Background/aim: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Several studies shown that alterations of microbiota, increase the risk of neurodegenerative disorders. We aimed to reveal whether there is a difference in the gut microbiota of patients with ALS.Materials and methods: The participants are divided into three groups. Group 1 formed patients with ALS. Healthy family members living in the same house of the patients formed Group 2. Lastly, sex, age-matched healthy people were included in Group 3. Background/aim: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease is an inherited kidney disease. This study aims to detect rare and common DNA variants of the PKHD1 gene using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and to classify them in terms of being pathogenic according to The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Materials and methods: NGS analysis was performed on the DNA of 304 patients who were referred to Ege University Molecular Medicine Laboratory with suspected polycystic kidney disease. Background/aim: Thrombomodulin (TM) is found on endothelial cell surfaces and increases in response to endothelial injury of different organs. Interleukin (IL)-8 regulates pulmonary inflammation. TM and IL-8 are candidate biological markers of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The study is aimed to determine the relationship between the delivery and breastfeeding history of the patients andthe clinicopathological properties of breast cancer.Materials and methods: A questionnaire was utilized for the study, which included the age of diagnosis, the number of children at thetime of diagnosis, the age of the children, and the breastfeeding period of each child.Results: The study included 828 patients. The median age at diagnosis was 47 years for parous women and 42 years for nonparouswomen (p < 0.001). The tumor size of the patients diagnosed within the breastfeeding period was significantly larger compared to theother patients. Estrogen and progesterone receptor positivity were lower in patients diagnosed during breastfeeding. Additionally, themean number of positive lymph nodes, dissected lymph nodes, and positive lymph node/dissected lymph node ratio in parous andbreastfed patients with a nonmetastatic disease were statistically significantly higher in multivariable analysis than those patients whowere nulliparous and have not breastfed.Conclusion: Breast cancer is seen at a later age in patients who are parous than those who have never given birth. Patients who areparous and have breastfed tend to present with a higher stage of the disease.

Dermatophytosis is a potentially zoonotic superficial skin infection caused by keratinophilic fungi. Identification ofdermatophytes aids in understanding the epidemiology of infections and finding out better treatment modalities. In the study, 12 (6 females, 6 males) healthy adult New Zealand rabbits were used to examine the morphometrical andstereological values. White matter, gray matter and total segment volume of the segments in the pars lumbalis were calculated byCavalieri’s principle. The findings were grouped according to sexand statistically evaluated. As a result, 38% of the length of the spinalcord in rabbits belonged to the pars lumbalis. The morphometric parameters were not statistically different between male and femalerabbits (p > 0.05). Plasmonic sensors, leveraging localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), have gained prominence for their sensitivity. This study explores a metamaterial-based sensor platform comprising nanospheres fabricated through colloidal lithography. In this study, the BMP15 and GDF9 gene regions were examined through DNA sequencing in some native sheep breeds of Türkiye (Kıvırcık, Karacabey Merino, Chios, Gökçeada, Çine Çaparı, Awassi, and Karakacan). In the BMP15 exon 2 region, two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified: one synonymous SNP, P248P (proline/proline), and one nonsynonymous SNP, L251P (leucine/proline), resulting in a missense mutation. In the GDF9 exon 1 region, only a nonsynonymous SNP, R87H (histidine/ arginine), was found. The objective of this study is to evaluate the clinical presentations and adverse outcomes of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and assess the impact of SSc features on the clinical course of COVID-19.Materials and methods: In this multicenter, retrospective study, SSc patients with COVID-19 were included. Clinical features of SSc, along with detailed COVID-19 data, were extracted from medical records and patient interviews.Results: The study included 112 patients (mean age 51.4 ± 12.8 years; 90.2% female). Data on the prevalence of allergic diseases in children with proven drug allergies are limited. We aim to evaluate thefrequency of allergic comorbidity in children with proven common drug allergies.Materials and methods: Children with drug hypersensitivity confirmed by diagnostic allergy tests at our center between January 2010and December 2020 were screened retrospectively. Patients with the most common drug allergies (due to antibiotics, nonsteroidalantiinflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], and antiepileptic drugs) were selected for analysis. Background/aim: Melanoma is one of the most aggressive cancers and treatment methods commonly used for patients with skin cancer include checkpoint and BRAF/MEK inhibitors, traditional chemotherapy drugs, radiation and adjuvant treatment methods. Due to the resistance and toxic effects that the patient develops against the drugs, an effective treatment method has not been developed for melanoma yet. Background/aim: This study aims to investigate the association between rs2267437, rs5751129 and rs132770 polymorphisms of the XRCC6 gene, which plays a role in repairing DNA double strand breaks, and the risk of Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC).Methods: The study included 150 patients who had been diagnosed with PTC and 204 healthy control subjects. Genotyping of SNPs was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism method (PCR - RFLP).Results: In rs2267437 polymorphism, individuals with GG genotype had lower risk of PTC than wild-type CC genotype (p=0.037, 95% CI=0.19-0.96, OR=0.67). We aimed to evaluate scar niches and compare the single and double-layer uterine closure after six months following CS.Materials-Methods: A prospective, randomized trial assessed 56 women undergoing single or double-layer uterine closure. None of the patients had previous uterine surgery. The CSs were elective cases. In this study, a new method for synthesizing diepoxides is proposed. Tetrahydroindene 1 was brominated with NBS in the presence of LiClO4 and acetic acid, resulting in the formation of dibromodiacetate derivatives 2 and 3. Treatment of compounds 2 and 3 with NaOH in methanol produced a mixture of diepoxides 4 and 5. Additionally, direct bromination of tetrahydro-1H-indene yielded tetrabromo octahydroindene isomers 6 and 7. The structures of the compounds were characterized using spectroscopic techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, APT, COSY, and XRD. Xanthones comprise a large family of heterocycles displaying fascinating biological properties. Many synthetic protocols have been developed for the preparation of natural and nonnatural xanthone derivatives. Among them, condensation reactions between salicylic acid derivatives and phenol partners are highly desirable. Those reactions can be satisfactorily performed using Eaton’s reagent (P2O5 in CH3SO3H). Despite being highly effective with a variety of substrates, this approach presents limitations that depend on the electronic nature of the reaction precursors. In this study, β-2-heteroaryl substituted (N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl, 2-thiophenyl, 2-furyl) α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with two α-diazo carbonyl compounds that had different characteristics (dimethyl diazo malonate and 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one) in the presence of both copper and rhodium catalysts. In the case of reactions with N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl α,β-unsaturated ketones, the major product was the insertion derivative. However, in the reactions of 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones with dimethyl diazomalonate (acceptor-acceptor disubstituted), only dihydrofuran products were formed over carbonyl ylides. When 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one (donor-acceptor disubstituted), 1-phenylpropane-1,2-dione was obtained under our reaction conditions.

In this study, silane and quaternary ammonium functional methacrylate monomers were synthesized and used to construct a copolymer using an emulsion polymerization technique to control the reaction rate. The copolymer was then designed using different ratios of silane and quaternary ammonium groups to investigate the relationship between the structure and properties. Veratrum spp. have traditionally been used in folk medicine to treat various pathologies. In this study, nine compounds, comprising one simple phenolic compound (1), three stilbenoids (2–4), and five flavonoids (5–9), were isolated from the aerial parts of Veratrum versicolor f. viride Nakai. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses and comparison with reported data. Together, all reported compounds were isolated from V. versicolor f. viride for the first time in the study.
