The Study Of Tau And Phospho Tau Protein Levels In Attention Deficit And Hyperactivity, Hati̇ce Saraçoğlu, Eser Kiliç, Esra Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a widespread neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and has negative consequences throughout adult life. The etiology and pathogenesis of ADHD are still unclear. Tau protein is a soluble microtubule-related protein expressed by neurons and localized in the cytoplasm as well as axons. Tau protein provides stability of microtubule in two ways: phosphorylation and isoforms. The excessive phosphorylation of Tau separates the protein from the microtubule, thus making it unstable. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between serum Tau protein and phospho Tau (p-Tau181) levels and …

Assessment Of Erythrocyte Morphology In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilotstudy Of Electron Microscopy-Based Analysis In Relation To Healthy Controls, Tülay Mortaş, Şenay Arikan Durmaz, Şaban Cem Sezen, Yasemi̇n Savranlar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The present study aimed to assess erythrocyte morphology in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients using scanning electron microscopy. Materials and methods: In total, 30 patients admitted to endocrine outpatient clinics were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to their fasting blood glucose levels: type 2 diabetes mellitus (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels ≥ 126 mg/dL) and control (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels < 99 mg/dL). The patient's demographic characteristics, haemoglobin A1c levels, and scanning electron microscopy findings regarding erythrocyte morphology were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the control and type 2 diabetes mellitus group in terms of the participants' age (51.13 ± 8.53 vs. 50.33 ± 8.72 years, p = 0.8) and the male/female ratio (9/6 vs. 9/6). In the control group, discocytes were abundant, echinocytes were rare, and spherocytes were absent. On the other hand, discocytes were less common and echinocyte-shaped erythrocytes were more common in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. In addition, spherocytes were detected in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group. Moreover, the diameter of discocytes was significantly lower (p = 0.014), and blood glucose and haemoglobin A1c levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05 for both) in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that high glucose levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients lead to significant alterations in erythrocyte morphology, including decreased erythrocyte deformability and the formation of echinocytes and spherocytes due to eryptosis. The possibility of decreased erythrocyte deformability due to excessive eryptosis may disturb microcirculation in newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who do not have any complications.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced lung injury is the most widely used experimental ALI model and provides opportunities for new targeting therapy. In this study, we investigated the effects of tocilizumab, adalimumab, and methylprednisolone in LPS-induced acute lung injury. Materials and methods: Lung injury was established by intratracheal instillation of LPS. The rats were randomly divided into six groups: LPS, control, and treatment groups (adalimumab, tocilizumab, methylprednisolone, adalimumab + tocilizumab). Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung tissues were collected at 48 h and 96 h following LPS …

Background/aim: Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is a predictive marker for immunotherapeutic agents. However, heterogeneous staining of PD-L1 can cause false-negative results. The aim of this study is to evaluate the importance of histological patterns on PD-L1 staining heterogeneity in lung adenocarcinomas (LAC). Materials and methods: PD-L1 immunohistochemistry (IHC) stain was performed to two different tissue cores of 128 LAC cases, and cut-off values are given for grouping the cases according to the percentage of staining (1%-10%, 11%-49%, 50%-100%). Staining rates between cores were compared and analyzed by their histological patterns. Also, the relation of the PD-L1 expression with the clinicopathological …
