The aim of this study was to compare 2 copper products and examine their influence on hematological parameters, body weight, and content of copper and iron in the liver and spleen of pigs. In this experiment, 60 day-old pigs, bw \approx 10 kg, (Camborough hybrid) were fed 1 of 3 treatments for 20 days: 20 ppm copper from copper methionine (Cu MET), 40 ppm copper from Cu MET, and 20 ppm Cu from copper sulfate (Cu SUL). The present study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of post parturient haemoglobinuria in buffaloes, and to compare the therapeutic efficacy of toldimfos sodium, sodium acid phosphate, and tea leaves. The prevalence of disease in 1000 animals, grouped according to varying stages of lactation and pregnancy, was recorded. Screening of positive animals based on clinical signs of haemoglobinuria, anaemia, and moderate pyrexia was performed. Urine and blood samples were collected. In this study, the effects of \beta-glucan administration at different dosages on non-specific immune response and haematological parameters in healthy Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) were investigated. Fish were fed with diets containing 0.5% and 0.1% glucan (experiment) and without glucan (control) for 2 weeks. The objective of this study was to determine the interactions between alfalfa hay and corn grain particle sizes on nutrient intake, milk yield, milk composition, chewing activity, and ruminal pH of dairy cows. Alfalfa hay was chopped either at 4 cm (long; L) or 1 cm (short; S) theoretical length of cut. Particle size of corn grain was obtained by grinding either at 1 mm (coarse; C) or less than 1 mm (fine; F) mean particle size. Johne's disease-paratuberculosis-affects domesticated and wild ruminants throughout the world. The first symptoms of the disease appear 6 months to 15 years after infection. The clinical stage of paratuberculosis usually occurs in older animals and is rare in those under 2 years of age. While performing analyses on a farm in the northeastern region of Poland a 2-year-old heifer that manifested symptoms of dyspepsia, proceeding with watery diarrhea, was observed. ELISA test (IDEXX) results demonstrated a positive serological reaction for paratuberculosis. Clinical examination, microbiological analysis of feces, autopsy, and histopathological examination confirmed the incidence of Johne's disease in the heifer.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of feeding frequency on body weight, carcass characteristics, and hormonal profile in Iranian Holstein calves. The study included 12 Holstein bull calves that were assigned to 2 groups according to initial live body weight. The animals were fed a TMR ration based on live body weight. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of parenteral administration of L-carnitine on some biochemical parameters in Halep (Damascus) goats during the last month of pregnancy. L-carnitine was administrated to goats in group I (n = 13) by subcutaneous injections once a week during the last month of the pregnancy. Physiologic salt solution was administered to goats in group II (n = 12) by the same route during the same period. Differences of glucose concentration between groups were not significant (P > 0.05). The plasma concentration of long-acting oxytetracycline (OTC-LA) was measured following a single intramuscular (IM) injection (50 mg/kg) in grouper (Epinephelus marginatus), a common inhabitant of marine aquaria and a potential candidate for fish farming. The experiment was carried out at 20 °C and sampling points were selected at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h post-administration. The present study aimed to determine P-glycoprotein expression according to TVT cell morphology in 42 dogs with confirmed TVT, classified into lymphocytoid, plasmocytoid, and mixed. The chemotherapy efficiency was investigated along with its relation to P-glycoprotein expression in tumoral cells, evaluated by immunocytochemistry, considering positive tumors more than 10% stained. Among the samples collected, 50.00% possessed plasmocytoid morphology, 18.63% lymphocytoid, and 31.37% mixed. The plasmocytoid presented greater immunoreactivity to the anti-P-glycoprotein antibody in relation to the lymphocytoid. It was observed that the plasmocytoid was less sensitive to chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to determine the dominant aerobic bacterial community of sea bass larvae during their weaning period in 2 different marine hatcheries in Muğla-Bodrum region. Samplings were made in January, March, and May 2005. Nucellar epidermal cells in the micropylar region of Scilla autumnalis L. differentiate into a nucellar cap. It secretes a PAS-positive exudate filling the micropyle. A group of cells at the chalazal end of the nucellus forms a hypostase. Close to the antipodals, the hypostase cells contain abundant starch grains, suggesting a function as a storage tissue. Another ovular structure is the obturator. It secretes an exudate that stains deeply with PAS reaction, and it takes a role in directing the growth of pollen tubes toward the micropyle. Hypocotyl explants of 3 flax cultivars were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in 3 different ways. Two pretreatment applications were compared with the routinely applied conventional regeneration protocol of culturing explants directly on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg L^{-1} 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.02 mg L^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The species composition and diversity of the epipelic algae of Balık Lake were investigated between May and October 2008. A total of 39 taxa were determined, and Cyclotella meneghiniana, Craticula cuspidata, Closterium strigosum, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, and Amphora ovalis were the most conspicuous algae, regarding frequency of occurrence and relative abundance in the epipelic algal flora. While the highest total cell number of the epipelic community was 26,214 cells/cm^2 in October, the lowest was 23,644 cells/cm^2 in July. The highest species diversity index (H^{'}) value was 2.26, in June.

A total of 48 epiphytic lichen species were found on the various tree species (Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach subsp. bornmuelleriana (Mattf.) Coode & Cullen, Fagus orientalis Lipsky, and Pinus nigra Arnold. subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe) that formed communities on the north-west, extending from 1300 to 1600 m altitudes, of Mt. Uludağ in Bursa. Twenty-five epiphytic lichen species that occur on more than 4 sample trees were statistically analysed. The most frequent species were Pseudevernia furfuracea L. To help in the clarification of the taxonomic status of Elymus L. and related genera Agropyron Gaertn., Leymus Hochst., Hordelymus (Jess.) Harz, and Brachypodium P.Beauv., the sequence diversity in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA was studied. ITS data of 64 Triticeae accessions including 40 Elymus, 12 Agropyron, 7 Leymus, and 4 Hordelymus, and 1 Brachypodium as an out-group were analysed. The molecular diversity statistics indicated that the most diverse genus is Elymus among the studied genera. Karyology Of Ten Turkish Trigonella L. (Leguminosae) Species From Section Cylindricae Boiss., Esra Marti̇n, Hasan Akan, Murat Eki̇ci̇, Zeki̇ Aytaç

This study describes the karyotypes of 10 Turkish species of Trigonella L. belonging to section Cylindricae Boiss. (Leguminosae). Excluding the karyotypes of T. velutina Boiss. and of T. sibthorpii Boiss., which were previously studied, all of the other 8 species were studied here for the first time. The species of the section were gathered from different localities in Turkey, and it was determined that the somatic chromosome numbers for all species were the same (2n = 16). Also, satellite metaphase chromosomes were determined in T. velutina and T. strangulata.

Pollen morphology of the 13 taxa of Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae) from Turkey was investigated by using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result of LM and SEM observations, it was found that the pollen types are generally isopolar, radially symmetric, triangular in polar view, and lophate, with lophae ornamentations that are echinate-perforate and an exine thickness ranging from 6.99 to 11.82 µm. Four New Records For The Benthic Diatoms (Genera Cocconeis, Seminavis, Synedra, And Trachysphenia) From The Aegean Sea, Fatma Sabanci, Tufan Koray

Cocconeis pseudomarginata W.Greg., Seminavis robusta Danielidis & D.G.Mann, Synedra gaillonii (Bory) Ehrenb. var. macilenta (Grunow) H.Perag., and Trachysphenia australis Petit var. rostellata Hust. from Bacillariophyceae were reported for the first time from Turkish coastal waters. Additionally, Synedra gaillonii var. macilenta and Trachysphenia australis var. rostellata were the first records at variety level for Mediterranean coasts. Morphological characteristics of these species were given in detail, and information on their distribution was provided.

Genetic Identification Of Clones And The Genetic Structure Of Seed Crops In A Pinus Brutia Seed Orchard, Nuray Kaya, Kani̇ Işik

Megagametophyte tissue in seeds from a Pinus bruia Ten. seed orchard was analyzed for 9 enzyme systems (aconitase, alcohol dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate-transaminase, malate dehydrogenase, menadione reductase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, and shikimate dehydrogenase) encoded by 14 loci using starch gel electrophoresis. Twenty-eight clones and 3 ramets per clone were sampled from the orchard for analysis. Isozyme patterns of the clones clearly indicate that each clone had a different genotype when overall loci were taken into consideration. Sixty Bacillus spp. isolates were obtained from different agricultural fields in Kayseri province using selective media. Total DNA was isolated and analyzed by PCR using cry1 general primers. Of the 60 tested isolates, 17 carried the cry1 gene. B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki and all other isolates exhibited approximately 19-kb plasmid bands. In addition to the 270-bp band, the standard strain and isolate I47 yielded 180-bp PCR products. The isolates and standard strain were toxic to Ephestia kuehniella Zeller and Plodia interpunctella Hubner larvae. This paper presents the results of 2 experiments: an incubation experiment and a subsequent field experiment. An incubation experiment was set up in order to determine the mineralization potential of different organic materials (OMs) (well-rotted farmyard manure [FTM], guano [G], soybean seed [S], and forage pea seed [P]), the kinetics of mineral nitrogen (N) release, and the correlation between OM content and the quantity of mineralized N. Soil compaction caused by heavy wheeling reduces water infiltration, root development, and yield, and increases bulk density and soil strength. The objective of this study was to determine changes in spatial variability patterns of soil penetration resistance before and after using the silage machine in a corn-growing field. Soil penetration resistance was measured in a 100 × 400 m field with 10 m intervals just before and after harvesting. The effects of alternative spray programs, NaHCO_3/K_2SiO_3 + sulphur, KH_2PO_4/di - 1 - p - menthone, and a conventional spray program, penconazole/sulphur, as well as various levels of shoot toppings (to the 1st, 3rd, and 5th buds) on powdery mildew disease [Uncinula necator (Schw.) Burr.] and grape quality were investigated in this study. The study was carried out on grape variety Karasakız (Vitis vinifera L.) during 2003 and 2004 growing seasons.
