The karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of southern catfish, Glyptothorax silviae Coad, 1981, was investigated for the first time by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from gill epithelial and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 52. The karyotype consisted of 9 pairs of metacentric, 14 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The arm number was 98. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this catfish. Comparison of the chromosome number of this fish with that of the other members of subfamily Glyptosterninae shows that 2n = 52 may be regarded as …

A new Elateridae species, Agriotes platiai n. sp., is described from Ankara and Yozgat provinces in Turkey. Photographs of the entire body and aedeagus, drawings of the antenna and aedeagus, and differential diagnosis are given.

The characteristic features of Oecobius rhodiensis Kritscher, 1966 and Oecobius teliger O.P.-Cambridge, 1872, which are recorded for the first time in Turkey, are presented in this paper. Identification keys for the Turkish species, digital and SEM photographs, and drawings of genitalia of the new recorded species are also given together with their zoogeographical distributions.

The parasitoid complex of several lepidopteran pests were studied in maize plantations in the Southeast Anatolian Region of Turkey during 2003-2004. Apenteles sp., Bracon hebetor (Say.), Chelonus oculator Panzer, Meteorus rubens Nees (Hym.: Braconidae), Conomorium patulum Walk. (Hym.: Pteromalidae), Diadegma crassicornis (Gray.) subsp. africator Aubert (Hym.: Ichneumonidae), Euplectrus sp. (Hym.: Eulophidae), Exorista larvarum (Linnaeus), E. xanthaspis (Wiedemann) Gonia bimaculata Wiedemann, Drino imberbis (Wiedemann), Pseudogonia rufifrons (Wiedemann), and Linnaemya neavei Curran (Dip.: Tachinidae) were reared from field-collected larvae. Four oppioid (Oribatida:Oppioidea) mite species, namely Berniniella (Berniniella) parasigma Iturrondobeitia, 1987, Autogneta (Rhaphigneta) numidiana (Grandjean, 1960), Conchogneta dalecarlica (Forsslund, 1947), and Lauroppia tenuipectinata Subías and Rodríguez, 1987, recorded from Artvin province are given with their original figures. Some of their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented. All of them are new records for the Turkish fauna.

Among the Asilidae specimens collected from various locations of Turkey during 1994-2007, 2 Dioctria species, Dioctria arcana Richter, 1966 and Dioctria meyeri Nowicki, 1867, are recorded for the first time from Turkey. New distribution areas for previously known species, Dioctria abdominalis Becker, 1923, Dioctria atricapilla Meigen, 1804, Dioctria flavipennis Meigen, 1820, and Dioctria valida Loew, 1856, are added.

The histological changes of gonads were studied in Aphanius persicus from the Barm-e-Shoor spring (south of Iran). The gonads were extracted and prepared histologically. The maturity stage of each specimen was examined according to size and weight of gonad, degree of occupation in the body cavity, the type and number of germinal cells (in testis) and follicles (in ovary). We have described 5 sexual stages for females and 4 for males. The total length and body and gonad weight of each specimen increased with increasing maturity stages. Studies of Opisthobranchia diversity in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea are scarce. In the present study Opisthobranchia species collected along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey in 2004 and 2005 were evaluated. Samples were taken from Çanakkale Strait and the northern coast of Gelibolu Peninsula in the northern Aegean Sea, and from Bodrum, Bay of Fethiye, Kaş, and Adrasan along Turkey´s Mediterranean coast. Sampling was carried out by means of scuba diving. In some locations a bottom dredge sampler was used. In all, 321 individuals were collected, representing 30 species from 7 orders. Zooplankton Composition And Abundance In Lake Eğrigöl, A High Mountain Lake (Gündoğmuş, Antalya), Cem Aygen, Di̇dem Özdemi̇r Mi̇s, M. Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Süleyman Balik

Field studies were conducted in July and August 2000, and in June and September 2001 in order to determine the zooplankton composition and abundance of Lake Eğrigöl, a high mountain lake located 2060 m a.s.l. in the middle Taurus Mountain Range. In total, 41 species were found, including 30 Rotifera, 8 Cladocera, and 3 Copepoda. Based on the number of species and their abundance (individuals m^{-3}), rotifers were the dominant group (49.75%-90.92%), followed by Cladocera (6.54%-27.52%), and Copepoda (2.54%-22.72%). All taxa were first records for the lake.

Some ecological requirements of aquatic Coleoptera species were studied in a natural lake. Water beetle samples, collected in 2007 from the National Park Sahara-Karagöl belonging to the families Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, and Dytiscidae were identified and listed. Both physical (conductivity and temperature) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, hardness, organic matter, chloride, phosphate, and some metal ions) parameters of the inhabited water were measured.

Multivariate Morphometric Study On Apis Florea Distributed In Iran, Ayça Özkan, Mohammed M. Gharleko, Berna Özden, İrfan Kandemi̇r

Multivariate Morphometric and Spatial Autocorrelation Analyses were performed to determine the morphometric variation in Apis florea colonies representing 13 localities from 4 states on the coastal north-south diagonal in Iran. New morphometric characters (hind wing length, hind wing width, and hind wing angles) were also measured to determine the usefulness of these characters for Apis florea. Analysis of variance of new morphometric characters showed that 7 out of the 8 hind wing variables displayed statistically significant differences among populations (P < 0.05). The scatter plot from Canonical Variate Analysis revealed that the colonies from north (Ilam, Khuzestan, and Bushehr states) showed an overlapping distribution. The colonies from south (Hormuzgan state) formed a non-overlapping distant cluster. Based on the spatial autocorrelation analysis, 14 correlograms were significant for morphometric characters (According to the Bonferroni criterion). Six characters (CuB, C.Ind, HWW, B4, D7, and I13) showed clinal type correlogram.

The parasitoids of the small poplar longhorn beetle, Saperda populnea (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were studied in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces), Turkey, during 2006-2007. Five parasitoid species, Paraperithous gnathaulax (Thomson), Dolichomitus populneus (Ratzeburg), Dolichomitus tuberculatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Ipbiaulax impostor (Scopoli) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and Billaea irrorata (Meig.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), were reared from the over-wintering larvae living in the galls of S. populnea. Dolichomitus populneus was the most numerous of the parasitoids and accounted for 55% of all parasitoids reared. Species composition, nocturnal activity and population dynamics of mosquitoes in the Aras Valley of Turkey are studied. Seven New Jersey light traps were activated two nights per month at different sampling sites showing various habitats such as riverside, orchard, roadside, village, wooded area, agricultural area and pasture in 30 km^^{2} area. The night was divided into 6 equal nocturnal periods (18^{00}-20^{00} h, 20^{00}-22^{00} h, 22^{00}-24^{00} h, 24^{00}-02^{00} h, 02^{00}-04^{00} h, 04^{00}-06^{00} h), and the specimens were collected in consecutive 2 hours. The ichthyofaunal changes in Lake Eğirdir between 1915 and 2007 were reviewed. It was understood that the most drastic change in the ichthyofauna of Lake Eğirdir occurred in 1955 with the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), and that the process of change continued with the addition of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in 1996 and big scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) in 2003. Today, there are 15 fish taxa (10 native, 5 non-native) in Lake Eğirdir. (Hym.: Eulophidae), was reared from galls of Dasineura oleae (Loew) (Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae) on leaves and shoots of Olea europea L. as a larval parasitoid of the host in Hatay, a province of Turkey. Four Euphorinae and Opiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoid species, Biosteres (Chilotrichia) arenarius Stelfox, 1959, Opius (Misophthora) bulgaricus Fischer, 1959, O. (Phaedrotoma) umlalaziensis (Fischer, 1996), and Perilitus (Microctonus) cerealium Haliday, 1835 were recorded for the first time in Turkey. All species were collected from the Adıyaman province in 2004 and 2005. The general distribution and known hosts of each species are presented in this paper.

Experiments were conducted to compare the efficacy of montmorillonite (M) and montmorillonite nanocomposite (MN) to reduce the toxicity of aflatoxin (AF) in broiler chicks from 0 to 42 days of age. A total of 240 chicks were assigned to 6 dietary treatment groups (0 g of adsorbents and 0 mg of AF/kg feed, 3 g of M/kg feed, 3 g of MN/kg feed, 0.11 mg of AF/kg feed, 0.11 mg of AF plus 3 g of M/kg feed, and 0.11 mg of AF plus 3 g of MN/kg feed). Two stocking densities (20 and 40 fry/80-l tank) with 4 feeding rates (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% body weight/day) were used to determine the optimum feeding level for himri barbel fry during a 60-day culture period. Water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and total ammonia nitrogen) were monitored during the experiment. Final body weight and specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly lower with the 2.5% feeding rate than with the others, at both stocking densities; however, no significant differences were observed between the other feeding rates and between stocking densities. White muscle disease (WMD) is a world-wide nutritional disease of all animal species characterised by degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscles. In the present study we determined the cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in hearts of the lambs with WMD (n = 15). Eight clinically healthy lambs served as control. Creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were analysed for both groups. cTnI levels were measured by a commercially available ELISA kit. Measurements of biomarker responses in fish from contaminated sites could provide valuable data for environmental risk assessment. Biomarkers are sensitive to both environmental pollution and confounding factors that are not related to pollution (e.g., season, nutritional status, and population density). Unfortunately, data about the latter group are scarce. Effects of melatonin on the levels of antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GRd), and malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation marker, in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. The results showed that melatonin statistically activated the CAT, POD, and GRd activity (P < 0.05). Moreover, MDA levels were significantly decreased as a result of melatonin treatment (P < 0.01).

Genetically fat and lean chickens reared identically in the same environment were used to investigate the effect of the apoVLDL-II gene (intron I) on total cholesterol, triglyceride, and lipoprotein concentrations. The overall allele frequency in the 2 populations was 0.59 for allele A and 0.41 for allele B. The allele frequency in the Rugao breed was 0.52 for allele A and 0.48 for allele B; however, in the Anka breed it was 0.65 for allele A and 0.35 for allele B. The apoVLDL-II genotype in the genetically fat Anka breed was associated with a significant increase in serum triacylglyceride concentration …

The efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PhOH) as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1799), was examined. Different doses (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 mL L^{-1}) of 2-PhOH were prepared in 20 L transparent plastic containers containing 10 L of continually aerated seawater (pH 8.2, O2 8 mg L^{-1}, salinity 37.2 per thousand at 15.3 °C). The objective of this work was to study the protein patterns, plasmid profiles, and antibiotic susceptibility of Staphylococcus intermedius and Staphylococcus aureus isolates originating from mastitic mammary glands of dairy cattle in different parts of Konya province. A total of 114 Staphylococcus species were isolated and identified by conventional bacteriological methods from bovine mastitis. Of the total isolates 77 were identified as S. aureus and 37 as S. intermedius. Intra- and inter-species diversities in the coagulase-positive staphylococci were investigated by analysis of whole-cell protein profiles using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).
