of these extracts was determined as the gallic acid and quercetin equivalent, respectively. Results show that the methanol extract was active against all 5 bacterial …
