Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long

In this paper, I argue that critical intercultural communication, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of fat studies within its literature and analysis. Reciprocally, fat studies can also benefit from this relationship and the questions that would be raised for both fat studies and critical intercultural communication by such a juxtaposition of the areas of study. In particular, I employ my experiences as a fat, U.S. American woman to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of fat studies and identity research within critical intercultural communication. This document is a musical analysis of the show Curtains by John Kander and Fred Ebb with a look at each major song’s structure through the following criteria: form, melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, orchestration, texture, and challenges a music director faces with in regards to vocal coaching and conducting. This production was staged at SIUC in the fall of 2014, and because of the many formats that this book underwent it would have been helpful to have musical research in order to make the path more clear.

The Impact Of Eugène Ysaӱe On Performance Practice And Solo Violin Repertoire: A Graduate Recital Inspired By The Master Himself, Petra Bubanja

This paper will provide insight into the close connections of some of the early 20^th century’s true masters of violin and composition, specifically: Eugène Ysaӱe, César Franck, and Fritz Kreisler. Through anecdotes and analysis of four of their works I hope to show how collaboration and friendship between these masters lead to some of the last great examples of violinists composing for themselves (or others). By investigating what biracial identities are able to accomplish, and by looking at the effect of the political correctness generation we live in, this research report investigates what is funny, and where is the line.

Bakhtin’s perspective and concepts have generated great interest in American and Western European academic circles in recent years. This review describes Bakhtin’s concept of carnivalesque and how it has been utilized in organizational communication research. The synopsis of the carnival application in organizational communication scholarship shows, however, very limited usage of a Burkean approach to Bakhtinian theory. In this paper, I call for a more balanced application of Bakhtinian carnival concept in the organizational communication field by including both Goffman’s and Burke’s frameworks to analyze organizational communication.

In this essay, I make a bid for the incorporation of the Derridian supplement into aesthetic discourses as a means of understanding and evaluating live performance. I call this move “supplemental aesthetics,” which, in the end, expands the vocabulary of absence and presence. I contend that a method of supplemental aesthetics adapts Derridian vocabulary to account for the intertextual and multisensory experience of live performance, asking practitioners and scholars to account for both the present and absent aspects of staged production. Caught at a divide between fundamentalist Judeo-Christian rhetoric and secular queer discourse, queer Christians face difficult obstacles in enacting/ embodying their identity. Bohache (2003) claims that a queer Christology, or developing a queer view of Christianity, is a potentially beneficial way to reconcile this identity gap. To explore this claim, I demonstrate a need to also examine the way in which a queer Christian body enacts a queer and Christian identity by juxtaposing my own narrative as a queer Christian in a religious setting against queer theory. In this paper, I consider how the female body is disciplined utilizing Foucault’s notion of the panoptic gaze. I build upon his insights concerning societal surveillance by examining how the pregnant body is disciplined to fit into four general categories. I first review literature about pregnant women and find that most scholarship frames pregnant women in four ways: women are disciplined to be commodified, to be selfless, to protect the fetus, and to respond willingly to the medical gaze. In this autoethnographic essay, I revisit memories from past experiences with my father in order to find new meanings that may have escaped me in the moments when we were together. These moments are times when I avoided connection with my father or when connection somehow avoided me. In an attempt to rebuild our relationship and prepare myself to be a better parent, I reframe our stories and question my creation of a fathering identity that rejects the father-son relationship I experienced. Whether they are gracing movie screens, tweeting about the size of their baby bump, or being photographed by the paparazzi in their swimwear accidently on purpose, celebrities compel consumers to care. Despite the pervasive consumer interest in celebrities, the fundamental process of how and when consumers develop relationships with and attachments to them is a subject that has been underexplored by marketing scholars, a discipline whose activities are often turbocharged by celebrities. The purpose of this research paper is to present historical information and theoretical analysis of four selected compositions that feature the saxophone as soloist with either piano or electronic accompaniment. These four compositions were performed at a recital on February 18, 2014. The pieces performed were the first three movements of Suite No. 1 in G Major, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Concerto pour Saxophone Alto et Orchestra, written by Henri Tomasi, Mirage, penned by Dorothy Chang, and Buku, created by Jacob Ter Veldhuis.

Promotional Strategies Of Local Nonprofit Organizations, Katherine E. Foley

This study is about the promotional efforts of nonprofit agencies in the Southern Illinois region. Nonprofits have to cater to three target audiences which are clientele, donors and volunteers. An in depth interview was conducted with key personnel at six different rural non-profit organizations about their marketing strategies and how they allocate funding for promotion. Based on the results, most effective form of promotion proved to be grassroots efforts and the most popular source of capital came from government funding. This study concludes that agencies should use their promotional efforts to attract volunteers and donors. The study recommends that in …
