Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The performance of stand-up comedy is variously isolating, inviting, linear, and transactional. The stand-up comedian occupies the stage alone, appearing distinctly independent from the audience. Simultaneously, the audience offers their feedback consistently through the presence or absence of laughter. Audience responses to, and judgment of, the stand-up comedian’s performance forms the inexorable bond between these two parties. As such, this (inter)relationship between the comedian and audience is co-created, interdependent, and dynamic. Through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin, and a review of relevant narrative scholarship, this paper explores the use of narrative by comedian Louis C.K. as being a mode of …

This essay examines the use of 1980s romantic comedies, particularly the films of John Hughes, by the film, Easy A (Will Gluck, 2010). I use an intertextual approach to adaptation studies to link one of the film's source texts, Can't Buy Me Love (Steve Rush, 1987) to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850).

With the rise of the political correctness movement, the education system is split on how best to handle issues revolving around student speech.  Some institutions clamp down on students by creating safe spaces or instructing teachers and professors to avoid certain words; others continue to allow students to exercise their various forms of speech nearly unabridged.  Each institution has its own speech policy, and policies can vary from extremely limiting to a nearly free-range for ideas, speech, and expression.  While the Constitution allows for freedom of speech, the Supreme Court has found that in certain situations, that right may be …

This dissertation considers the rhetorical use of the term “spontaneity” and action affiliated with it from the perspective of ethnomethodology, as a dynamic social practice emergent from concrete interactions among people. I first consider a variety of existing operationalizations of “spontaneity” in academic research from the perspective of what is ethnomethodologically accomplished by these operationalizations, i.e., what questions do they answer or attempt to answer? I then turn to a detailed rhetorical analysis of the term “spontaneity” as an ideograph in improvisational theatre, a social practice in which enactment of spontaneity is treated as criterial to identity and recognition of …

Scholars have established that our geographic environments – including infrastructure for walking and food availability - contribute to the current obesity epidemic in the United States. However, the relationship between food, walkability, and obesity has largely only been investigated in large urban areas. Further, many studies have not taken an in-depth look at the spatial fabric of walkability, food, and obesity. Fear of crime is a major problem in today’s society. Much research has been devoted to neighborhood settings on the issue; however, little research has been conducted on college and university campuses. Fear of crime can result in devastating consequences on college students, as well as, campus faculty, administration, and the campus community. Before a solution can be put into effect a cause needs to be identified. Incivilities have led to fear in many settings and are believed to also cause fear on campuses.

Excuse Me Judge, Can You Spare A Little Speech? Freeing The Beggar’S Right To Solicit Donations From Content-Based Restrictions In The Traditional Public Forum, Aaron O’Brien

Panhandlers often receive citations for violating municipal ordinances prohibiting solicitation for immediate donations for items of value.  Anti-panhandling laws have a long history and are sometimes used to force the homeless to relocate to other towns.  Federal appellate courts are split on the question of whether ordinances prohibiting panhandling represent content-based or content-neutral restrictions of free speech in the public forum.  This Comment reviews the historical and legal background of such ordinances, and argues that panhandling is pure speech conveying a message of neediness, and that laws prohibiting solicitation for immediate donations for items of value represent content-based restrictions that …

There's Something Rotten In Film Criticism, And His Name Is, Regrettably, Not Johnny, Walter C. Metz

I argue for the development of a middle-ground film criticism, less jargon-filled than academic writing, yet one that uses historical and theoretical methods beyond those found in journalistic, mass media popular criticism. I develop a case study of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (2012), using Jean-Louis Comolli's essay, "A Body Too Much" to reveal the limitations of popular reviewers' reliance on a simplistic formulation of "good" acting.

Archivists And Thespians: A Case Study And Reflections On Context And Authenticity In A Digitization Project, Matthew J. Gorzalski

During a recent digitization project between archivists and theater faculty at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), different assumptions and perspectives revealed competing ideas about context and authenticity of primary sources. This article discusses these points of contention by framing them within similar concerns expressed in the archival and humanities literature. It then examines theater literature to understand performance studies research needs and to conceptualize notions of context and authenticity in theater scholarship. The article supports prior assertions that notions of context and authenticity are not absolute but are rooted in the perspectives of different disciplines. It also argues that when …

Utilizing performative writing to interrogate the experiences of a queer Xicano male in the discipline of Communication Studies, this essay argues for specificity in dialogue with specificity to disrupt dominant and/or normalized power relations in Queer of Color Critique (QOCC) and beyond. After defining QOCC, the potentiality of jotería critique is offered as a decolonial queer praxis that focuses on hybridity, radical interconnectedness, and nonheteronormative mestiza/o sexual and gender subjectivities. Further, by embracing the ambiguities of hybridity and the politics of radical interconnectedness, Jotería communication studies is a nascent sub-discipline that works in the borderlands between …

The following article contends with what began as a Master’s Thesis project and performance that used an experimental and bi-methodological approach of “critical oral history performance” and “performance as research” in order to produce and analyze the oral histories of two Latina women who migrated via México during pregnancy as “undocumented” subjects. This method was then again used for another oral history performance project that centered on the narrative of an undocumented queer (lesbian) woman from Guatemala.
