The presence of a Raphidascarid parasitic nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) in the sparid fish Sparus aurata and Diplodus vulgaris was investigated in this study. A total of 471 individuals (208 Sparus aurata and 263 Diplodus vulgaris) collected for this purpose from the Gulf of Mersin between May 2003 and April 2004 were examined. Seasonal variation in the intensity (MI: mean ± SD) and prevalence (P: %) of the parasite were also determined and the highest P and MI values were found in June 2003 (3.5 ± 0.71 and 8.70%) for S. aurata and March 2004 (4.0 ± 0 and …

Identification And Characterization Of Hydrolytic Enzymes From The Midgut Of The Cotton Bollworm, Helicoverpa Armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Ebru Özgür, Meral Yücel, Hüseyi̇n Avni̇ Öktem

Midgut hydrolytic enzymes of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were identified and partially characterized. K_m, V_{max}, optimum pH, and specific activity were determined for proteolytic enzymes and \alpha-amylases. All hydrolytic enzyme activity had an optimum pH value in the alkaline pH range. We observed major serine protease activity, together with minor cysteine-like activity, the former being significantly inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) and aprotinin. Moreover, different degrees of inhibition were observed with synthetic protease inhibitors. Electrophoretic methods revealed 3 isozymes of \alpha-amylases, of which 2 had higher molecular weight and were more active than the other. Inhibition of amylolytic …

Leaves from 58 fig tree accessions showing different severity of mosaic and necrotic symptoms were collected in 2 different regions of Turkey and analysed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and RT-PCR to determine putative causal agents of fig mosaic disease (FMD). Ultrastructural studies showed that double membrane-bound bodies (DMBs) were mainly observed in the parenchyma and mesophyll cells of infected leaves of the cultivars Göklop and Morgüz and some seedlings showing only mosaic symptoms. Production And Characterization Of Multifunctional Endoxylanase By Bacillus Sp. X13, Ashabil Aygan, Burhan Arikan

A multifunctional endoxylanase producing Bacillus sp. was isolated from soil. Enzyme synthesis occurred at temperatures between 20 °C and 60 °C with an optimum 37 °C. Analysis of the enzyme by SDS-PAGE revealed 4 active enzyme bands, which were estimated to be 66.5 kDa, 80.6 kDa, 95.5 kDa, and 108.4 kDa. The enzyme has a broad temperature range, between 20 and 90 °C, with an optimum at 40 °C; and maximum activity was at pH 6.0. A new tetraoxime, (H_4L), was prepared in EtOH by reacting biphenyl-3,3´,4,4´-tetramine with butane-2,3-dione oxime. The tetraoxime ligand was characterized by elemental analyses, H-NMR and ^{13}C-NMR, IR, and mass spectral studies. Dinuclear copper(II), nickel(II) and tetranuclear copper(II) complexes of tetraoxime ligand were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, IR, and mass spectral studies. In the dinuclear metal complexes, metal:ligand ratio was found as 2:1. Elemental analyses and stoichiometric and spectroscopic data of the metal complexes indicated that the metal ions were coordinated to the nitrogen atoms of oxime groups (C=N). We report a short and efficient 3-component reaction for synthesis of a series of [1,2-b]pyrrole derivatives from ninhydrin, alkyl propiolates, and simple primary amines under solvent free and microwave irradiation. This method provides a new route to produce pyrrole derivatives in good to excellent yields.

A plaque-purified genotypic variant, derived from a field isolate of the Malacosoma neustria nucleopolyhedrovirus (ManeNPV) from Turkey was characterized based on in vitro replication properties in a cell line, Md203 derived from Malacosoma disstria. The life cycle of ManeNPV was studied based on the cytopathic effects (CPEs), polyhedral inclusion body (PIB) formation, budded virus (BV) production, viral DNA replication and polyhedrin protein expression in ManeNPV-infected Md203 cells. Gamma irradiation can induce beneficial as well as deleterious impacts on chromosome behavior in crop plants. The cytogenetic changes occurring due to the storage of inbred seeds after gamma irradiation in the somatic and gametic cells of Zea mays L. were investigated in this study. A wide spectrum of chromosomal anomalies was encountered in somatic and gametic cells of maize that are gamma irradiated, stored (aged), and treated with a combination of both of these treatments. Superoxide dismutases (SODs) have been identified as essential components in an organism´s defence mechanism. This study was devoted to the investigation of SOD activity in 13 durum wheat landraces from Iran and Azerbaijan under 2 (drought and normal) conditions. The effect of drought stress on SOD, chlorophyll content index (CCI), and chlorophyll degradation were studied. Cyclamen trochopteranthum O.Schwarz has a confusing history, having been identified in the last part of the 19^{th} century and described as Cyclamen alpinum Sprenger. It remained known as C. alpinum until 1975, when it was described as C. trochopteranthum by Otto Schwarz. Cyclamen trochopteranthum is a species distributed in the south-western part of Turkey, but the C. trochopteranthum described in 1975 is today describe again as Cyclamen alpinum. The Genus Halothamnus Jaub. & Spach (Chenopodiaceae) In Turkey, Helmut Freitag, Vagif Atamov, Esat Çeti̇n, Mustafa Aslan

The semidesert taxon Halothamnus (Chenopodiaceae), which is confirmed to supersede the later Aellenia, is represented in Turkey by H. glaucus subsp. glaucus and H. hierochunticus. The former was known to occur in Kars and Ağri provinces but was found recently in Kayseri province as well. The latter is a new record for the flora of Turkey from Şanlıurfa province close to the Syrian border. Full descriptions of the genus and the species occurring in Turkey are given and the case of Aellenia is discussed. Images and distributional data including maps are provided.

Nine species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from various provinces of Turkey. Five species of these (Endococcus janae, Lichenochora aprica, Pronectria xanthoriae, Sarcopyrenia cylindrospora, and Zwackhiomyces cervinae) are reported for the first time from Turkey. All these taxa, except Zwackhiomyces cervinae, are also new to Asia. Comments on their habitats and substrata and a short diagnosis are provided for each new taxon new to Turkey.

The diversity and host specificity of endophytic and Rhizoctonia-like fungi were investigated in orchids from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Endophytic fungi from various Aegean and Mediterranean orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis (L.) L.C.M.Richard, Orchis sancta L., Ophrys fusca Link., and Serapias vomeracea subsp. orientalis Greuter) were isolated and identified partially. Surface sterilisation of roots and tubers was carried out in laminar airflow under aseptic conditions. Several modified methods for the isolation of symbiotic fungi from orchid roots and tubers were used. Cosmarium botrytis Menegh. ex Ralfs var. tumidum Wolle, Cosmarium notabile Bréb. var. transiens Insam et Krieger, Cosmarium tetragonum (Näg.) Arch. in Pritchard var. tetragonum, and Cosmarium vogesiacum Lemaire var. alpinum (Schmidle) Laporte are recorded for the first time for the desmid flora of Turkey. The desmids are recorded from Yedigöller Lakes in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey.

A number of records of rotifers from Turkey are discussed. An account is given on trophi morphology in 4 species of Asplanchna Gosse, 1850. Cephalodella segersi De Smet, 1998 is recorded for the second time after its description, and Lecane shieli Segers and Sanoamuang, 1994 is recorded from Turkey for the first time. Both these and a population of Hexarthra polyodonta polyodonta (Hauer, 1957) from the species’ type locality, Lake Van, are illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques.

This study was based on 8 species of 5 genera of Phytoseiidae of the order Mesostigmata (Acari) found in 67 samples. These specimens were collected from Hakkari province in 2005 and 2006. Among the species, Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) tamaricis Kolodochka, 1982 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. The descriptions and drawings of female T. (A.) tamaricis are given in this paper. The distribution of each species, worldwide and in Turkey, is also presented.

The Heteroptera fauna in east Azerbaijan and west Azerbaijan provinces in northwestern Iran was surveyed during 2005-2006. In all, 73 species from 18 families were collected and identified, of which 1 species, Mozena lunata (Burmeister, 1835) (Coreidae), is a new record for the Palearctic ecozone and 6 species are newly recorded from Iran.

Twenty-nine species belonging to 17 genera of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae are reported from the Central Anatolian and the Mediterranean regions of Turkey. Detailed distributions of these species in these 2 regions are given. Seventeen species are newly recorded from central Anatolia and 10 from the Mediterranean region. Datonychus urticae (Boheman, 1845) is a new record for Turkey.
