Comparative Essential Oil Analysis Of Geranium Sylvaticum Extracted By Hydrodistillation And Microwave Distillation, Nuran Kahri̇man, Gonca Tosun, Hasan Genç, Nuretti̇n Yayli

The essential oil of Geranium sylvaticum L. (Geraniaceae) was isolated by hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave distillation (MD). The composition of the volatile oils was characterized by GC-FID and GC-MS. A total of 73 and 70 compounds were identified, constituting over 90.3% and 98.7% of oil composition of G. sylvaticum, respectively. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were shown to be the main group of constituents (HD: 31.7% and MD: 39.8%). The major component of the oils of G. sylvaticum was \gamma -muurolene (HD: 10.9% and MD: 19.6%). Quantum Chemical Studies On Tautomerism And Basicity Behavior Of Some 1,2,4-Triazole Derivatives, Cemi̇l Öğreti̇r, Yadi̇gar Gülseven Sidir, İsa Sidir, Erol Taşal

The acidity constants, relative stabilities, and tautomeric equilibrium constants of some 1,2,4-triazole derivatives were determined using the density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP method and 6-311G(d,p) basis set. The integral equation formalism version of the polarizable continuum model (IEFPCM) was used in the calculations of the aqueous phase. The calculated tautomeric equilibrium and relative stabilities values revealed that the 4H-1,2,4 triazole form for all studied molecules was favored over the 1H-1,2,4 triazole form. Protonation processes indicated the predominance of the 1H-1,2,4 triazole form over the 2H-1,2,4 triazole form. Seedlings of mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) cv. T-44 grown on a sand culture were exposed to cadmium (Cd) (100 µM) on day 10 of growth. These seedlings were subsequently sprayed with deionized water (control) or 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA) (10^{-6} M) on day 15 and were sampled 30 days after sowing to assess growth and metabolite content. The effects of the herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid and isoproturon on 3 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties (HUW 234, HUW 468, and HUW 533) were studied with regards to mitotic abnormalities and chromosomal behavior. Pre-soaked seeds were treated with both herbicides at concentrations of 50-1200 ppm. Both 2,4-D and isoproturon were highly mito-inhibitory and induced chromosomal abnormalities, such as precocious movement, stickiness, and chromosome bridges, with and without laggards and fragments at the anaphase and telophase. In order to contribute to the understanding of its response to metal stress, Ulva lactuca (L.) was treated with different concentration of chromium (VI) (0.2, 0.5, 1, and 5 mM K2CrO4), and alterations in Fv/Fm ratio (maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII) and cell viability were investigated. Significant alterations of the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) ratio were observed in response to the increase in chromium concentration. The Fv/Fm ratio decreased in Ulva lactuca following 2 h treatment with 1 and 5 mM Cr(VI) solution. The cell viability was decreased in cells exposed to higher Cr(VI) concentrations. Hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Ranunculus marginatus d'Urv. var. trachycarpus (Fisch. & Mey.) Azn. and R. sprunerianus Boiss. were tested in vitro for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by DPPH radical scavenging and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assays. Methanol extracts showed the highest antioxidant activity in both assays. The total phenolics in the extracts were determined colorimetrically by using the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The total flavonoid content of the extracts was evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. The results obtained in the antioxidant activity tests were in positive correlation with the total …

In this study, 24 carps (Cyprinus carpio Lin.,1758) caught from Çavuşçu Lake (Konya; 36°41´N, 34°26´E) were examined for metazoan parasites. Infestation rate of Argulus foliaceus Lin.,1758 was found to be 45.8%. In addition, Argulus foliaceus was photographed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a light microscope.

Aphrodisiac Activity And Curative Effects Of Pedalium Murex (L) Against Ethanol Induced Infertility In Male Rats, Gunasekaran Balamurugan, P. Muralidharan, Satyanarayana Polapala

It has been suggested that chronic ethanol exposure may result in testicular damage and infertility in males. Petroleum ether extract of Pedalium murex, family Pedaliaceae (PEPM), is evaluated in this study for its ability to increase aphrodisiac activity and to cure ethanol induced germ cell damage and infertility in male rat models. Doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg of PEPM showed a significant increase (P < 0.01, P < 0.001) in mating and mounting behaviour. The effect on fertility factors such as total body weight, percentage of pregnancy, litter size were also significantly increased (P < 0.01) in comparison with the ethanol-treated group. Significant increases in sperm motility and count were observed in PEPM-treated groups in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.01; P < 0.001) as compared with the ethanol-treated group. Similarly, reductions in the percentage of abnormal sperm were noted in animals treated with PEPM 400 mg/kg. The effects of PEPM on total protein, total cholesterol and testosterone were satisfactory, the levels being increased significantly for protein (P < 0.05), cholesterol (P < 0.01) and testosterone (P < 0.05) by 400 mg/kg PEPM. Microtome sections of the testes of animals treated with 400 mg/kg PEPM exhibited restoration and recovery of germinal cells and the luminal spermatozoa and were comparable with the control group animals. These effects of PEPM make this natural herb ideal as an aphrodisiac and a potent fertility enhancing drug.

This study was carried out to determine the diurnal distributions of phytoplankton density, bio-volume, and chlorophyll a in relation to nutrients and CTD measurements in surface waters of the coastal area in the Dardanelles during high density of phytoplankton, especially high diatom production (between 3 July and 4 August 2002). The present study examined the effect of ACT-2, a K-vitamin group activator intensively applied to tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), on the anatomy, morphology, and viability of tomato pollen from plants grown under greenhouse conditions. The activator was applied to tomatoes at the recommended dosage (150 cc/100 L of tap water) and double the recommended dosage (300 cc/100 L of tap water). Verbena officinalis L. (vervain) is a medicinal plant that shows several biological activities, including antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, analgesic, neuroprotective, hypnotic/sedative, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, cicatrizant, and antioxidant. This report describes an efficient plant regeneration system for V. officinalis via adventitious shoot development from stem internode and petiole explants. Stem internode explants were more effective than petiole explants in terms of both the number of shoots per explant and the percentages of explants forming shoots. The effects of mineral salts on fiber cell thickness in flax (Linum usitatissimum L. cultivar Sarı 85) were investigated in plants grown in medium both rich and poor in mineral salts and vitamins. Three media were investigated: control (MS medium), mineral salt and vitamin deficient MS medium, and mineral salt and vitamin rich MS medium. While chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid pigment content significantly increased in the medium rich in mineral salts and vitamins, they decreased in the medium poor in mineral salts and vitamins. To investigate the maternal donors and phylogenetic relationships of polyploids in Pseudoroegneria and related genera, the chloroplast trnL-F sequences of 31 Triticeae accessions were analyzed. The substitution saturation analysis of trnL-F sequences in this study suggested that they are suitable for phylogenetic analysis. In the trnL-F sequences tree, 4 major clades were formed: (a) the St/E clade comprised all of the Pseudoroegneria species together with species in Roegneria, Elytrigia, Douglasdeweya and Lophopyrum; (b) A. cristatum, A. mongolicum, and A. pectinatum subsp. retrofractum formed the P/W clade; (c) the Ns clade included species in Psathyrostachys; and (d) the H clade consisted …

Fifty-three Nocardia strains were the subject of a restriction polymorphic ribosomal RNA analysis (ribotyping) designed to distinguish between representatives of clinically significant species and related strains. The organisms were assigned to 19 groups using a combination of EcoRV gene restriction endonuclease patterns and a digoxigenin-labelled Streptomyces violaceoruber TK21 rDNA probe. Each ribotype group contained 4 to 13 restriction fragments that ranged in size from 20.7 to 0.9 kb. The N. brasiliensis, N. crassostreae, N. farcinica, N. otitidiscaviarum, and N. seriolea strains showed distinct ribotype patterns. The effects of supplemental UV-B (sUV-B) irradiance, and Cd and Ni treatment alone and in combination were evaluated on heavy metal accumulation, and growth, biomass, and yield responses in 2 cucumber cultivars (Cucumis sativus L. cultivars Local Super Green and Tripti-19). Responses to the combined application of Cd and Ni in both cultivars were antagonistic. Cultivar Tripti-19 showed more sensitivity in terms of yield response towards sUV-B and heavy metals than did Local Super Green. sUV-B exposure increased the concentration of Cd/Ni in the roots, shoots, and fruits of cucumber plants, as compared to the unexposed plants. The effects of cadmium (Cd) on antioxidant responses and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) were studied in Vicia faba L. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR), and the levels of ascorbate (ASC), glutathione (GSH), hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde (MDA, indicator of lipid peroxidation) were measured. Genotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the changes in the mitotic index (MI) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE). The present study investigated the effect of methyleugenol, a food flavoring and fragrance agent, on the livers of laboratory rats. Doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg/day of methyleugenol (in 0.5% methylcellulose) were administered intragastrically (IG) to 2 dose groups for 10 days alongside a control group (n = 10 for each group). Gains in body weight were not statistically significant for either dose. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities decreased (P < 0.05) for both dose groups, but AST (aspartate aminotransferase) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) only in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not change significantly in either group. The total amount of glucose remained unchanged, but glycogen in the liver decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. There was also an increase of swelling in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum sacs (sER), electron dense accumulations in the sER, cytoplasmic vacuolization, a slight increase of mitochondria and lysosomes, and invaginations in the nucleus membranes of hepatocytes. Extensions in bile canaliculi and increasing microvilli of bile canaliculi in the liver were also observed. These findings indicate the ultrastructural toxic effect of methyleugenol on rat livers in 10 and 30 mg/kg/day doses. Therefore, we may speculate that the toxic effect of methyleugenol needs to be examined in detail.

A total of 120 fresh water fish samples were evaluated for the presence of Aeromonas spp. A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veronii bv. sobria were isolated from the gills, intestines, livers, and skins of fish, and 78 isolated Aeromonas spp. strains were further examined for siderophore, hemolytic, protease, and pyrazinamidase activities and antibiotic resistance. Siderophore production was demonstrated in almost all of the A. hydrophila and A. caviae strains except for 2 strains of A. veronii bv. sobria. Vibration Spectra Of Polar Mixing Optical Phonon States And Fröhlich Electron-Phonon Coupling Behaviors In A Wurtzite Zno Quantum Dot, Li Zhang

Based on the dielectric continuum model and Loudon's uniaxial crystal model, the interface-optical-propagating (IO-PR) mixing phonon states of a quasi-zero-dimensional (Q0D) wurtzite cylindrical quantum dot (QD) are investigated. It is found that there are two types of IO-PR mixing phonon modes, i.e. \rho-IO/z-PR mixing modes and the z-IO/\rho-PR mixing modes coexisting in Q0D wurtzite QDs. Numerical calculation on a wurtzite ZnO QD shows that the dispersion frequencies of the mixing modes are discrete functions of the azimuthal quantum number and axial wave-number.
