This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different feeding levels on ewe weight gain, deviation in weight gain, lamb birth weight and lamb growth performance of Karakas and Hamdani breeds. In this study, the qualitative and quantitative aspects of aerobic bacterial flora of the skin, gills, intestine, liver, kidney and spleen of rainbow trout in relation to pond water in two different fish farms were analysed. The bacterial load of pondwater in Seniçbey Farm was 10 2 -10 5 cfu/ml. It was determined that the total viable counts of aerobic microorganisms of pond water in this farm were higher than these in Aksu Farm (10 2 -10 4 cfu/ml). This research was carried out to determine the amount of concentrate and hay consumed during the milk feeding period and the weaning age of Brown Swiss and Holstein calves. Twenty-five Brown Swiss and twenty Holstein Friesian calves were used. Calves reached 500 g and 1000 g/daily calf starter feed consumption at 36.5 ± 1.8 and 53.8 ± 1.2 days-old respectively. Also, gains in live weight and daily feed consumption depending upon age were studied functionally. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of paratuberculosis in dairy cattle in ElazİÛ and the surrounding villages. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based on IS900, an insertion sequence specific to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, was used to detect mycobacterial DNA in milk samples of 500 dairy cows. The detection limit of the PCR was assessed by spiking a known negative milk sample with a dilution series (1x10 9 to 10 bacteria/ml) of reference M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis culture). The morphological and structural development of the syrinx was studied with a light microscope in 100 female and male Japanese quails from 1 to 60 days old and adults. The quails had a tracheobronchial syrinx since it was based on both tracheal and bronchial elements. Two tracheal syringeal cartilages were attached at both ends to the pessulus in the tympanum. In this species the tympanum had a slightly increased diameter. The pessulus was a wedge-shaped cartilage, its blade lying dorsoventrally so that it divided the airway vertically. The effects of vitamin C on progesterone and oestradiol 17b synthesis, and fertility rate were studied in Merino sheep. A total of 60 sheep, aged between 2 and 7 years, of which 30 had low, and the other 30 had high plasma vitamin C levels were used. Each low and high vitamin C group was divided into 2 subgroups. Each subgroup had equal numbers of sheep. Objective: Tissue engineering (TE) is an approach by which cells are grown in vitro onto biodegradable polymers to construct tissues for implantation. Preliminary experimental applications of cardiovascular surgery in our laboratory for creating vascular grafts and valve leaflets through TE are presented and discussed. Material and Methods: Ovine artery and vein segments were harvested, separated into individual cells, expanded in tissue culture and seeded onto synthetic biodegradable tubular scaffolds in 20-day old lambs . This prospective study was designed to investigate lymphocyte subsets in acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN). Peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled CD3, CD4, CD8, CD14, CD19, CD45, CD56, CD45RA and CDW29 monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry. Twenty patients aged 14-22 years who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for APSGN were evaluated during the 1st and 12th weeks of the of disease. Twenty-four age-matched healthy subjects served as controls. The role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the developing neocortex was reexamined by comparing its expression in rats, mice and guinea pigs, following the protocol for acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (described in Sendemir et al., 1996) in order to determine the suitability of the breeding colony at UludaÛ University for use as an animal model. In this research, the effects of early weaning on the growth rate and milk production characteristics of Brown Swiss cattle in later years were investigated. The calves used in the study were weaned at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age, and the weights obtained at 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months of age were not significantly affected by the age of weaning. The weight gains determined between 6 and 18 months of ages with 3-month intervals were also not significantly affected by the different ages of weaning. The co-localization of the distribution of the neurokinin 1 receptor with nitric oxide was investigated in laminae I-II, III- IV, X and in the intermediolateral horn of the spinal cord in thirteen adult rats. Silver-intensified gold and standard immunocytochemical labelling or standard double immunocytochemical labelling were employed in 40µm-thick sections of the spinal cord. There were many NK1 receptor-expressing neurones in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, but none of these expressed NOS. The aim of this study was to estimate the cost of mastitis and the contribution of each cost component of mastitis to the total mastitis induced cost in herds with low and high levels of subclinical mastitis under Scottish field conditions. It was estimated that mastitis cost £140 per cow/year to the average Scottish dairy farmer in 1996. However, this figure was as low as £69 per cow/year in herds with lower levels of subclinical mastitis, and as high as £228 cow/year in herds with high sub- clinical mastitis. Protein bands of hydatid fluids of sheep liver were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, and this was followed by the determination of specific bands of hydatid cysts for sheep and humans. For diagnostic purposes, 30 positive and 20 negative sheep sera, 1 commercially obtained non-infected sheep serum, and 10 posi- tive and 10 negative human sera were used in this experiment. Effects of immersion chilling on the microbiological quality of poultry carcasses and cross contamination of Salmonella were studied. Levels of aerobic mezophilic bacteria, coliform, Escherichia coli and the incidence of Salmonella were determined prechill and postchill. The level of coliform and E. coli were reduced by immersion chilling (P0.05) but there was an increase in Salmonella incidence in carcasses exiting the immersion chiller indicating that this may be the point of most significant cross contamination in broiler processing plants. In the first step, semen samples were diluted with Tris+Citric acid+Fructose+Egg yolk and Sadium citrate+Egg yolk diluents and were frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour. In the second step, 120 Merino ewes were synchronised with sponges, which contained flourogestone acetate, for 14 days. PMSG was injected into the ewes on the withdrawal day. In this study, the heart structures of 30 English racing horses with different weights were examined by M-mode echocardiography. Horses were separated into 3 groups of 10 horses. A feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of dietary astaxanthin concentration on muscle pigmentation of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) with a mean initial weight of 270 g fed diets supplemented with astaxanthin in diet concentrations of 60 (group II) and 90 mg/kg (group III) for 35 days. The rainbow trout has a great production capacity in Turkey. Marinated and breaded rainbow trout was prepared and the effect of the MAP technology on the shelf-life was studied. The samples were packaged and stored in 3 groups. These were the control (air), group A (5% O_2 + 35% CO_2 + 60% N_2 ), and group B (30% CO_2 + 70% N_2 ). Multiple regression analysis was utililised to estimate the relationship between somatic cell counts (SCC) and milk yield using the data of 1687 quarter milk samples collected weekly from 20 cows at the Dairy Unit of A.U. Veterinary Faculty's Research Farm between May and October 1998. The findings of this study supported the results of similar previous studies on that there is a negative relationship between SCC and milk yield, the relationship between milk yield and lnSCC (natural logarithmic form) is not linear.
