The purpose of this research paper is to present a selection of different compositions for the saxophone by a group of composers from different countries, musical backgrounds, and compositional styles. In addition, the author chose different compositions that reflect a timeline that begins with the early style compositions for the saxophone and progresses to more modern. These five works were performed at a graduate recital on February 26, 2022. This document contains biographical, historical, analytic information, and performance considerations to influence a better performance of any of these five pieces. The Full Monty: Analyzing The Constitutionality Of Ordinances That Only Punish Women For Being Topless In Public, Max Birmingham

Public female-only topless bans are constitutional, as most courts have upheld. This Article addresses two concerns surrounding the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment: First, whether an ordinance expressly punishing women—but not men—for being topless in public violates the Equal Protection Clause; and second, whether an ordinance targeting women and criminalizing exposure of “the female breast” is unconstitutional.

The Equal Protection Clause makes no distinction between classifications (sex, race, ancestry, alienage, inter alia) and other discriminatory practices. Nor does the text require equal treatment or equal rights. Rather, it requires equality only in the “protection of the laws.” Female …

The purpose of this research paper is to provide scholarly program notes to accompany the clarinet graduate recital of Gloria Ines Orozco Dorado. This paper consists of four chapters: Chapter 1. Fantasy Pieces by Robert Schumann (1849), Chapter 2. Rrowzer! by Eric Mandat (2005), Chapter 3. Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Francis Poulenc (1962), and Chapter 4. Zarabandeo by Arturo Marquez (1995). Each chapter will provide biographical background information about the composer, a musical and structural analysis of the piece, and a discussion of some of the technical and musical challenges presented for clarinetists in each piece.

This dissertation offers an outlined proposal and a model for practicing queer oral history—a nuancing of oral history praxis. Queer oral history is rooted in performance studies’ call to consider everyday texts alongside Dwight Conquergood’s (1985) articulations of ethical and dialogic performance of the other. I propose that queer oral history exists as an alternative praxis to traditional oral history; in order for this distinction to emerge, a practitioner must accept two charges. The first is a commitment to destabilizing oral history through the inclusion of other diverse methodological practices. Further, the researcher must welcome the ethical imperative to reflexively …

I reflect back on the ARTS Pre-Conference 2017 of the Canadian Society for Studies in Education. It was a day full of non-linear knowledge exchanges, conversations, creations, contemplation and arts-based activities. Collaborators dwelled in, engaged, and emerged together spiritually, poetically, and musically to rekindle their learning, coexistence and mystical understandings. The Baadasssss And The Avant-Garde: The Radical Aesthetics And Politics Of Melvin Van Peebles, Samuel Jay Smucker

Theses

Melvin Van Peebles is best known for Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) and that film’s role in inspiring the Blaxploitation cycle of films of the early 1970s. However, it was in France, where he had emigrated like other black creatives in the 1960s, that Van Peebles became a filmmaker. Drawing on biographical research and a close reading of his films, I connect Van Peebles to the institutions and aesthetics of the French New Wave. Van Peebles radicalizes New Wave techniques by employing them to illuminate issues of racism. I generate a new reading of Sweetback which connects the experimental aesthetics …

Contemporary arts-based inquiry invites us to linger in moments, to reflect upon our lives, our encounters, our relationships within the grander context of the worlds within which we dwell and those that we co-create. Here, we explore the landscape of the arts in relation to assessment and evaluation. Sharing research in performative modes opens new possibilities for meaning making. This article offers a monologue that explores my experience of working on a theatre project with military veterans. The impact of working on the creative process with veterans inspired this performed piece, and provided an opportunity to contemplate what it means to be a ‘man’ in today’s society. The article first situates performed research within current arts-based literature prior to sharing the creative piece, which is at the heart of this offering. In this answer to the special call, I layer accounts of my reaction to Bo Burnham’s stand-up comedy special Make Happy with discussions of the stigma surrounding mental health and personal narratives about my own difficulties with anxiety. Dutta argues that “narratives are sites of contestation where cultural meanings are played out through dialogues among cultural participants” (91). He goes on to add that the sharing of narratives reveals the cultural politics involved in models of health and allows for the exploration of new possibilities (Dutta 103).
