Mycorrhizas play key roles in important ecosystem processes and functions. To enhance our understanding of the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on important foliar traits of host plants and their response to climate changes, we analysed 6 selected foliar traits among 54 plant species in 129 sampling sites of ascertained mycorrhizal types on the Tibetan Plateau based on their functional groups. The selected traits were leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen concentration (on mass and area bases, N_{mass} and N_{area}, respectively), photosynthetic capacity (A_{mass} and A_{area}) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). Newcastle disease is considered the most contagious poultry disease and may cause severe economic loss in the poultry industry. The present study was undertaken to focus on molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) gene in the Iranian isolates. The nucleotide sequence of the HN (780-903 nt) coding region of 6 Newcastle disease viruses (NDVs), isolated from various outbreaks in Iran, was determined and aligned with previously published sequences of 26 NDV isolates in GenBank; the resulting alignment was then analyzed in terms of genetic variation. Genetic Diversity And Identification Of Some Turkish Cotton Genotypes (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) By Rapd-Pcr Analysis, Yonca Surgun, Beki̇r Çöl, Betül Bürün

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the leading fiber crop and the second most important oil seed crop in the world. This study aimed to analyze the genetic differences among 9 cotton genotypes of cultivars from Turkey using the random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) method. A total of 42 RAPD primers were used to determine polymorphism among the genotypes and 34 of the primers produced scorable results, with 319 RAPD-PCR bands obtained. The rate of polymorphism was calculated to be 18.1%, and genetic similarity between any 2 genotypes ranged from 90.2% to 96.5%. By evaluating the presence and absence …

The present study investigates changes in the inorganic ions, proline, and endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) contents of the apoplastic and symplastic compartments of leaves from drought-tolerant (Yakutiye) and drought-sensitive (Zulbiye) cultivars of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Drought stress caused a decrease in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance in both cultivars. Concentrations of proline in the drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive cultivars increased in response to drought stress in both compartments. The symplastic K^+ concentration decreased in both cultivars. However, the opposite trend was observed concerning K^+ concentrations in the apoplastic areas. The incorporation of dry neem leaves into the soil significantly enhanced the yield of uninoculated eggplant, but aldicarb treatments at 4 kg a.i./ha proved to be phytotoxic. Inoculation with root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita (1500 J_2/plant) caused a significant decrease in both the plant growth (12.5%) and the yield (11.9%) of eggplant cv. Pusa Purple Round. Treatments involving neem leaves, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Paecilomyces lilacinus, Trichoderma harzianum, or aldicarb reduced the suppressive effect of the nematode, leading to a significant increase in the dry matter production and yield of inoculated plants compared to the inoculated control. This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic value of CA 15-3, mammaglobin, c-erbB-2, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), CK 20, and CA 125 for detecting metastatic breast and ovarian carcinoma in pleural fluids. The material under study consisted of 26 pleural effusions from invasive breast and ovarian cancer patients from the Hannover Cytopathology Institute. Expressions of these markers were studied using immunocytochemistry. All of the breast cancer cases studied showed a positive reaction with CA 15-3, while only 36% with mammaglobin, 21% with c-erbB-2, 36% with ER, and 7% with PR were positive. A cheese isolate Pediococcus pentosaceus lactic acid bacterium, which has been deposited at the Microbial Type Culture Collection Centre Chandigarh with the accession number MTCC 5151, was tested for anti-Shigella dysenteriae activity and the bacteriocin was characterized. The protein band was observed with tricine sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) as a single band with a molecular mass of 23 kDa. This is a new and novel bacteriocin that inhibits S. dysenteriae and has not yet been reported from P. pentosaceus. To compare the antioxidant and antiradical activity of phenolic extracts of different species of wild almond kernels (including the brown skin), 10 wild almond species were selected from Shahindezh and Qasemloo Valley in West Azarbaijan Province, Iran. The fruits of these almonds were collected, their kernels were separated from their hulls and shells and then ground, and methanolic extracts were prepared from the kernels. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and a colorimetric method, respectively. The aim of the study was to compare the classical morphological characters of coccoid green algae under field and culture conditions by using modern molecular analysis. The present experiment was undertaken to determine the mutagenic potential of lead on the cytomorphology of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and to determine the maximum concentration of lead nitrate that induces maximum genetic variability. The seeds were treated with 6 different concentrations (10, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 ppm) of lead nitrate. The higher concentrations of lead nitrate significantly reduced plant height, number of branches per plant, pollen fertility, and yield; higher concentrations also caused variation in the plants at the seedling and mature stages. Mucuna pruriens belongs to the family Papillonaceae. The seeds and leaves of these plants contain a large amount of L-DOPA. L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) is one of the most widely used drugs in the treatment of Parkinson disease. Development of an efficient gene transfer method is an absolute requirement for genetically improving Mucuna pruriens and creating plants with more desirable traits. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to determine genetic relationships among Velezia L. species from Turkey. A total of 432 amplified bands were obtained using 14 RAPD primers. The polymorphism in RAPD markers was high (98.61%) and was sufficient to distinguish each species. The degree of band-sharing was used for evaluating the genetic similarity between species and for constructing a dendrogram by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). İzmir Çamaltı Saltern is the biggest seawater-based saltern in Turkey. To date, it has not been investigated extensively for the existence of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB)-producing species. In this study, 14 extremely halophilic archaea were isolated, purified, and screened for PHB production. One strain was then selected as the best PHB producer, further cultivated in different PHB media, and compared with a positive control, Haloferax mediterranei ATCC 33500. PHB was extracted from cells and measured with a spectrophotometer, and then the amount of PHB was measured through comparison with standard PHB. Cooling towers are heat rejection systems that are used in some industrial applications, and they have the potential to develop infectious concentrations of Legionella pneumophila. SANIPACKING® cooling tower fill material and standard polypropylene fill material were compared in terms of biofilm formation potential and anti-Legionella activity within a 4-month period using a laboratory-scale recirculating water system. To investigate the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Salvia miltiorrhiza and related species, we analyzed the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for 7 accessions of Salvia miltiorrhiza and another 23 samples from other taxa within the genus Salvia by maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses. There were 257 variation sites amounting to 40.8% of the total base pairs. All of the data revealed abundant genetic diversity in the genus Salvia. The aim of this study was to compare the salinity tolerances of 2 oriental tobacco varieties (İzmir Özbaş and Akhisar 97). Salinity stress experiments were performed under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. Seedlings of each variety were subjected to 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 mM NaCl. Photosynthetic pigment levels, lipid peroxidation rate, total protein content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and proline concentrations were determined for seedlings treated with salt for 14 days. This study explored the level of infection caused by different inoculum concentrations (10^2, 10^3, and 10^4 zoospores mL^-^1) of Phytophthora capsici in 3 pepper cultivars at days 2, 4, and 6. The effect that the infection induced on the peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), and phenolics of resistant and sensitive seedlings, as well as the defense mechanism against the pathogen, were also investigated. Turkish Journal of Biology

Antioxidant activity of the methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of Marchantia polymorpha L., which grows naturally in Turkey, was tested by DPPH and ABTS methods. According to the applied methods, both extracts exhibited moderate activity. Some phenolic compounds that could be responsible for the activity were investigated by RP-HPLC, qualitatively and quantitatively, in the methanolic extract of liverwort. While caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol were not found in the extract, luteolin as the liable antioxidant agent was determined as 0.0052 ± 0.0002% among the investigated compounds.

The focus of this study was Cyclamen alpinum (formerly C. trochopteranthum). Habitat fragmentation, environmental degradation, and overharvesting of tubers have exerted pressure on native populations of this valuable ornamental species. An obligate alkaliphilic Bacillus strain was isolated from a soil sample and identified as Bacillus cohnii APT5 based upon phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses. The optimum growth pH of B. cohnii APT5 was 10.0. B. cohnii APT5 was also found capable of producing an extracellular alkaline protease that showed optimum activity (693,318 U/min) at 50 °C and pH 11.0 when grown in a medium containing casein. The enzyme was partially purified 3.22-fold with a yield of 78.74% after acetone precipitation and cation exchange column chromatography, respectively. Gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), is one of the most serious pests affecting fruit, forest, industrial, and foliage plants worldwide. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize pathogenic bacteria from this pest and determine their pathogenicity. L. dispar larvae were collected from various populations in the forest areas of the Black Sea region of Turkey in May and June of 2008 and 2009, and 9 culturable bacterial isolates were obtained from these larvae. Copper-tolerant bacteria were isolated from soil samples taken from a region where metal industries are located. After selecting 2 isolates with relatively higher bioremoval efficiency, the effects of increasing copper concentration, pH, and temperature on the bioremoval efficiency of the growing isolates were determined. Strain N1c and strain N5a showed maximal bioremoval efficiency of 82% and 75%, respectively, in 20 mg/L copper-containing medium at pH 6.8 and 30 °C.
