Nutrient Digestibility, Performance, And Egg Quality Traits Of Quails Raised In Different Stocking Densities And Ascorbic Acid Supplementation In A Hot, Tropical Environment, Adi Ratriyanto, Firmanda Firmanda, Heni Purwanti, Murjoko Murjoko

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study investigated the effects of stocking density (SD) and ascorbic acid (AA) supplementation on nutrient digestibility and laying performance of quails in a tropical environment. Four hundred and eight Japanese quails were designated in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with four replicates. The birds were distributed to three SDs, namely 40 (SD-1), 45 (SD-2), and 50 birds per m2 (SD-3) by allotting 15, 17, and 19 birds per cage, respectively (cage size: 3750 cm2). Each SD was supplemented with AA (0 and 250 mg/kg). Interaction was identified between SD and AA on egg production (P < 0.01), while the highest value was yielded in SD-2 supplemented with AA (83.6%). SD-3 achieved lower ether extract (EE) and crude fiber (CF) digestibility (P < 0.05) and eggshell thickness (P = 0.01) than SD-1 or SD-2. AA supplementation enhanced dry matter (DM), EE, CF, crude ash (CA), and calcium (Ca) digestibility (P < 0.05). AA improved egg weight, feed conversion, and protein and energy efficiency ratios as well as eggshell weight and thickness (P < 0.05). The SD of 45 birds per m2, combined with AA supplementation at 250 mg/kg, can be recommended for quails housed in hightemperature environments.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The study was conducted to determine growth, slaughter, and carcass characteristics of Lindovskaya geese. While a total of 237 goslings, 101 males, and 136 females were used to determine their growth characteristics, 16 male geese in total were used for the detection of the slaughter and carcass characteristics. Each slaughter group (12 weeks and 16 weeks old) consisted of 8 male geese. It was determined that the effect of sex on body weight values by week was significant (P < 0.05). In addition to this, the body weights of male geese were higher than the body weights of the female geese in all weeks. In the study, it was determined that the effect of the slaughter age on the weights of slaughter, head, blood, intestinal fat, and abdominal fat was significant (P < 0.05). Additionally, the values of the geese slaughtered at 16 weeks were higher compared to the geese slaughtered at 12 weeks. It was detected that the effect of slaughter age on the weight of the hot carcass, cold carcass, neck, breast and back, and other parts were significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, it was concluded that these values increased as the slaughter age increased. As a result, it can be said that slaughter age at 16 weeks was more preferable than at 12 weeks under breeder conditions. Additionally, it has been revealed that Lindovskaya geese need to be reared under controlled conditions, with regular care and feeding, to obtain better results.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of season and sex on the production efficiency of commercial turkey farms in the Aegean Region. The data of 1161 production periods (570 male and 591 female) on 139 turkey farms between 2008 and 2017 were analysed. Daily feed consumption, feed conservation ratio (FCR), average daily gain (ADG), performance index, and carcass weight (P < 0.001) were higher in males than females. While males and females had a similar mortality rate in the first week (P > 0.05), the mortality rate in the later stages was higher in males (P < 0.001). The mortality rate in the initial period was highest in production periods that began in winter and lowest in those that began in summer (P < 0.001). The total mortality rate was higher in the autumn group than in the spring and summer groups (P < 0.001). Rearing season × sex interaction had a significant influence on the performance characteristics investigated in the study, except for mortality rates and survival. In males, FCR was lower in the autumn and winter groups than that of the spring and summer groups (P < 0.05). The highest ADG values were observed in the summer group for males and in the winter group for females. The best performance index was in the summer group in males, and the lowest performance index was observed in the autumn group for both males and females. In conclusion, environmental arrangements are needed in order to reduce the mortality rate and improve performance in production periods that began in autumn and winter.

In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of lactation status, days in milk (DIM), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) dose, and repeated superstimulations on superovulation response and embryo yield in Simmental cattle. In the present study, 193 Simmental breed cattle (lactating, nonlactating, and heifer) were used as donors, of which 149 were superovulated only once and the other 44 were superovulated for 3 times. Progesterone-based estrus synchronization protocol was applied to the donors. Starting from day 7, FSH was given intramuscularly to donors in decreasing doses twice a day for 4 days. The donors were injected with …

A fracture that does not unite in nine months is defined as nonunion. Nonunion is common in fragmented fractures and large bone defects where vascularization is impaired. The distal third of the tibia, the scaphoid bone or the talus fractures are furthermore prone to nonunion. Open fractures and spinal fusion cases also need special monitoring for healing. Bone tissue regeneration can be attained by autografts, allografts, xenografts and synthetic materials, however their limited availability and the increased surgical time as well as the donor site morbidity of autograft use, and lower probability of success, increased costs and disease transmission and …

In this research, molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) for D-arabinitol were synthesized using a bulk polymerization method through a noncovalent approach. The MIPs were prepared by using D-arabinitol as a template, acrylamide as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylateas cross-linker, benzoyl peroxide as an initiator and dimethyl sulfoxideas a porogen. MIPS was synthesized in several formulas with a different molar ratio of template to functional monomers and cross-linker. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the MIPs produced. A batch rebinding assay was used to test the binding efficiency of each formula. Batch rebinding test …
