Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study, deep learning (DL)-based models were developed for the classification of 5 fungal species from the Phallaceae family (Clathrus ruber, Colus hirudinosus, Mutinus caninus, Phallus impudicus, and Pseudocolus fusiformis). ConvNeXT achieved the highest performance with 98% accuracy, 98% precision, 98% recall, and 98% F1-score. EfficientNetB4 and Xception also performed well with 96% accuracy. In contrast, lighter models such as MobileNetV2 and MixNet S showed significantly lower accuracy (84% and 80%, respectively). Among the explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques, gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) and Integrated Gradients showed that high-accuracy models focus more effectively on biologically meaningful regions. Nonoscillatory Solutions Of Third-Order Nonlinear Dynamic Equations: Existence And Nonexistence, Özkan Öztürk, Elvan Akin, Nesli̇han Nesli̇ye Pelen
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper investigates a third-order nonlinear dynamic equation on arbitrary time scales, a nonempty closed subset of the real numbers, unifying continuous and discrete analyses. We study the qualitative behavior of nonoscillatory solutions and their quasi-derivatives, focusing on their limiting behaviors. The existence of such solutions are established using improper integral criteria and Schauder’s and Knaster’s fixed point theorems. In addition, we establish the criteria for the nonexistence of nonoscillatory solutions. Furthermore, we prove the existence of Kneser-type solutions of the corresponding linear dynamic equation on isolated time scales, addressing an open problem in the literature. Several examples of theoretical …

Innovative Approaches To Estimating Sessile Oak Stem Volume: Comparing Additive Models And Ensemble Machine Learning, Maria J. Diamantopoulou, Abbas Şahi̇n, Ramazan Özçeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Sessile oak is an important deciduous forest tree species across Türkiye and Europe. Estimating individual tree and stand volumes is essential for growth and yield models, as these predictions play a critical role in assessing forest management, economics, and fire risk. In pursuit of this goal, nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR) was used for the simultaneous fitting of stem volume components, and compared to three ensemble machine learning techniques: gradient boosting regression (GBr), XGBoost regression (XGBr), and random forest regression (RFr). NSUR accounts for correlations between error terms across different equations, leading to more efficient parameter estimates than if each …

Background/aim: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. CF is characterized by respiratory tract infections, pancreatic insufficiency, meconium ileus, intestinal obstruction, and male infertility. A genotype to phenotype correlation is difficult to establish because of the heterogeneity of disease severity. Even patients with the same CFTR mutation can have varying clinical severities. In recent years, studies have explored the role of microRNA (miRNA) expression in the regulation of respiratory diseases. However, no research has been conducted to date on miRNAs in siblings with the same CFTR mutation. …

Background/aim: Serratia marcescens which is a nosocomial pathogen, is naturally resistant to a wide spectrum of antibiotics, which makes the management of infections difficult. The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro susceptibilities of S. marcescens to ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, meropenem, amikacin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, and to compare the metabolic profiles of meropenemresistant isolates under basal conditions and after exposure to sublethal concentrations of meropenem.
Materials and methods: A total of 84 S. marcescens isolates were included from various samples. Genes for meropenem resistance were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Genetic similarities among isolates of S. marcescens were …

Background/aim: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major clinical issue, frequently resulting from ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Sinapic acid (SA), a natural phenolic molecule included in numerous plant-based foods, exhibits antiapoptotic, antioxidant, and antiinflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the renoprotective effects of SA in an I/R-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) model.
Materials and methods: Sprague–Dawley male rats (n = 32) were randomly assigned to four groups: sham, I/R, SA 20 mg/kg, and SA 40 mg/kg. SA was administered intraperitoneally before reperfusion. Renal tissues were examined using biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical methods, focusing on oxidative stress, cytokine expression, and apoptosis …
